From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,
“Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.” (Luke 10:42) In today’s Gospel, we find what is probably a common situation in the lives of families. Mary is busy at home preparing for the visit of Jesus. She is cooking and cleaning knowing that there will be many guests who will come to hear Him. Martha, it seems, has neglected that aspect of hospitality and has chosen instead to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to His words. Mary is upset by this and probably feels angry that all the work is falling on her. So she goes to complain to Jesus expecting that He will side with her. Jesus surprises Mary and tells her that her sister, Martha, has chosen the better part. How many times have we experienced those moments of feeling like all the work falls on us and become resentful of those who seem to be able to “take it easy?” This can be a tricky and sticky situation. Hospitality is certainly part of the Christian ideal and necessary in a household. So maybe what Jesus is pointing out is that there are times we can be so concerned about making things “nice” for guests, that we really never leave the time to sit and enjoy their company. Maybe we, like Mary, can, at times, be so consumed with the externals of hospitality that it prevents us from entering into the most important part of having guests...the human interaction. While that is important with anyone who comes into our home, here Mary has Jesus as her guest. Martha knows that Jesus has not only the words of eternal life, but also the way of peace in this life. Martha wants to take in all that Jesus has to offer, and in doing so, seems to be negligent of her other duties. But think about it...if we spend so much time in the preparations that we can’t enjoy those who are with us, we have lost an important aspect of opening our homes and lives to others. Maybe we can be so concerned about “doing” with family and friends that even our relationship with God can be put on the back burner. Summertime is traditionally spent with family and friends. We travel and enjoy our time off and the beautiful weather. Do those celebration times become so important and time consuming that we forget to sit before the Lord in prayer and even put our obligation to attend Mass in a place of secondary importance? If so, then maybe we need to hear this Gospel as Jesus speaking to us. Our relationship with Jesus must take precedence. Maybe the Gospel reminds us that deepening our relationship with God and with each other is so important that activities that keep us from those relationships should be the first to be put on the back burner. Something to ponder. Last week I included a website that will locate a Catholic Church for you during your travels. So here it is again: www.masstimes.org. As people are away enjoying trips and time with family, I do ask that you consider “make up” collection envelopes for those weeks you may be away. This is an important way for keeping the parish financially stable. As always, thank you for your consideration on this matter. In Jesus, Fr. Bob

New Bereavement Group Seeks Volunteer Facilitators The Parish Social Ministry Office is looking for two volunteers who may feel God’s call to facilitate a Bereavement Group for the parish. Volunteers would be properly trained over a couple of weeks starting in September by Dr. Lou Sabatini. Those being trained would attend a one hour training session and then attend an hour actual bereavement session following the training. Once volunteers are trained, we will hold a bereavement session at St. Mary’s for those who suffer from loneliness and sadness after the loss of their lovedones. Our bereavement session (running eight weeks, one hour and fifteen minutes per week) could be on any day of the week that works for the facilitators. The facilitators could share the responsibility of the sessions so the time commitment could be a little less. The volunteers do not necessarily have to be people who have suffered the loss of someone close to them, but do have to be individuals who would be able to empathize with those who have. If anyone is interested in volunteering to facilitate this very important session allowing us to build this critical ministry, especially post-COVID, please reach out to Kathleen Kosciusko at kkosciusko@stmary.ws or at 516-365-2705.
Parish Social Ministry Reaches Out to the Elderly and Homebound The Elderly and Homebound Ministry provides a social connection between the parish and the one in need. Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Prayer to the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus Heart of Jesus in the Eucharist, I adore You. Sweet Companion of our exile, I seek You. Holy God become man, I beat with Your Heart.
Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction Mondays
3:00 - 5:00 PM
Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, Whose Blood is the life of my soul, may it no longer be I who live, and pure love. I no longer want to deny Your expectations. Take me. I give myself to You. I entrust to You all my actions and thoughts -- my mind, that You may enlighten it, my heart, that You may fill it, my will, that You may establish it, my soul and body, that You may feed and sustain them. Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, Whose Blood is the life of my soul, may it no longer be I who live, but You alone Who lives in me.
Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, solitary, abandoned, humiliated, cursed, despised, outraged, ignored by men, have mercy on us. Lover of our hearts, pleading for Your beloved, patiently waiting for us, eager to hear our confidences, desirous of our devotion, have mercy on us. Heart of grace, silent and wishing to speak, Refuge of the hidden life, Sharer of the secrets of union with God, Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.
Jesus, Victim, I want to comfort You. I unite myself with You. I offer myself in union with You. I count myself as nothing before You. I desire to forget myself and think only of You, to be forgotten and rejected for love of You, not to be understood, not to be loved, except by You. I will hold my peace that I may listen to You. I will forsake myself in order to be lost in You. Grant that I may quench Your thirst for my salvation, Your burning thirst for my sanctification, and that, being purged, I may give You a true and pure love. I no longer want to deny Your expectations. Take me. I give myself to You. I entrust to You all my actions and thoughts -- my mind, that You may enlighten it, my heart, that You may fill it, my will, that You may establish it, my soul and body, that You may feed and sustain them.

Religious Education Registration Is Now Open for St. Mary Religious Education Program (2022-2023) Dear Families, It is so wonderful to invite you to now register your children for the St. Mary Religious Education Program (2022-2023). We are resuming in person catechesis as well as continuing to offer the optional model of online lessons. To enroll, visit the Religious Education page on the St. Mary parish website. Frequently, they will talk about a teacher who taught them something that made an impact on how they see the world. In sharing Christ’s Gospel to our young Catholics – this can be you! We are in need of Catechists and program volunteers with a devoted knowledge of Scripture and doctrinal teachings of the Catholic Church. Please do consider serving the parish as a Catechist, assistant or hall/traffic monitor. To join our growing school, please contact the Religious Education Office at 516-627-4028 ext. 1127. Society of St. Vincent de Paul In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus affirms that to be a disciple we must also sit at his feet and listen to him. St. Vincent de Paul taught that it is only in prayer that we can give selfless loving service to those who are poor. This week, please say a special prayer each day for the poor and forgotten in our parish. Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support. World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly Next Sunday, July 24th Theme: “In old age they will still bear fruit.” (Psalm 92:15) Pope Francis established the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly in 2021. It is to be celebrated each year on the fourth Sunday of July, to coincide with the feast of Sts. Joachim and Anne, parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Their feastday is July 26th. With this special day, he wishes to emphasize the pastoral care of the elderly as a priority. Not only are grandchildren and young people called upon to be present in the lives of older people, but older people and grandparents also have a mission of evangelization, proclamation, prayer, and encouraging young people in their faith. The Pope is dedicating this year’s celebration to the importance of inviting older people to contribute to building a better world. He has chosen “They shall bear fruit even in old age” from the Book of Psalms (92:15) as its theme. The theme is intended to emphasize how grandparents and the elderly are a value and a gift both for society and for ecclesial communities. On February 15th, the pope tweeted that elderly “should be cared for like a treasure of humanity: they are our wisdom, our memory. It is crucial that grandchildren remain close to their grandparents who are like roots from which they draw the sap of human and spiritual values.”
