From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,
“Lord, teach us to pray.” (Luke 11:1) In the Gospel today, the Disciples reveal a desire to know how to approach God. They want to know how to speak to God. They understand that prayer presents that venue to hear the voice of God. In His own prayer life, Jesus has reached that union with the Father and He teaches them. Jesus gives them that great prayer which Christians have prayed throughout the centuries. The Lord’s Prayer is one of the first things Christian parents teach their children. It is words passed down from generation to generation and define us as believers in Jesus. I dare say that each of us wants to know how to pray. We desire that openness to God so that we may hear His voice in our lives. There is something inside of us that longs for the presence of God. Yet it can seem to elude many of us. We attempt to pray and might get frustrated if it doesn’t develop as we hoped or desired. To be fruitful at prayer, we have to have a willingness to enter the discipline that prayer requires. That discipline is a willingness to work at it. The work of prayer is to stay faithful even if it seems “nothing” is happening. God desires to be part of the deepest and most intimate part of our lives, and yet we can have such difficulty attaining that. So we look to the Scriptures to see what God has to say to us. In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus gives us a very concise and succinct way to approach the Father. If we go through each line, we realize that this prayer contains all we need. What might be a helpful aid to prayer is to then take each line and ponder the meaning presented for our own lives. In those moments of silence, ask Jesus what it means for the direction of our lives. Meditating and praying these words can take a lifetime to develop and understand, BUT that is the work of developing a true prayer life. We see in the Gospel that Jesus calls us to ask God for all we need. God the Father is presented as One who truly cares for us. What is also important to notice is that we are told to be persistent in prayer. Even if we feel our prayers are not answered, we are asked to continue to flood heaven with our needs. Persistence and faithfulness are the keys to a true prayer life. Never lose hope. We are loved by Jesus and He will never abandon us! So take these words each day and don’t just say them, pray them. Take the Lord’s Prayer line by line so that we are not only opening ourselves to God as we present our needs to Him, but maybe, more importantly, we are open to God so that we may hear what He wants from us. The work of prayer can be challenging at times but its fruits cannot be measured. May your summer be a time of rest and relaxation so that you may enjoy the gifts that God gives you. As I have said, do not forget the obligation to attend Mass, yes, even while on vacation. What a great teaching moment it can be, especially if you have children, to spend the time looking for and putting in your schedule that Sunday time for the Lord. Here again is the website to find a church when you are traveling: www.masstimes.org. For those of you who do not have access to the internet, you can also call 1-800-Mass Times (1-800-627-7846). Also, if you have missed a stewardship offering for the parish, it is a great help to us financially if they can be made up. Thank you always for your generousity! In Jesus, Fr. Bob

New Bereavement Group Seeks Volunteer Facilitators The Parish Social Ministry Office is looking for two volunteers who may feel God’s call to facilitate a Bereavement Group for the parish. Volunteers would be properly trained over a couple of weeks starting in September by Dr. Lou Sabatini. Those being trained would attend a one hour training session and then attend an hour actual bereavement session following the training. Once volunteers are trained, we will hold a bereavement session at St. Mary’s for those who suffer from loneliness and sadness after the loss of their lovedones. Our bereavement session (running eight weeks, one hour and fifteen minutes per week) could be on any day of the week that works for the facilitators. The facilitators could share the responsibility of the sessions so the time commitment could be a little less. The volunteers do not necessarily have to be people who have suffered the loss of someone close to them, but do have to be individuals who would be able to empathize with those who have. If anyone is interested in volunteering to facilitate this very important session allowing us to build this critical ministry, especially post-COVID, please reach out to Kathleen Kosciusko at kkosciusko@stmary.ws or at 516-365-2705.
Parish Social Ministry Reaches Out to the Elderly and Homebound The Elderly and Homebound Ministry provides a social connection between the parish and the one in need. Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Holy Gospel according to John 6:53-58
Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction Mondays
3:00 - 5:00 PM
Jesus said to the Jews: “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever.” The Gospel of the Lord.
Reminder Regarding Scams A reminder to our parishioners, school families, and friends to remain cautious of phishing messages requesting urgent assistance, gift cards, or donations from St. Mary’s. If you receive a suspicious email, text, or call from someone acting as a Fr. Bob, Fr. Dominik, or a member of our staff, please do not respond, click, or provide any sensitive information such as your social security number or credit card. Delete the message immediately, block the caller’s number or email address. Cybercriminals use multiple tactics to lure a response – often through fake email accounts that look similar to addresses we use here at St. Mary’s Parish and Schools. Often, you are able to mouse over or click on the sender to show details such as the name and complete email address. We encourage you to read more about “phishing” and how you can protect your personal information without being tricked into giving money. You can contact the Parish Office at 516-627-0385 or email information@stmary.ws to verify if a message you received is legitimate.
St. Raphael Church in East Meadow will be offering a Bereavement Group for those who have lost a loved one through suicide starting in September. Religious Education Registration Is Now Open for St. Mary Religious Education Program (2022-2023) Dear Families, It is so wonderful to invite you to now register your children for the St. Mary Religious Education Program (2022-2023). We are resuming in person catechesis as well as continuing to offer the optional model of online lessons. To enroll, visit the Religious Education page on the St. Mary parish website. Frequently, they will talk about a teacher who taught them something that made an impact on how they see the world. In sharing Christ’s Gospel to our young Catholics – this can be you! Society of St. Vincent de Paul In the Gospel, Jesus teaches us that God is our “Father” and just as a parent’s love for their children is unlimited, so is God’s love and care for us unlimited. Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@ stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.

Tuesday, July 26th - Feast of Saints Anne and Joachim Saints Anne and Joachim are traditionally known as the parents of the Virgin Mary, as mentioned in some apocryphal writings. St. Anne is a patron saint of Canada, and of Brittany, France; and also of women in labor. As the grandparents of Jesus, Saints Anne and Joachim are also considered the patron saints of grandparents. Saints Anne and Joachim, thank you for your example of faith. Thank you for your wonderful daughter, our spiritual mother, Mary. Thank you for the love of God and the faith you inspire in us. Grandparents of Jesus, pray for us. Amen.
