A Reflection by Father Charles VANITY OF VANITIES, ALL IS VANITY (Ecclesiastes 1:2) The third stanza of the hymn, “I Come To You Once More, My God,” written by English Roman Catholic Priest, Frederick W. Faber (1814-1863), reads, “RICHES COULD BRING ME JOY AND POWER, AND THEY WERE FAIR TO SEE YET GOLD WAS BUT A SORRY GOD TO SERVE INSTEAD OF THEE.” The First Reading for the 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C, is from Qoholeth (Ecclesiastes) 1:2;2:18-23. The book is in dialogue with other Wisdom Books in the Hebrew Old Testament, namely Proverbs and Job. The Book of Proverbs is portraying wisdom and the theme is: “The young man who listens to the counsel of his father and follows the Torah, prospers.” This is opposed by the Book of Job which questions why a good man like Job, who follows all the commandments of God, suffers. Qoholeth, the third book in this philosophical triangle, has this to say: “Whether one is wise or foolish, rich or poor, good or bad, we all must die and leave our wealth to others” and he calls it VANITY. (Eccl. 2:15-16). However, Psalm 49 resolves the problem of Qoholeth by saying that although the wise and the fool suffer the same fate, the Psalmist brings in a third element - the upright, the righteous remain, because they will inherit what only God can give, the Gift of Life. This introduces us to the Gospel Reading from Luke 12:13-21 known as the “Parable of the Rich Fool.” The passage begins with a spontaneous request from someone in the crowd that Jesus should tell his brother to divide the inheritance with him. The question is weird because the answer is provided already in Deuteronomy 21:17. The request is, “Tell my brother to divide WITH ME” the inheritance. Now the question is, who is the person making the request. The younger son who is claiming equal rights with his elder brother? Jesus’ response is equally interesting. His response, “Who made me judge and arbiter over you?” is almost an exact paraphrase of what the two Hebrews who were quarreling told Moses in Exodus 2:14 when he tried to settle a dispute between them. What is the meaning of Jesus’ response then? It is a direct allusion to the figure of Moses. Moses had already given the law of inheritance in Deuteronomy 21:17. Why do they need another judge and arbiter? Why can’t the person making the complaint simply accept what Moses had prescribed? Is it a matter of greed? The parable which follows is that of the Rich Fool. What is at stake here is the issue revolving around Luke 12:19: “And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry.” The word rest used here is the same word used in the Ten Commandments for the Sabbath rest, as found in the Septuagint. What it means is that the rich man here has declared for himself a Sabbath. And what does he intend doing on his self-declared Sabbath? Not worship God, but eat, drink and make merry. But rest has a firm theological tradition in Israel. Israel rests for two reasons: (1) In Exodus 20:8-11, it is because God rested on the seventh day. (2) In Deuteronomy 5:12-15, it is because God freed Israel out of slavery. The rich man in the parable will rest when he has amassed enough. For as long as he has not amassed enough, he must keep working. The implications are twofold. First, for the rich man, there is no consideration of a Sabbath, of worship of God as long as he has not yet amassed all he wants. The second is that he will not permit his workers to rest until he achieves his goal. This is the perfect example of the man who has neither regard for God or his fellow man. The consequences of his actions are described in both vv.20 and 21. In v.20, his fellow human beings will consider him foolish, because he will surely leave all that he acquired behind, when he dies. But not only that. His servants are not likely to have very fond memories of him either, if he enslaved them, denying them their right to rest. But the bigger loss is in v.21. He will die and appear before God a pauper because he never made time for God. He never had riches with God. The danger our text warns about is that the rich man will potentially die a very poor man. What good are his possessions now? The moral of Jesus’ story is, “This is how it will be for everyone who stores up treasures for himself or herself but is not rich in what matters to God.” God Bless, Fr. Charles The Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time | July 31, 2022

New Bereavement Group Seeks Volunteer Facilitators The Parish Social Ministry Office is looking for two volunteers who may feel God’s call to facilitate a Bereavement Group for the parish. Volunteers would be properly trained over a couple of weeks starting in September by Dr. Lou Sabatini. Those being trained would attend a one hour training session and then attend an hour actual bereavement session following the training. Once volunteers are trained, we will hold a bereavement session at St. Mary’s for those who suffer from loneliness and sadness after the loss of their lovedones. Our bereavement session (running eight weeks, one hour and fifteen minutes per week) could be on any day of the week that works for the facilitators. The facilitators could share the responsibility of the sessions so the time commitment could be a little less. The volunteers do not necessarily have to be people who have suffered the loss of someone close to them, but do have to be individuals who would be able to empathize with those who have. If anyone is interested in volunteering to facilitate this very important session allowing us to build this critical ministry, especially post-COVID, please reach out to Kathleen Kosciusko at kkosciusko@stmary.ws or at 516-365-2705.

Parish Social Ministry Reaches Out to the Elderly and Homebound The Elderly and Homebound Ministry provides a social connection between the parish and the one in need. If you are interested in being contacted by our volunteers, please call the Parish Social Ministry office at 516-365-2705. The Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time | July 31, 2022

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Prayer of St. Thomas Aquinas

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction Mondays

3:00 - 5:00 PM

Lord, Father all-powerful and ever-living God, I thank You, for even though I am a sinner, your unprofitable servant, not because of my worth but in the kindness of your mercy, You have fed me with the Precious Body & Blood of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. I pray that this Holy Communion may not bring me condemnation and punishment but forgiveness and salvation. May it be a helmet of faith and a shield of good will. May it purify me from evil ways and put an end to my evil passions. May it bring me charity and patience, humility and obedience, and growth in the power to do good. May it be my strong defense against all my enemies, visible and invisible, and the perfect calming of all my evil impulses, bodily and spiritual. May it unite me more closely to you, the One true God, and lead me safely through death to everlasting happiness with You. And I pray that You will lead me, a sinner, to the banquet where you, with Your Son and holy Spirit, are true and perfect light, total fulfillment, everlasting joy, gladness without end, and perfect happiness to your saints. grant this through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul In the Gospel, Jesus tells the parable about the rich man who selfishly stored all his grain and goods only to die and not enjoy his abundance anyway. What we struggle all our lives to learn is that life does not consist of possessions nor our perceived security, but of being possessed by God. This week, as you give your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul you are realizing that in giving you indeed receive. Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.
