From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

“This is My Chosen Son; listen to Him.” (Luke 9:35) Here on the mountain of the Transfiguration, we hear echoes of the words from the Baptism of Jesus, “This is my Beloved Son,” as Jesus is “changed.” Moses and Elijah appear in glory to show that Jesus is the fulfillment of the promises of old. He has come as the Father’s Word and, because of this, He takes on the mantle of all the Father promises. It becomes clear that Jesus is the One sent from the Father, who speaks the Father’s will. If Jesus speaks the will of the Father, then we know that we are bound to not just hear His words, but to take them to ourselves. Lent is the journey that invites us to come to know Jesus. It becomes “our” journey to the mountaintop. Encountering the face and presence of Jesus will certainly mean change, of course, but the change is given that we may come to know Jesus more deeply and to embrace His call for our lives. This journey will mean leaving behind some pre-conceived notions or understandings of who Jesus is. This, of course, is difficult and may, at times, be our biggest challenge. We are comfortable with what we know and what we may have been taught as children. While many of those ideas might be helpful, they also may be the unconscious walls that keep us from truly knowing Jesus. Like St. Peter, who wanted to build permanent altars on the mountain – to remain on that mountain to experience the expression of Jesus that is revealed – Jesus reminds Peter and us that he must be willing to travel to places that leave behind the comfortable expressions in order to seek out the truth of Jesus. Change is never easy, as we know, but necessary for a life that we want to be rooted in Jesus. As St. Paul says, “Remain faithful to the Lord.” So read the Scriptures and do not be afraid if you encounter another image or understanding of Jesus. Who knows? He may have something wonderful in store for you! A reminder that some wonderful ways to consider for celebrating Lent are attending daily Mass, Stations of the Cross, confession and acts of charity. Don’t let the time go by without deepening your relationship with Jesus. What a great gift for Him and each of us we can present at Easter. This past Sunday we sent our parishioners seeking Baptism at Easter to the Bishop for the Rite of Election. This is the formal acceptance of those wishing to be baptized and received into the Church at the Easter Vigil. Our R.C.I. A. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) team has been working with them in teaching and faith formation so they may become members of the Catholic Community. On certain Sundays, they will attend the 10:30 AM Mass and engage in what are called the Scrutinies. These are moments of prayer and blessing that prepare the Candidates for the Easter Sacraments. I ask that you keep them in your prayers and may their dedication renew our own commitment to the Faith. I would like to thank Sr. Teresa, Fr. Collins, and the entire R.C.I.A. team for their hard work and dedication. In these difficult and trying times, Pope Francis has reminded us to continue our prayers for peace in the world, especially in Ukraine. As you know, last weekend a collection was taken up for humanitarian relief for the hurting people of Ukraine. You may still contribute by dropping off an envelope at the parish office or in the collection. Please indicate the word “Ukraine” on the envelope so we know what the donation is for. Stations of the Cross are prayed each Friday at 7:00 PM in the Church. In Jesus, our Crucified Lord, Fr. Bob

Readings and Questions for Faith Sharing on the Third Sunday of Lent

A Lenten Prayer Group, led by Sr. Teresa, meets on Wednesdays, from 7:30 to 8:30 PM, in the Marian Room.

Reading I: Exodus 3:1-8a, 13-15 “This is what you shall tell the Israelites: I AM sent me to you.”

The Rosary Society annual Day of Recollection is scheduled for Wednesday, March 23rd. Father Dominik Wegiel will be the guest presenter. FAST AND ABSTINENCE - Those who have reached their fourteenth year are bound to abstain entirely from meat on all the Fridays of Lent. All Catholics between the ages of eighteen and fifty-nine are also bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This means to limit oneself to a single full meal and avoid food between meals. Two other light meals, which together do not equal a full meal, may be taken during the day.

Reading II: 1 Corinthians 10:1-6, 10-12 Whoever thinks he is standing secure should take care not to fall. Gospel: Luke 13:1-9 “But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did!” Question for Adults: How am I being called to repentance this Lent?

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament A Lenten Prayer Dear Lord Jesus, by Your Passion and Resurrection You brought life to the world. But the glory of the Resurrection came only after the sufferings of the Passion. You laid down Your life willingly and gave up everything for us. Your body was broken and fastened to a Cross, Your clothing became the prize of soldiers, your blood ebbed slowly but surely away, and Your Mother was entrusted to the beloved disciple.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction Mondays 3:00 - 5:00 PM in the Church

Stretched out on the Cross, deprived of all earthly possessions and human aid, You cried out to Your Father that the end had come. You had accomplished the work given You, and You committed into His hands, as a perfect gift, the little life that remained to You. Lord, teach me to accept all afflictions after the example You have given. Let me place my death in Yours and my weakness in Your abandonment, Take hold of me with Your love, that same foolish love that knew no limits, and let me offer myself to the Father with You so that I may rise with You to eternal life. Amen.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul Lent is a call not just to “give up something” but more important to “give something for the poor.” Wherever you live in the parish, there are poor families within walking distance of your home. When in need, they ring the rectory bell. They are, in effect, ringing your doorbell. If you or someone you know needs assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385 ext. 1125 or SVDP@stmary.ws. If you would like to make a donation, you may use the collection slots at the doors of the church or place an envelope in the regular collection marked “St. Vincent de Paul Society.” For furniture and household donations, please call 516-746-8250 to arrange for a pick up.

A Lenten Reflection by Father Collins BEFORE YOU GIVE-FOR GOD, FOR-GIVE Undoubtedly, prayer is believed to be the most important thing in our Christian life. It is through prayer that we establish a relationship with God and with his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. The importance of prayer is further underscored by the fact that even “when we do not know how to pray as we ought, the Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words” (cf. Romans 8: 26). As a necessary part of our Lenten discipline, we are encouraged to intensify our prayer life. Therefore, it is important to understand the relationship between prayer and forgiveness. The first text of Scripture to analyze here is Mark 11:25: “Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.” In simple terms, this text tells us to forgive wrongs before you pray. To go back to our play upon the word FORGIVE, we can say: to be GIVEN what you ask FOR, you first must FOR-GIVE. Of all the petitions in the Lord’s Prayer, the only one that seems to have a condition attached to it is: “…and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us” (Matthew 6: 12). Jesus again picked that line alone and reiterated it in verse 14: “For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses” (Matthew 6: 1415). As Scott Hahn puts it: “We forgive as we have been forgiven. We forgive as God forgives. Only then should we ask God to forgive us as we forgive others.” (Scott Hahn: Understanding “Our Father,” p. 52). It stands to reason then that the more we pray the Lord’s Prayer, the more we should forgive; and the more we forgive, the more meaningful, powerful, and acceptable will our prayer be also. The last Scripture reference to make is Matthew 5:23-24: “So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift.” Again, this text can be simply restated as before you GIVE-FOR God, you must FOR-GIVE your brother or sister who has offended you. Our community of faith expresses our love for God and our need of his gift of salvation in the most sublime and supreme way through the offering left to us by Christ which is the Mass. The Mass is our highest form of prayer offering to God. Therefore, given reconciliation with brother or sister as a pre-condition for prayer offering means that forgiving offenses is essential to making our offering acceptable to God. This explains why in the offering of the Mass the Lord’s Prayer and the Sign of Peace are put in close relation to that high point of the Mass when we receive the gift of Christ himself in the Holy Communion. The Church is literally bidding each one of us to express in word and deed that we FOR-GIVE and reconcile with our brothers and sisters as we get ready to receive Christ our Lord who GIVES himself FOR us in the Holy Eucharist. Understand and appreciate here, then, the significance of the penitential rite at the beginning of Mass. Clearly, the expression of our prayer and its acceptance before God are inextricably linked with the forgiveness of our brothers and sisters. So, before you GIVE an offering of Prayer FOR God, FOR-GIVE a brother or sister who has offended you. Fr. Collins

A Reflection on the Pilgrimage to Italy by Fr. Dominik At the end of February, Fr. Bob was gracious enough to allow me to join St. Mary’s High School pilgrimage to Italy as their chaplain. We traveled to Venice, Florence, Padua, Assisi, Sorrento and Rome. In the beginning of the pilgrimage, we started in Venice right in the midst of the Carnival. The Carnival is always the week prior to Ash Wednesday and they have this tradition in Venice of people dressing up in Renaissance fashions and wearing masks. We also visited St. Mark’s Square and its Cathedral. We were exposed both to local and Catholic culture surrounding Italy. During the trip, we were also able to make visits to Padua and Assisi. We prayed before the relics of Ss. Anthony, Francis and Claire. To visit the actual burial sites of the saints helped us to visualize the reality of their lives. It is easy to reduce the saints to a collection of stories. But when we visited and saw their bones it pointed to their historical reality. They’re not mythical heroes, but real people who lived, worked, ate, laughed, and breathed as we do. In the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, there are giant frescos depicting the life of St. Francis. These helped us to see the magnitude of Francis’ life, the impact he made on the people of his day, and how he helped to inspire others to follow the call of Jesus. I had the privilege of celebrating Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica. It was powerful knowing that popes and saints are buried in this sacred place. It made me ponder on the mystery of the Church and how the Eucharist is what unites us with them. The Eucharist brings us into communion with them and with Jesus Christ. To think of all the history behind those altars and of all the saints who walked the same steps filled me with wonder. I remember sitting in the Sistine Chapel not even knowing where to look because my eyes were saturated with beauty. I looked at the drama of salvation painted on those walls and couldn’t help but sense the cosmic wonder that man belongs to such a mystery of life and God. Many people have asked me what was my favorite memory about the trip. One moment I won’t forget is when we first walked into the main square of Florence and saw the marble Cathedral of Florence called Saint Mary of the Flower. It’s a giant gothic Cathedral with an exterior made of marble. When the students first walked into the square and laid their eyes on it, I could hear the gasps of awe as they looked upon this magnificent and sacred architecture. The next day, we climbed over 400 steps into the top of the dome and we were able to see the whole city of Florence and the Apennine Mountains. Those were the moments that made the trip special. It was seeing the students encounter a world so ancient and so different from our own. The pilgrimage to Italy was an amazing experience which helped our students encounter our Catholic history, beauty and faith. Our pilgrimage was filled with Christian joy which created memories we will never forget.

The Schools of Saint Mary Lady Gaels Win Catholic League Championship After an incredible undefeated regular season, the top-seeded St. Mary’s High School Girl’s Basketball earned their well-deserved place in the NSCHSGAA Championship Game. On Thursday, March 3, 2022, the team laced up their sneakers to take on Sacred Heart Academy in the Mack Sports Complex at Hofstra University. With the ability for spectators to be present, our Lady Gaels had a terrific showing of support to represent our school proudly. Under the leadership of Coach Kevin White and Assistant Coach Michael Ryan, the team took to the court and resumed their remarkably consistent play. They gave 100% non-stop throughout the game and defeated SHA 50-35. The Lady Gaels achieved what they set out to do all season and celebrated their victory with great joy. This win is the team’s second title in three seasons for St. Mary’s. The game MVP was awarded to Alisa Blalock ’22, and Taryn Barbot ’23 received the League’s most outstanding player for the season. Tara Murray ’23 hit three big three-pointers, and Cayla Williams ’23 played a great game. Way to go, Gaels!

Religious Education Dear St. Mary Families, We walk into the season of Lent together in search of peace and answers to relentless prayer. Images of the suffering people of the Ukraine leave broken hearts behind. But for the Christian, we know that God is ever present in the midst of all of it. Not one soul suffers apart from his love. Indeed, we pray for the grace of faith and trust in God more than ever before. God knows especially now, that the human capacity to hear his voice is increasingly diminished in the face of tribulation. We are certainly in the desert here with Christ, facing many temptations of faith that aim to draw us away. But they will fail because we are not alone in the battle – we are with Christ invading that desert of despair, knowing that in the end – truth, goodness and beauty wins. And so, we pray for the hand of eternity to breathe sanctification into every life that has been taken. Proverbs tells us that God abhors hands that shed innocent blood and a heart that devises wicked plans. May his almighty hand bring an end to the suffering of both Ukraine and Russian mothers weeping for their children. If there has ever been a time for a spiritual retreat – it is now. Thank you to the Catechists who have volunteered to support the Confirmandi retreat. The Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal are SO excited at the opportunity to share Christ’s message with our students. We have a beautiful day of spiritual reflection and prayer planned. A reminder that reconciliation services for Grade 8 will also take place this month. Given the large number, a certain number of students will be assigned to the service on March 17th and another on March 31st. Grade 2 First Communicants will also receive First Reconciliation on March 23rd and 24th. Reminders will also be issued to families this week. It is hard to believe that we are just 8-10 weeks away from the completion of the 2021/2022 year. Spring begins March 20th. How lovely to see my orchid flowers bloomed. Wishing you a blessed Lenten season, Mrs. Granieri

RCIA and Adult Faith Formation RCIA Group Immerses Themselves in Lent The RCIA group are immersing themselves in the spirit of Lent as they enter the final preparation for their Easter Sacraments. They will study the Creed and the Lord’s Prayer, make the Stations of the Cross together and learn the great significance of Holy Week. Do keep them in your prayers.

Lenten Prayer Group It is not too late to join the Lenten Prayer Group that is meeting on Wednesdays at 7:30PM in the Marian Room. All are welcome to take advantage of this opportunity to pray with a group. Remember the words of Jesus, “Wherever two or three are gathered my MY Name, there am I in the midst of them.” Sister Teresa can be contacted about our RCIA and other Adult Faith Formation programs at 516-627-0385, ext. 1010. Rosary Society Our Mission Statement: The Rosary Society fosters devotion to Mary through prayer and good works for causes that would be dear to her heart Invest 20 minutes of your day to pray the Rosary, and see the difference it will make in your life. If you would like the Rosarians to pray for a special intention, please e-mail us at rosarysociety@stmary.ws.

PRAYING THE ROSARY DURING LENT Pray a decade of the rosary for the intentions of your prayer life during Lent. Then, spend a few moments determining what you will do—something reasonable, like a daily rosary, short prayer aspirations throughout the day, a daily visit to Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament (which does not have to be exposed for you to be in His presence and adore), or praying some parts of the Liturgy of the Hours. - Father Hugh Barbour, O. Praem., catholic.com

Lenten Day of Recollection Wednesday, March 23rd Our Lady of Grace Spiritual Center Registration will begin at 10:00 AM Please join us as we pray Our Lady’s Rosary, celebrate Mass and listen to a presentation by Father Dominik. Retrouvaille Weekend

Worldwide Marriage Encounter

You Can Help Heal Your Marriage

Worldwide Marriage Encounter announces an in-person experience in New England. This non-residential weekend takes place at St. Gabriel The Archangel Church 151 Mendon St., Upton, MA from Friday, March 18 - Sunday, March 20, 2022. Couples can drive to the experience from their homes or stay at one of several hotels in the area. Worldwide Marriage Encounter is designed to deepen and enrich the joys a couple shares together whether they’ve been married only a short time or many years. This inperson experience will be conducted in accordance with CDC safety protocols including social distancing. To apply contact Joe & Ginny Vatalle at 800-710-9963 or visit wwmema.org.

Do you feel alone? Are you frustrated or angry with each other? Do you argue or have you just stopped talking to each other? Does talking about it only make it worse? The Retrouvaille Program is for married couples facing difficult challenges in their relationships. It is primarily a practical program to improve communication, build stronger marriages and help couples reconnect. Presenters are not trained marriages counselors, but rather couples sharing their personal stories of marital struggles and the tools they used to rediscover their love. For confidential information about the Retrouvaille program, or to register for the upcoming weekend that begins on Friday, May 13, 2022, please visit our website www.helpourmarriage.org or call 1-800-470-2230 and you will be connected directly and confidentially to a couple from Long Island/Metro Retrouvaille who can help.
