From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

Again, we hear the Father’s declaration that Jesus is the Beloved of the Father. We are reminded to listen to Him. Isn’t that a wonderful theme for Lent: “Listen to Him?” St. Paul reminds us that through the grace of God we have been called to holiness. That holiness comes from our embracing the Word of God in our lives. The Word, we are told, is life giving and is the crux to becoming a true believer. This journey of Lent is an invitation to rid ourselves of all that distracts us from the work of knowing Jesus as our Lord and Savior. If we immerse ourselves in the teaching of Jesus as revealed in Sacred Scripture, we find that path to Jesus.

The Disciples were overcome when encountering Moses and Elijah. Moses, as we know, is the one who heard God’s command and led the people of Israel out of slavery into the Promised Land. Elijah is the great prophet who would appear when the Messiah came. In this reading of the Transfiguration, God is now setting into motion His plan for salvation. As Lent progresses, we will hear how Jesus will come closer to His ultimate reality...the Cross. Along that journey, Jesus will reveal who He is.

As we journey in life, there will be many circumstances that God offers us to reveal who we are. As we heard in the Old Testament, Abram (who later would receive the new name, Abraham) was asked to leave behind his old life so that God could make him the father of many. Abram did as the Lord commanded and was blest and made great for all generations. So in the moments of life, we also are called to leave behind our old lives; maybe not leaving our families and homeland, but certainly those moments of sin and selfishness.

This becomes possible in the power that Jesus offers us in the Holy Spirit. To seek out that new life, we have to know who we are willing to follow. To know Jesus is to open the Sacred Scriptures and let the Word take root in our hearts. Reading the Bible is a great comfort and offers us the hope of God as revealed in Jesus. When Jesus becomes our true Lord and Savior, we want to know Him even more. When we know Him more fully, we want to follow Him. Use these days of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving to “Listen to Jesus.” Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI said, “Listen to Jesus and obey His voice. This is the only way that leads to joy and love.” This listening is brought to perfection when we not only listen with our ears, but, more importantly, with our hearts. If you spend these days open to Jesus’ Word as the direction in your life, then Easter can be more than a day of family, eggs and chocolate. It can be the true day of joy and celebration for all that God has done.

During this Lenten Season, let us ask and invite one person back to church. That invitation should come from your love of Jesus and always without judgment. It may be a good Lenten act of charity.

A reminder that, in addition to the 9:00 AM daily Mass, we will celebrate Stations of the Cross each Friday at 7:00 PM. Lent is also a wonderful time to avail yourself of the healing sacrament of Confession.

Our St. Mary’s High School Pilgrimage to Greece participants have returned home safely. It was a wonderful experience of the footsteps of St. Paul and a deep spiritual renewal for all present. I am most grateful to Mr. Anthony Cannetella, our Theology Chair and Campus Minister, for organizing the pilgrimage; Fr. Dominik, the Chaplain, and our faculty chaperones for all their work. I am also grateful to the faculty and parishioners who assisted in driving the students to Newark Airport after the situation that occurred in Kennedy Airport resulting in their original flight being canceled.

In Jesus, our Crucified Lord, Fr. Bob

J Stewards of God’s Gifts

In today’s Second Reading, we are reminded that preaching the Gospel will not always be easy—but that we can trust in God’s help.

Living Stewardship ~ Pillar of Prayer: Today’s Gospel reading tells us of the Transfiguration—which happens to be the Fourth Luminous Mystery of the Rosary. This week, learn to pray the Rosary if you do not know how to already. Lent is the perfect time to adopt a new spiritual practice.

Reading I: Exodus 17:3-7

“Strike the rock, and the water will flow from it for the people to drink.”

Reading II: Romans 5:1-2, 5-8

The love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

Gospel: John 4:5-42

“Whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst.”

Question for Adults: What am I doing this Lent to help deepen my faith?

Question for Children: Do I understand what Jesus means by “living water?”

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Prayer for the Eucharistic Revival

My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love You! I beg pardon for those who do not believe, nor adore, nor hope, nor love You. Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I adore You profoundly. I offer You the most precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifference by which He is offended. And, through the infinite merits of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg of You the conversion of sinners.

Prayer of Love by St. John Vianney

I love You, O my God and my only desire is to love You until my last breath. I love You, O infinitely lovable God, and I prefer to die loving You rather than to live for a single moment without loving You. I love You, O my God, and I long for heaven only to know the bliss of loving You perfectly. I love You, O my God, and I only fear going to hell because there I will never experience the sweet consolation of loving You. O my God, if my tongue is not able to say at every opportunity that I love You, at least I want my heart to repeat it to You as many times as I take a breath. My God, give me the grace of suffering out of love for You, of loving You while I suffer; give me the grace of one day breathing my last breath out of love for You and at the same time feeling how much I love You. The closer I come to my final end, the more I beseech You to intensify and perfect my love for You. Amen.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

In the Gospel Jesus is transfigured and a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased: Listen to him.” Do we listen to Jesus when he asks us to take care of our brothers and sisters who are suffering? Your gift in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box will help the poor to celebrate the grace of God’s love this Easter.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@ stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.

Parish Social Ministry

As serious needs arise, and with food prices at all time highs, we find our food pantry has become a vital resource for so many people. We distribute food to over 150 people per month. Your continued donations of food to the pantry allows many families to have food especially for their children.

No family should go hungry, and we make sure, with your help, that does not happen. Thank you for keeping our pantry the vital food bank it has become. We are in need of the following items:

Knights of Columbus

Father William A. Daly S.J. Council #2122

Serving St. Mary’s Parish in Manhasset and St. Aloysius Parish In Great Neck

What is a Knights of Columbus Family?

We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith.

Our lives, time, efforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism.

We come from different places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world.

It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice.

Become a Knights of Columbus family.

Montforte Irpino: 11 January 1899 - Rome: 2 May 1934

O Most Holy Trinity, Who deigned to raise Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo to the priesthood, and endowed him with precious gifts, especially that of a burning love for suffering and immolation, we humbly beseech You, if it be Your will, that he may be glorified on earth, and that we may obtain through his intercession the particular grace which we ask for with living faith. Amen.
