From the Pastor’s Desk

21:19)

In today’s Gospel, Jesus is offering His followers encouragement when the road to faithfulness becomes difficult. He predicts that they will suffer much in His name and that the persecution may cause them to scatter. This is preempted by the question of the end of time. In both cases, Jesus tells them that they are not to be concerned. Faithfulness and trust will keep them grounded and secure in the knowledge of God’s love. He reminds them that the Holy Spirit will guide and guard them in times of trial.

What great advice this is for each of us. How often we can be leery about speaking about our faith in Jesus. Maybe it stems from our cultural understanding of separation of Church and State. Maybe it is from our fear of being labeled as religious fanatics. Whatever the reason, we are called by our baptism to bear witness to Jesus at all times. In acknowledging Him in this life, we will be acknowledged in the world to come. So persevere!

Sometimes, in the times of difficulty and stress in our lives, we may be tempted give up on hope. When the road seems so difficult and life so burdensome, we can feel that God has abandoned us or, at the very least, that He is no longer hearing our cries. The Scriptures remind us that God is ever faithful and near to those who call upon His name. So persevere!

There is much talk in the media about the end of time. Movies, books and television programs seem to be focusing more and more on the question of when the world will end. This surfaces fear in some of dying or of entrance into Eternal Life. The promise of Jesus is to trust that in all moments God is present with His hand to guide and protect us. If we have accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior, then we have nothing to fear. Jesus wants to offer us His comfort. But we have to be open to the presence of Jesus in our lives. This comes from our prayer life and participation in the Eucharist. Letting Jesus enter our hearts will bring His peace. So when there seems to be “signs” of the end of time that can make us fearful, we know we have a promise. So persevere!

There is much to make us uncertain in life. We have been given a guarantee that our lives are precious and that we are loved. The prophet Malachi reminds us, “for you who fear (love) my name, there will arise the sun of justice with its healing rays.” May this knowledge give us courage and help us to PERSEVERE!

As a parish we are kept informed by a variety of coverage. I am so grateful for the excellent social media venues we have here at St. Mary’s. To Jane Clifford for creating the beautiful bulletin each week. As editor, her hard work and dedication to this publication is evident in the professional product. An equal thanks goes out to our Director of Communications, Eileen Symmons, for her creative and inspiring daily emails and website. Both keep us so informed and I am so grateful for their presence.

In Jesus, Fr. Bob

DRIVE-THROUGH HOLIDAY FOOD DROP

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 13TH 2:00 - 6:00 PM MONDAY, NOVEMBER 14TH 6:00 -8:30 PM

in the parking lot behind the church

God’s people of all ages are suffering in poverty right here in our neighborhood. They need food assistance all through the year but especially during the holiday season. The Parish Social Ministry office is hosting a “drivethrough holiday food drop” with the goal of collecting the freshest possible food items to allow our neighbors suffering in poverty to enjoy a true feast with their families on Thanksgiving. We will be hosting this drive-through collection on Sunday, November 13th from 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM and on Monday, November 14th from 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM. This drive through collection will take place in the parking lot behind the church. (You may also drop the items by our office on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM the weeks of November 7th and 14th.)

The items we are collecting for this drive are:

Frozen Turkeys (10-15 lbs.)

Frozen Oven Stuffer Chickens

Frozen Pounds of Butter

Frozen Pies (either homemade and boxed or bought frozen)

Frozen Crescent Rolls or Biscuits

Boxes or Bags of Stuffing Mix Cans of Carrots, Corn, Beans, Cranberry Sauce

Cans of Turkey Gravy 3-8 Pound Bags of Potatoes Quarts of Milk (no gallons)

Please consider donating to this special meal if you can.

Unfortunately, for these families this holiday meal is only that - a one day meal. While we hope it will be very enjoyable for them, they still need food assistance throughout the rest of the month and into next year. The St. Mary’s community does a wonderful job of supporting these families, but we are asking for a little extra at this difficult time. If you are able to provide grocery store gift cards to the parish social ministry office, they would be put to good use providing much needed food to these families during the holidays and into next year. In addition to grocery store gift cards, we will be providing non-perishable food items to all our families throughout the year. Please consider donating any non-perishable food you can. We are always in need and nothing goes to waste. Thank you in advance for your continued generosity and may God bless you and your family over this holiday season and in 2023.

We are running low now and need to restock the following items (see below). Please donate if you find you are able. God bless you and your families.

Juice Canned Fruit Snacks

Tuna Fish Oatmeal Toiletries

Donations may be left in the donation box located in the south lobby of the Church. Thank you for your generosity and support!

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

The Gospel predicts end times; our challenge though is to live faithfully now. St. Vincent often asked this simple question: “What would Jesus Christ do, if he were in my place now? Ask yourself “What would Jesus Christ do?” and then put your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul poor box so that those who are suffering will be able to celebrate Thanksgiving.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. Share Christmas

“Blessed is the one who considers the poor!

In the day of trouble, the Lord delivers him.” Psalm 41:1

This is the 26th year that St. Mary’s Parish Social Ministry will be supporting local families who struggle to provide a traditional Christmas for their family members. Our support for these families, of course, includes providing food for them. But we also like to provide gifts for them and their children. Many of these families rarely have the disposable income to purchase special gifts for themselves or those they love. They are truly struggling every month just to make ends meet, some months they have more success than others.

We are offering a couple of ways for our parishioners to help these families have a less stressful holiday if they choose to.

Our office really appreciates donations in the form of gift cards. This allows us to shop for individuals around the holidays, tailoring their gifts to best meet their needs. Any leftover gift cards are used throughout the year to support these families with needed items. An example of when we would use a leftover gift card is around September for a single Amazon Macy’s Target

Marshalls/TJ Maxx Raindew American Express

Visa

If you prefer to shop for gifts yourself, please fill out the form below, and we will send you a “Wish List” created by a specific family or a person in need. You may also email kkosciusko@stmary.ws to get on the “Share Christmas Shopper” list.

Gifts and gift cards can be dropped off to our office Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. They can also be dropped at the Parish Office during normal business hours. Please label any donations with your name and “Share Christmas.” Please deliver all gifts by Thursday, December 15th.

As always, your generosity and the spirit in which you give to those in need are so appreciated. We sincerely hope you and your family experience the beauty of God’s grace this holiday season. We hope you have much joy and peace and many beautiful moments.

Parish Social Ministry

Bereavement Ministry

The Parish Social Ministry office at St. Mary’s Manhasset will be offering two weekly support groups for the bereaved and those struggling with unresolved loss starting the week of January 23rd, 2023. Both sessions will run for ten consecutive weeks. The primary goals of the groups are to help the participants learn about the grief process, to develop skills to manage their grief, and to help them adjust to living in a world without the deceased. The groups are open to anyone who has lost a spouse, partner, parent, or sibling. One group will be offered on Wednesdays from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM and a second group will be offered on Saturdays from 9:30 to 11:00 AM.

Wednesday’s session will be facilitated by Tara Barenello and Bernadette Casalino. Saturday’s session will be facilitated by Marie Granieri, Dr. Robert Windorf, and Jordon Rini. All facilitators were trained by Dr. Lou Sabatini who is a bereavement counselor with over thirty years of experience. Tara also has an MS in counseling and an Advanced Certificate in Mental Health, Marie Granieri has a Masters in Sacred Theology, and Dr. Robert Windorf is a long time educator and has worked with the Passionists to facilitate retreats for young adults.

In an effort to meet the needs of all of those suffering with grief from loss, we are offering two different types of bereavement counseling. The Saturday session will be rich with Catholic faith-based tools, using Scripture and prayer to help in the healing process. Marie Granieri will draw from her in-depth knowledge of the suffering of Christ and the ability to find peace and grace through lamentation to help those in need. The Wednesday sessions will be more secular.

There is a one-time registration fee of $10.00 to cover the costs of the course. To register for a group, please send a check made out to St. Mary’s PSM and the requested information below to St. Mary’s PSM Office, 1300 Northern Blvd., Manhasset, NY 11030 by January 5th. For more information on the sessions, please call Kathleen Kosciusko at 917-8642802 (cell) or 516-365-2705 (office). You can also email her at kkosciusko@stmary.ws.

Religious Education

Dear St. Mary Families,

Our “Confirmandi” spiritual retreat day at the Seminary of Immaculate Conception draws near. Grade 8 students will attend (either on November 29th or 30th) a contemplative and reflective day led by the Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal. This year’s theme centers on the meaning of Christ’s call to be a saint, and the necessary ingredients to pursue holiness in the young Catholic’s faith journey. Besides those we call the “great” saints, there have always been the hidden saints, who are also sanctified in obscurity and silence. To become a saint requires full cooperation with the works of grace to desire Christ above all. Adoration in the chapel especially carries the sweetness of his love and presence into every heart. What a gift it is for Confirmandi to be surrounded by the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

The St. Mary’s Confirmation Retreat is one day never to be forgotten. We joyfully remember the spiritual encounter of being like the water that blessed Mary placed into her Son’s hands – to become wine – and cherish it forever.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Prayer of Adoration

I adore you, O Jesus, God of love, truly present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I adore you who has come to your own but were not received by them.

I adore you, whom the majority of mankind rejected and despised.

I adore you, whom the impious incessantly offend by their sacrileges and blasphemies.

I adore you, who are grieved by the coldness and indifference of a vast number of Christians.

I adore you, O Infinite Goodness, who has wrought so many miracles, in order to reveal your love to us.

I adore you, with all the angels and saints, and with those chosen souls that are now already the blessed of your Father and are all aglow with burning love for you.

I adore you with all your friends, O Jesus!

With them I prostrate myself at the foot of the Altar, to offer you my most profound homage, to receive your Divine Inspiration, and to implore your grace.

Oh, how good it is for me to be here with you!

How sweet to hear the voice of my beloved!

O victim of divine love!

A piercing cry breaks forth from your heart here on the altar, as it once did on Calvary; it is the cry of love; “I thirst,” you call to your children, “I thirst for your love!

Come all, whom I love as my Father has loved me; come and quench the thirst that consumes me!

Lord Jesus, behold I come. My heart is small, but it is all yours. You are a prisoner in our tabernacles, you the Lord of Lords!

And love it is, that holds you here as such! You leave the tabernacle only to come to us, to unite yourself with the faithful soul and allow your divine love to reign within.

O King of love! Come, live and reign in me.

I want no other law but the law of your love!

No, no, I henceforth desire to know nothing, neither of this world nor of what is in it, nor of myself; your love alone shall rule in me eternally.

O Jesus, grant me this grace!

Break all my fetters, strip me of all that is not of yourself, in order that your love may be my life here below, and my happiness and delight in eternity, Amen.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Sundays at the 9:00 AM Mass

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction Mondays

3:00 - 5:00 PM

What Is It? After the Opening Prayer, children gather and are dismissed from the church with a blessing by the priest, proceed to the chapel for the Sunday Readings and a short reflection on the Gospel, all on a level that children can understand. They are returned to the church at the beginning of the Creed.

How Can You Help? We are in need of a few more people who would like to spend a short while helping the children understand the Gospel reading for the day. Please consider sitting in on Sunday to see what it’s about and/or email Jane at bulletin@stmary.ws.

What is a Knights of Columbus Family?

We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith.

Our lives, time, efforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism.

We come from different places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world.

It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice.

Become a Knights of Columbus family.

Don Bosco Squires Circle #548 is Recruiting New Members

WHO WE ARE

The Columbian Squires is an international fraternity of approximately 25,000 Catholic young men, ages 10 to 18, in over 1,500 circles worldwide. Circles exist, or have existed, throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Panama, Cuba, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Guam, and on U.S. military bases abroad.

BECOME A SQUIRE

The Squires is designed to develop young men as leaders who understand their Catholic religion, who have a strong commitment to the Church and who are ready, willing and capable of patterning their lives after the Youth Christ.

A Squires circle must be sponsored by a council or assembly, but is run by and for young men, under the guidance of several Knights of Columbus from our Fr. William A. Daly #2122 Council, who serve as counselors. Squires are to be leaders, thus, to the degree they are able, they are given the opportunity to lead, by running their own meetings, investing their own members, setting their circle’s agenda and implementing their program of activities.

Knights of Columbus

Father William A. Daly S.J. Council #2122 Coat Drive

November 5 - November 21

The Knights will be accepting new and gently used winter coats, jackets, gloves, mittens, scarves, hats, and the like. Boxes will be set up in the south lobby of the church. The Knights would like to thank everyone in advance for their continued generosity. For rather large donations, please call Tom Mayerhauser at 516-852-0812.

Squires have fun. They meet new friends; they travel, play sports and socialize. Squires are serious-minded, too. Squires are involved in promoting vocations, marching in defense of unborn life, feeding the hungry, clothing the poor, supporting Special Olympics and promoting Catholic education, among countless other activities. Thus, the Squires circle is an athletic team, a youth group, a social club, a cultural and civic improvement association, a management training course, a civil rights organization and a spiritual development program all rolled into one.

JOIN US

We have a Squires Recruitment Committee in action, which is actively looking for new members. For information, please contact Thomas Mayerhauser at 516852-0812 or tjm51463@gmail.com.
