The Solemnity of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, King of the Universe | November 20, 2022

)

A Reflection by Father Dominik

The power of imagination is one which is both misunderstood and greatly underrated in the sphere of culture. In fact, I would argue that fantasy can often convey deeper truth about the human spirit and our society more than any other genre can. The literary device of symbols is profound in fantasy novels in ways that typical fiction cannot dream of reaching. This is reflected in the two most prominent fantasy authors of the contemporary era, J.R.R Tolkien, the author of the Lord of the Rings and George R.R. Martin, the author and mastermind of the successful HBO Series, Game of Thrones. Even though they belong to the fantasy genre, I would argue that both authors provide prophetic commentary on our current culture’s obsession with power and kingship. Tolkien was acutely aware of man’s nature and lust for power. This obsession with power is symbolized in the Ring which Frodo and his fellow protagonists in the novel are asked to destroy. George Martin symbolizes power through the Iron Throne. Martin, as an atheist, presents his world with a lot of grey characters. Yet, he is clear that those who persistently seek power are often corrupted in the process. As Lord Acton said, “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

The fantasy worlds of Tolkien and George Martin are mythical projections of our current world and it is not a coincidence that both present to us the dangerous shadow to man’s pursuit of power. Look at the political culture today and the same obsession with power is on full display. It is not enough for one political party to obtain a majority. There must be a complete annihilation of the other side. When a culture deviates further from God and objective morality ceases to exist, politics devolves into a power struggle. It is no longer about what power does, but rather who has the power. When society cannot agree on what is true, good and beautiful, we are driven into a culture war about what our fundamental values are. The ones who will decide will be those who sit on the Iron Throne. No wonder men are obsessed with having control, because with power they can determine and impose their will on others. Society then becomes a political and spiritual battleground between ambitious men. Hence man will seek the crown, the ring, and the throne at all costs.

Despite the current climate, the Solemnity of Christ the King offers us a dose of hope. Notice how radically different Jesus is from other kings. The Gospel presents to us the great paradox of power. When a village chose to ignore Jesus and his disciples, James and John said, “Lord, do you want us to bid fire come down from heaven and consume them?” But he turned and rebuked them. (Luke 9:55-56). Jesus rejects the temptation to abuse his power the way typical men do. This refusal is perfectly revealed in the crucifixion. “The rulers scoffed at him, saying, ‘He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!’ The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him vinegar, and saying, ‘If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!’ There was also an inscription over him, ‘This is the King of the Jews’” (Luke 23:36-39). Jesus is mockingly declared King. Why could Jesus not use the cross as a moment to save himself and prove to everyone that he is truly God and the King foretold by the prophets? Jesus had the power to feed five thousand, to cure the blind, the sick, the deaf and the mute. Jesus was not shy to walk on water and remind his adversaries of his divine authority. Jesus had the power to raise the dead. This makes the crucifixion scene all the more puzzling and yet, at the same time, presents the profound meaning of what power is meant to be. The true meaning and purpose of power is love. If modern man’s pursuit is the will to power. Jesus’ journey is the will to love. The true meaning of power reaches its possible limit in Calvary.

The game of politics brings Jesus to his knees; and the religious and political leaders are set to annihilate Jesus like all their other political adversaries. Jesus does not resist the powers that be. Rather, he fully embraces the brute force and cruelty of man’s power and will. The great paradox is that the game of politics and man’s obsession with power become the exact means for God to reveal his fullest expression of Kingship which is Death and Resurrection. Jesus turns our common perceptions upside down. Where the world seeks crowns made of gold, Jesus seeks a crown of thorns. Where the world seeks iron thrones, Jesus seeks the wooden cross. Where the world uses power to dominate their enemies, Jesus uses power to love his enemies. The paradox of the cross reveals both Jesus’ weakness and absolute glory. Church of Saint Mary | 4

A Reflection by Father Dominik (con’t.)

The Church is called to mirror this paradox to every generation. Jesus gave power and authority to his Apostles, but instructed them at the Last Supper that power and authority are meant for service and not self-glorification. Jesus said, “You call me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you” (John 17:14-16). We must break the cycle of power politics and live the paradox of the Gospel. By putting on the crown of thorns, society will become what it was originally envisioned to be, a kingdom bound, not by ambitious men, but by the Spirit of God. This is the path to true peace and justice. Like Frodo, we must resist the temptation to possess power for our own will and learn to destroy the ring. Salvation will not be gained through domination, but through sacrificial love for others.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

A Hymn for the Feast of Christ the King (An Army of Youth)

Chorus: An army of youth flying the standards of truth, We’re fighting for Christ, the Lord. Heads lifted high, Catholic Action our cry, And the cross our only sword.

On earth’s battlefield never a vantage we’ll yield As dauntlessly on we swing. Comrades true, dare and do ’neath the Queen’s white and blue, For our flag, for our faith for Christ the King.

Christ lifts His hands; the King commands; His challenge, “Come and follow Me.”

From every side, With eager stride, We form in the lines of victory. Let foemen lurk, and laggards shirk, We throw our fortunes with the Lord, Mary’s son, till the world is won. We have pledged you our loyal word.

Our hearts are pure, our minds are sure; No sin our gleaming helmet taints. No foeman fierce our shield shall pierce; We’re captained by God’s unconquered saints. Yet peace we bring, and a gentle King, Whose law is light and life and love. Mary’s son, may thy will be done Here on earth as it is above.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction Mondays

3:00 - 5:00 PM

This hymn about Christ the King was written by American Roman Catholic priest Daniel A. Lord SJ (1888 - 1955) and was first published in 1932 in The Queen’s Work, the magazine of the Jesuit-sponsored Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary. (http://www.americamagazine.org/content/article.cfm?article_id=4533)

It was commonly used in the Student Catholic Action movement and other related organizations; e.g., Catholic Students’ Mission Crusade in the mid 20th century.

Thanks for your help!

We are looking forward to another enjoyable and successful event this year. Hoping to have you join us on December 2nd!

Monday, November 21st - The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

This Catholic feast began in the Eastern Church in the 6th Century A. D. No mention of this event is recounted in the Gospels, but it comes from the Protoevangelium of James, discovered in the 2nd century A. D. St. James writes the story of Mary’s parents, Joachim and Anne, an older and childless couple. Both were faithful to God and prayed for a child. Eventually, even though older, they were blessed with the birth of a daughter, Mary. In gratitude to God for this gift, Mary was consecrated to the Lord by her parents. She was taken by them to the temple in Jerusalem when she was three years old.

In 1372, Pope Gregory XI introduced this feast to the Roman Catholic Church and in 1472 it was included in the Roman Missal. The Byzantine Church hs recognized this day since 543 A. D., when the Basilica of Saint Mary was completed in Jerusalem.

The Feast of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary signifies the lifelong and total devotion that Mary made to God through her Immaculate Conception. Mary listened to the voice of God while still in her childhood and agreed to become the temple of the Son of God, Jesus Christ.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

Today as we celebrate Christ the King, may we open the door of our heart so wide that we may listen to the voice of Jesus calling us to help build his kingdom here on earth. In the month of November, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to help build the kingdom of God by assisting families with food, utility and rent bills, etc. Thank You!

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. In the day of trouble, the Lord delivers him.” Psalm 41:1

This is the 26th year that St. Mary’s Parish Social Ministry will be supporting local families who struggle to provide a traditional Christmas for their family members. Our support for these families, of course, includes providing food for them. But we also like to provide gifts for them and their children. Many of these families rarely have the disposable income to purchase special gifts for themselves or those they love. They are truly struggling every month just to make ends meet, some months they have more success than others.

We are offering a couple of ways for our parishioners to help these families have a less stressful holiday if they choose to.

Our office really appreciates donations in the form of gift cards. This allows us to shop for individuals around the holidays, tailoring their gifts to best meet their needs. Any leftover gift cards are used throughout the year to support these families with needed items. An example of when we would use a leftover gift card is around September for a single Amazon Macy’s Target

If you prefer to shop for gifts yourself, please fill out the form below, and we will send you a “Wish List” created by a specific family or a person in need. You may also email kkosciusko@stmary.ws to get on the “Share Christmas Shopper” list.

Gifts and gift cards can be dropped off to our office Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. They can also be dropped at the Parish Office during normal business hours. Please label any donations with your name and “Share Christmas.” Please deliver all gifts by Thursday, December 15th.

As always, your generosity and the spirit in which you give to those in need are so appreciated. We sincerely hope you and your family experience the beauty of God’s grace this holiday season. We hope you have much joy and peace and many beautiful moments.

Parish Social Ministry

Bereavement Ministry

The Parish Social Ministry office at St. Mary’s Manhasset will be offering two weekly support groups for the bereaved and those struggling with unresolved loss starting the week of January 23rd, 2023. Both sessions will run for ten consecutive weeks. The primary goals of the groups are to help the participants learn about the grief process, to develop skills to manage their grief, and to help them adjust to living in a world without the deceased. The groups are open to anyone who has lost a spouse, partner, parent, or sibling. One group will be offered on Wednesdays from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM and a second group will be offered on Saturdays from 9:30 to 11:00 AM.

Wednesday’s session will be facilitated by Tara Barenello and Bernadette Casalino. Saturday’s session will be facilitated by Marie Granieri, Dr. Robert Windorf, and Jordon Rini. All facilitators were trained by Dr. Lou Sabatini who is a bereavement counselor with over thirty years of experience. Tara also has an MS in counseling and an Advanced Certificate in Mental Health, Marie Granieri has a Masters in Sacred Theology, and Dr. Robert Windorf is a long time educator and has worked with the Passionists to facilitate retreats for young adults.

In an effort to meet the needs of all of those suffering with grief from loss, we are offering two different types of bereavement counseling. The Saturday session will be rich with Catholic faith-based tools, using Scripture and prayer to help in the healing process. Marie Granieri will draw from her in-depth knowledge of the suffering of Christ and the ability to find peace and grace through lamentation to help those in need. The Wednesday sessions will be more secular.

There is a one-time registration fee of $10.00 to cover the costs of the course. To register for a group, please send a check made out to St. Mary’s PSM and the requested information below to St. Mary’s PSM Office, 1300 Northern Blvd., Manhasset, NY 11030 by January 5th. For more information on the sessions, please call Kathleen Kosciusko at 917-8642802 (cell) or 516-365-2705 (office). You can also email her at kkosciusko@stmary.ws. Name Address

Religious Education

St. Mary Religious Education Family,

November is the time of the year to joyfully think about the fulfillment of all that God promises to his beloved seekers. The coming wonder of the Advent season especially holds the Mother of God at the very center of our lives. God places all his trust in her trust in Him. It is in the sweetness of the ordinary and everyday life that the Savior comes. Mary seeks no special place in the world as her Son fulfills the will of the Father. She places herself within the multitude of people searching for Him. No one calls out “Make way for Mary – she is his Mother!” No – the handmaiden of the Lord gently moves alongside the stranger, walks with the lost and is hidden amongst the forgotten to hear her Son’s voice. With perfect humility, Mary shows us how to not only seek Christ – but how to find Him.

Catechists are teaching the children how the “Yes” blessed Mary gives to God – is the “yes” she offers in love for us all. Knowing that the Catholic faith journey will enter difficult and unexpected places, we can look to our heavenly Mother and St. Joseph for help in recognizing the face of Christ in every other person and circumstance.

May our hearts be illumined during the coming days of Advent’s light.

Mrs. Granieri

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Sundays at the 9:00 AM Mass

What Is It? After the Opening Prayer, children gather and are dismissed from the church with a blessing by the priest, proceed to the chapel for the Sunday Readings and a short reflection on the Gospel, all on a level that children can understand. They are returned to the church at the beginning of the Creed.

How Can You Help? We are in need of a few more people who would like to spend a short while helping the children understand the Gospel reading for the day. Please consider sitting in on Sunday to see what it’s about and/or email Jane at bulletin@stmary.ws.

Don Bosco Squires Circle #548 is Recruiting New Members

WHO WE ARE

The Columbian Squires is an international fraternity of approximately 25,000 Catholic young men, ages 10 to 18, in over 1,500 circles worldwide. Circles exist, or have existed, throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Panama, Cuba, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Guam, and on U.S. military bases abroad.

BECOME A SQUIRE

The Squires is designed to develop young men as leaders who understand their Catholic religion, who have a strong commitment to the Church and who are ready, willing and capable of patterning their lives after the Youth Christ.

The Fr. William Daly Council #2122 would like to thank Fr Bob for his continued support in allowing us Knights to do our charitable work and even more importantly to you, the good people of St. Mary’s, for all your support of the work we are doing. We could not do it without your support.

The Knights of Columbus donated baby diapers, blankets, formula, and baby items to Catholic Health Mercy Medical Center.

A Squires circle must be sponsored by a council or assembly, but is run by and for young men, under the guidance of several Knights of Columbus from our Fr. William A. Daly #2122 Council, who serve as counselors. Squires are to be leaders, thus, to the degree they are able, they are given the opportunity to lead, by running their own meetings, investing their own members, setting their circle’s agenda and implementing their program of activities.

Squires have fun. They meet new friends; they travel, play sports and socialize. Squires are serious-minded, too. Squires are involved in promoting vocations, marching in defense of unborn life, feeding the hungry, clothing the poor, supporting Special Olympics and promoting Catholic education, among countless other activities. Thus, the Squires circle is an athletic team, a youth group, a social club, a cultural and civic improvement association, a management training course, a civil rights organization and a spiritual development program all rolled into one.

JOIN US

We have a Squires Recruitment Committee in action, which is actively looking for new members. For information, please contact Thomas Mayerhauser at 516852-0812 or tjm51463@gmail.com.
