Dear Parishioners,

“So, you too must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.” (Matthew 24:44)

As we begin the Advent Season, the Gospel challenges us to be watchful and alert for the coming of the Lord. The Season of Advent is like a stop sign on our journey of life. As we stop, we are called to reflect on what in our life, from the past year, has begun to clutter our lives and our hearts. Are there areas and issues in our lives that keep us from preparing a place for Jesus?

The days of preparation for Christmas can sometimes cause the season of Advent to fade into the background. I dare say we all begin with good intentions, but as the days move forward, the rush and scramble of the Christmas season take hold of us. So I encourage you to be aware of these days of preparation and enter into the prayer and self-reflection that we are invited into by the Advent Season. Hold out as long as you can to not fall into the mistake that the Christmas Season begins right after (or even before) Thanksgiving. Our sacred holiday of Christmas has been highjacked by retailers and the secular world. Let us hold fast that we may prepare for the coming of Our Savior, Jesus.

Many families display an Advent Wreath in their homes, and before dinner say prayers of blessing before lighting the candle. The Advent Wreath is the main symbol of the season. You will notice that the wreath has four candles, representing the four weeks of Advent. Each week we light a candle to remind us that the time of salvation draws near. Three of the candles are purple: the first, second and fourth weeks. Purple is the color of waiting, conversion, and hope. The third week is Gaudete (or Rejoice) Sunday when we light a pink or rose-colored candle. It is in the third week that we first hear in the Scriptures of the coming of the Messiah. The Entrance Chant or Antiphon calls us to “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice.” The color of joy is white and when that is mixed with purple it creates pink. But even in that joy of hearing of the Messiah, we are reminded to continue to focus on our preparations and hence the fourth week is again a purple candle.

If you have never had (or continue to have) an Advent Wreath, I encourage you to utilize this Catholic Tradition. If you go online, you can find prayers for each week’s blessings. How wonderful a custom to be able to bring the symbols of the season into our homes!

May Jesus, our Messiah, and Mary, Mother of the New Advent, bless you all. Fr. Bob

November 27th - The Feast of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal

The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to a Sister of Charity, St. Catherine Laboure numerous times in her convent’s chapel in Paris during 1830. Our Lady warned St. Catherine of wars to come, in 1830, and again in 1860. On November 27th, 1830, Mary appeared standing on a globe. Rays of light shone from her hands, and she explained to St. Catherine that these were the graces that would be given to anyone who asked for them. St. Catherine was shown an image, now familiar to every Catholic as the Miraculous Medal. Mary asked her to have a medal struck after a model of this image, and to spread devotion to this medal. After two years of investigation, approval was given for the medals to be struck and distributed. So many stories of healings quickly circulated that the medal soon became known as “miraculous.”

The chapel, where St. Catherine experienced her visions, is located at the mother house of the Daughters of Charity in Paris. The incorrupt bodies of both St. Catherine Labouré and Saint Louise de Marrillac (a co-founder of the Congregation of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul), are interred in the chapel.

ADVENT WITH MARY

“May the Virgin Mary help us, as we approach Christmas, not to allow ourselves to be distracted by external things, but make space in our hearts for Him who has already come and wants to come again to heal our illnesses and give us His joy.” - Pope Francis, December 19, 2019

Parish Social Ministry

Share Christmas

This is the 26th year that St. Mary’s Parish Social Ministry will be supporting local families who struggle to provide a traditional Christmas for their family members. Our support for these families, of course, includes providing food for them. But we also like to provide gifts for them and their children. Many of these families rarely have the disposable income to purchase special gifts for themselves or those they love. They are truly struggling every month just to make ends meet, some months they have more success than others.

We are offering a couple of ways for our parishioners to help these families have a less stressful holiday if they choose to.

Our office really appreciates donations in the form of gift cards. This allows us to shop for individuals around the holidays, tailoring their gifts to best meet their needs. Any leftover gift cards are used throughout the year to support these families with needed items. An example of when we would use a leftover gift card is around September for a single mom to buy shoes for her children before school. Suggestions for gift cards that would make wonderful gifts include:

Amazon Macy’s Target

Marshalls/TJ Maxx Raindew American Express

Visa

If you prefer to shop for gifts yourself, please fill out the form below, and we will send you a “Wish List” created by a specific family or a person in need. You may also email kkosciusko@stmary.ws to get on the “Share Christmas Shopper” list.

Gifts and gift cards can be dropped off to our office Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. They can also be dropped at the Parish Office during normal business hours. Please label any donations with your name and “Share Christmas.” Please deliver all gifts by Thursday, December 15th.

As always, your generosity and the spirit in which you give to those in need are so appreciated. We sincerely hope you and your family experience the beauty of God’s grace this holiday season. We hope you have much joy and peace and many beautiful moments.

FOOD DROP

DEED. Proverbs 19:17

St. Mary's parishioners, our pantry shelves, and our hearts are overflowing! Thank you for the tremendous outpouring of generosity for our Parish Social Ministry Holiday Food Drive. With your donations, we collected enough food to feed all 60 of the families we serve fresh meals at BOTH Thanksgiving AND Christmas! We also received enough canned goods to take us into 2023. It is wonderful to be a part of a parish whose community provides real joy around the holidays to families who struggle daily.

Our office would also like to recognize the very hardworking, kind, and spirited students from St. Mary's High School for their contribution to this drive. They really enjoyed working together as a team to serve our underserved. They worked hard over the course of our two-day event, collecting food, checking expiration dates, bagging food in preparation for distribution, and much more.

Parishioners and volunteers, please know that you are appreciated by us and, most importantly, by the clients served through our Office of Parish Social Ministry. May God's blessings be yours this Thanksgiving!

Bereavement Ministry

The Parish Social Ministry office at St. Mary’s Manhasset will be offering two weekly support groups for the bereaved and those struggling with unresolved loss starting the week of January 23rd, 2023. Both sessions will run for ten consecutive weeks. The primary goals of the groups are to help the participants learn about the grief process, to develop skills to manage their grief, and to help them adjust to living in a world without the deceased. The groups are open to anyone who has lost a spouse, partner, parent, or sibling. One group will be offered on Wednesdays from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM and a second group will be offered on Saturdays from 9:30 to 11:00 AM.

Wednesday’s session will be facilitated by Tara Barenello and Bernadette Casalino. Saturday’s session will be facilitated by Marie Granieri, Dr. Robert Windorf, and Jordon Rini. All facilitators were trained by Dr. Lou Sabatini who is a bereavement counselor with over thirty years of experience. Tara also has an MS in counseling and an Advanced Certificate in Mental Health, Marie Granieri has a Masters in Sacred Theology, and Dr. Robert Windorf is a long time educator and has worked with the Passionists to facilitate retreats for young adults.

In an effort to meet the needs of all of those suffering with grief from loss, we are offering two different types of bereavement counseling. The Saturday session will be rich with Catholic faith-based tools, using Scripture and prayer to help in the healing process. Marie Granieri will draw from her in-depth knowledge of the suffering of Christ and the ability to find peace and grace through lamentation to help those in need. The Wednesday sessions will be more secular.

There is a one-time registration fee of $10.00 to cover the costs of the course. To register for a group, please send a check made out to St. Mary’s PSM and the requested information below to St. Mary’s PSM Office, 1300 Northern Blvd., Manhasset, NY 11030 by January 5th. For more information on the sessions, please call Kathleen Kosciusko at 917-8642802 (cell) or 516-365-2705 (office). You can also email her at kkosciusko@stmary.ws.

St. Mary’s High School Gaels Ink National Letters of Intent

Four student-athletes from the Saint Mary’s College Preparatory High School Class of 2023 announced their college destinations on Thursday, November 10, 2022, during a ceremony held at the school. Three members of the reigning New York State AA Girls Basketball Championship team – the Lady Gaels, held center court in their home gymnasium, Immaculata Hall. A star player on the school’s rising baseball team also joined the ceremony.

With their parents, extended family members, friends, coaches, teammates, and school administrators present for the celebration, the athletes addressed the guests. They spoke about their achievement, thanked God for the gift of their talents, and recognized the school and all who helped them reach this exciting moment. Each announced where they would pursue post-secondary degrees while playing NCAA Division I collegiate sports next year. With their parent’s blessings, each signed their National Letters of Intent.

Congratulations to these student-athletes on their success. We look forward to witnessing their upcoming seasons with the Gaels and following them well into their futures. May God bless them along this incredible journey!

Don Bosco Squires Circle #548 is Recruiting New Members

WHO WE ARE

The Columbian Squires is an international fraternity of approximately 25,000 Catholic young men, ages 10 to 18, in over 1,500 circles worldwide. Circles exist, or have existed, throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Panama, Cuba, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Guam, and on U.S. military bases abroad.

These are the gifts of the Advent season. The gifts you help share here in our community, throughout the year, with your thoughtful stewardship.

Advent is a meaningful time to reflect on your generosity. One special way to give is eGiving. It can simplify your stewardship and provide steady, consistent support to the parish – so we can be ready with programs, services, and ministries for church families and those in our community. Your recurring gifts will sustain our parish, even if you need to miss a Sunday service. It’s easy to get started. Here are the ways to sign up:

• VISIT https://membership.faithdirect.net/NY281

• CALL Customer Service at 866-507-8757

• Scan the QR code above.

Marriage Struggling?

Do you feel alone?

Are you frustrated or angry with each other?

Do you argue or have you just stopped talking to each other? Does talking about it only make it worse?

BECOME A SQUIRE

The Squires is designed to develop young men as leaders who understand their Catholic religion, who have a strong commitment to the Church and who are ready, willing and capable of patterning their lives after the Youth Christ.

you separated or divorced, or thinking about

or divorce?

A Squires circle must be sponsored by a council or assembly, but is run by and for young men, under the guidance of several Knights of Columbus from our Fr. William A. Daly #2122 Council, who serve as counselors. Squires are to be leaders, thus, to the degree they are able, they are given the opportunity to lead, by running their own meetings, investing their own members, setting their circle’s agenda and implementing their program of activities.

The Retrouvaille Program helps couples through difficult times in their marriages. To be connected directly and confidentially to someone who can help, or to register, contact: 1-800-470-2230 or www.helpourmarriage.org

Long Island/Metro Retrouvaille is a 5013c non-profit, peer ministry. Couples of all faiths, or no faith, are encouraged to attend, and no one is ever turned away for lack of funds.

Squires have fun. They meet new friends; they travel, play sports and socialize. Squires are serious-minded, too. Squires are involved in promoting vocations, marching in defense of unborn life, feeding the hungry, clothing the poor, supporting Special Olympics and promoting Catholic education, among countless other activities.

Thus, the Squires circle is an athletic team, a youth group, a social club, a cultural and civic improvement association, a management training course, a civil rights organization and a spiritual development program all rolled into one.

JOIN US

We have a Squires Recruitment Committee in action, which is actively looking for new members. For information, please contact Thomas Mayerhauser at 516852-0812 or tjm51463@gmail.com.

One thing we can count on is change. Some changes are welcomed while much of the time change is feared and avoided at all costs. You have heard people or maybe you say or think:

I love you, but. If, only I had done this. If, only I knew this.

I know these previous statements sound familiar. When we put the but in our thinking, we are working from our thoughts of disappointment and regrets which leave us feeling angry, upset and, many times, stuck.

Let’s consider the “if’s.” When you are working with the “if’s” of life, you are operating from the wish part of our thinking or from fantasy, leaving you, many times, feeling disappointed, sad, and stuck when the “if’s” are not realized.

When you add an “and” to your thinking and speech, you are setting up a road to repair for what you didn’t do, get, or experience. You open up a possibility to realize your wishes or to change your expectations and work from a more positive outlook as to what is possible. For example: Thanksgiving is coming, but I have to see that annoying uncle who overpowers the conversation. Rather say, I have to see that annoying uncle, and I will sit as far away from him as possible, so I don’t have to be subjected to his self-centeredness. This offers you the opportunity to change your behavior by changing

Patricia Pitta

your thinking followed by planning to do a meaningful action where an experience or interaction can become more positive and hopeful. You thought about the situation and planned. You can apply this type of thinking to so many experiences and wants that you have. Get rid of the “If’s” and “but’s” and replace them with the “and,” followed by planning.

There are those times in life where all the best thinking and actions cannot help us with the dilemmas we face. If only we developed a better relationship with God who is available 24/7, we could have a resource that offers us love and support always and in all matters. There are no if’s or but’s with God. HE is always available to have a healthy relationship with you that will enhance your sense of peace and well-being.

It takes interest, time, and devotion to develop any relationship. Do you spend time in prayer with the Lord? Everyone prays in their own way. Do you attend religious services? I know that during COVID many got a bit rusty in our practice due to fear. Many have returned to Sunday Mass while some are still worshipping via the internet. The point is that you have the Lord our God as your resource when you need him. “Just ask and you will receive.”

Asking is a verb that requires action in relationship to building the bond and strength with the Lord. So, there will be no reason to say, “If only I had a relationship with the Lord, HE could help me deal with my life’s dilemmas and issues.”

Thanksgiving is here. Use the gathering or celebrating to invite the Lord into your heart and mind so as to develop your relationship with HIM

in a more meaningful way. When it comes to God, there are no buts, ifs and there are only ands as you develop your connection in whatever way you choose. We are all different in the way we pray. As the Nike commercial says, “Just Do It.” Pray!

Pray as we move into the season of Advent to set an example for those around you. If you are alone, pray to make your relationship more connected with the Lord

A Blessed and Meaningful Thanksgiving to you from the Mental Health Ministry. A prayer below to say at Thanksgiving or any time now:

Please, Dear Lord, bestow upon me and my family the attitude of gratitude. Let me grow in patience and persistence to appreciate all that we have and what we do not have. Many gifts come in the most difficult and rugged packages. Enable in each of us the ability to accept our challenges with strength, love, and peace so we can forge ahead with the love of God in our hearts and minds.

Dear St.

This week, I visited Mrs. Barry and Mrs. Concannon’s Grade 3 catechism class. After the busy school day, students happily gathered around their table of friendship and prayer. Class began with the sharing of a special intention for someone who needs healing, love, and neighborly kindness. The children named God’s blessings using every letter of the alphabet. We reflected on the joyful anticipation of Advent and the Incarnational wonder of the child Jesus born in a humble manger. The Lord’s Prayer was said aloud with the gentle “oneness” of a family.

There was no missing Christ – He was shining in the face of every child and teacher.

May the light of Christ be with all of you, Mrs. Granieri

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Sundays at the

9:00 AM Mass

What Is It? After the Opening Prayer, children gather and are dismissed from the church with a blessing by the priest, proceed to the chapel for the Sunday Readings and a short reflection on the Gospel, all on a level that children can understand. They are returned to the church at the beginning of the Creed.

How Can You Help? We are in need of a few more people who would like to spend a short while helping the children understand the Gospel reading for the day. Please consider sitting in on Sunday to see what it’s about and/or email Jane at bulletin@stmary.ws.
