From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

“May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God.” (2 Thessalonians 3:5) During these next few weeks, the Scriptures will turn our attention to the end of days. As we approach Advent, the theme of death and new life will begin to focus us toward the celebration of the new life that is heralded by the Birth of Jesus. As Catholic Christians, death, while not something we seek out, should certainly not be something we fear. Death is a part of life and the death of a believer is the invitation to enter into the very presence of God. For the faithful, death is not an end of life, but the doorway to everlasting life. So we hear in the Gospel that God “is the God not of the dead but of the living.” Jesus reminds His listeners that Moses, at the burning bush, calls God the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. In this reference Moses acknowledges that the faithful of the past are still present. As Jesus says, “for God all are in fact alive.” The journey of our lives here on earth is one by which we attempt to “secure” for ourselves a place in heaven. Remember that the gift of everlasting life is just that…free gift from God. It is not given through anything we can do, but rather already has been given to us by Jesus as a fruit of His death on the Cross. Our response to this freely given gift is to keep ourselves, as St. Paul says, “in the love of God.” So how do we keep ourselves in the love of God? St. Paul gives us some good advice. He says to pray that God may keep you from evil and bigoted people - those people who pull you down and ridicule the faith that has been given and entrusted to you. Our faith in Jesus is a delicate gift that the Evil One wants to subdue in us. So we need to treasure that gift in Jesus and “practice” it often. This means to be strong in who we are as believers...to be able to speak and share the name of Jesus and not to be afraid to let others know who we believe in. We also need to feed that faith. I hate to sound like a broken record...BUT praying and reading of the Scriptures are intricately tied to a strong faith life. Read the Bible each day. Follow the daily readings of the Church that are listed for the week in each bulletin. Let the Word of God, as rich as it is, dwell within you - INdwelling in you, so that the very Words and what they contain may keep you on the track of holiness. Come to the Eucharist (the Mass) with an open heart so that the Holy Spirit may lift you to truly praise and worship Jesus. Sing the songs with a grateful heart. Hear and respond to the prayers so that they become more than just words, but inspirations for your life. Come to the Lord in the Sacrament of Reconciliation so that the peace and freedom of the words of absolution may strengthen you for the journey that God has given you. Pray to the Lord for His grace and presence and, with that, you will have no fear when you are called home to the loving arms of Jesus. While eternal life is a gift, it is one that we need to accept and be willing to live. God has such wonderful plans for you in Jesus - just be open to Him! In Jesus, Fr. Bob

Stewards of God’s Gifts In today’s Second Reading, Paul, Silvanus and Timothy ask for prayers so that they may spread God’s Word even faster among the people. Living Stewardship ~ Pillar of Prayer: As stewards of the Faith, we may not always be able to go out and spread the Word of God to the whole world. However, we do have the ability to pray for those who work tirelessly to build up God’s church throughout the world.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul In today’s Gospel we find that God is a God of the living, and this is indeed the core of our hope. Jesus has risen and is with us, therefore, at no time should we be without hope for the future. When you give the furniture, household items and clothing you no longer use to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, you give hope to your neighbors who have nothing. Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.

Parish Social Ministry DRIVE-THROUGH HOLIDAY FOOD DROP SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 13TH 2:00 - 6:00 PM MONDAY, NOVEMBER 14TH 6:00 -8:30 PM in the parking lot behind the church God’s people of all ages are suffering in poverty right here in our neighborhood. They need food assistance all through the year but especially during the holiday season. The Parish Social Ministry office is hosting a “drivethrough holiday food drop” with the goal of collecting the freshest possible food items to allow our neighbors suffering in poverty to enjoy a true feast with their families on Thanksgiving. We will be hosting this drive-through collection on Sunday, November 13th from 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM and on Monday, November 14th from 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM. This drive through collection will take place in the parking lot behind the church. (You may also drop the items by our office on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM the weeks of November 7th and 14th.)

The items we are collecting for this drive are:

Boxes or Bags of Stuffing Mix Cans of Carrots, Corn, Beans, Cranberry Sauce Cans of Turkey Gravy 3-8 Pound Bags of Potatoes Quarts of Milk (no gallons)

Please consider donating to this special meal if you can. Unfortunately, for these families this holiday meal is only that - a one day meal. While we hope it will be very enjoyable for them, they still need food assistance throughout the rest of the month and into next year. The St. Mary’s community does a wonderful job of supporting these families, but we are asking for a little extra at this difficult time. If you are able to provide grocery store gift cards to the parish social ministry office, they would be put to good use providing much needed food to these families during the holidays and into next year. In addition to grocery store gift cards, we will be providing non-perishable food items to all our families throughout the year. Please consider donating any non-perishable food you can. We are always in need and nothing goes to waste. Thank you in advance for your continued generosity and may God bless you and your family over this holiday season and in 2023. Leftover candy from Trick or Treating? Consider donating it to St. Mary’s Parish Social Ministry for our food pantry. Thank you!

Religious Education One of the earliest hymns I learned was the beautifully written “Jesus Loves Me” penned by the Warner sisters. The words “as He loves me, He will stay, close beside me all the way…” inspired a heart of trust in God. I still sing the old hymn as a beautiful way to remember how much God loves us. At the 9:00 AM Mass last Sunday, the children made visible their love for God. Dressed in creative clothing, they brought the presence of the blessed saints into the liturgy. Through their smiles, we see how God dwells in the hearts of his beloved little ones. Thank you to their parents for sharing their children as “saints” with us. Blessings, Mrs. Granieri

Jesus Loves Me, This I Know (excerpt)

Jesus loves me, this I know, as he loved so long ago, taking children on his knee, saying, “Let them Come to Me.” Psalter Hymnal, 1987

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Sundays at the 9:00 AM Mass After the Opening Prayer, children will be dismissed from the church with a blessing by the priest, proceed to the chapel for the Sunday Readings and a short reflection on the Gospel, all on a level that children can understand. They are returned to the church at the beginning of the Creed. We are in need of a few more people who would like to spend a short while helping the children understand the Gospel reading for the day. Please consider sitting in on Sunday to see what it’s about and/or email Jane at bulletin@stmary.ws.

Don Bosco Squires Circle #548 is Recruiting New Members WHO WE ARE The Columbian Squires is an international fraternity of approximately 25,000 Catholic young men, ages 10 to 18, in over 1,500 circles worldwide. Circles exist, or have existed, throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Panama, Cuba, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Guam, and on U.S. military bases abroad. BECOME A SQUIRE The Squires is designed to develop young men as leaders who understand their Catholic religion, who have a strong commitment to the Church and who are ready, willing and capable of patterning their lives after the Youth Christ. A Squires circle must be sponsored by a council or assembly, but is run by and for young men, under the guidance of several Knights of Columbus from our Fr. William A. Daly #2122 Council, who serve as counselors. Squires are to be leaders, thus, to the degree they are able, they are given the opportunity to lead, by running their own meetings, investing their own members, setting their circle’s agenda and implementing their program of activities. Squires have fun. They meet new friends; they travel, play sports and socialize. Squires are serious-minded, too. Squires are involved in promoting vocations, marching in defense of unborn life, feeding the hungry, clothing the poor, supporting Special Olympics and promoting Catholic education, among countless other activities. Thus, the Squires circle is an athletic team, a youth group, a social club, a cultural and civic improvement association, a management training course, a civil rights organization and a spiritual development program all rolled into one. JOIN US We have a Squires Recruitment Committee in action, which is actively looking for new members. For information, please contact Thomas Mayerhauser at 516852-0812 or tjm51463@gmail.com.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament What Is the Eucharist? The word eucharist (pronounced YOO-kuh-rist) comes from the Greek word eucharistia, meaning thanksgiving. The Catholic Church describes the Eucharist as “the source and summit of the Christian life.” Pope Paul VI, in his 1965 encyclical Mysterium Fidei, wrote: “The Mystery of Faith, that is, the ineffable gift of the Eucharist that the Catholic Church received from Christ, her Spouse, as a pledge of His immense love, is something that she has always devoutly guarded as her most precious treasure.”

In more practical terms, the Eucharist is the Body and Blood of Christ. In addition to being the source and summit of Christian life, it is also the center of the Catholic Mass in the Liturgy of the Eucharist (which follows the Liturgy of the Word–readings, Gospel, homily and intercessions). “Communion” or “Holy Communion” are often used synonymously with “Eucharist.” Holy Communion sometimes refers to the entire action of receiving the sacrament, while “Eucharist” is normally reserved for the sacrament itself. The USCCB itself makes reference both to receiving Communion and distributing Communion. In either case, it’s critical to grasp the concept of Real Presence.

Real Presence – The Actual Body and Blood of Jesus Catholics believe that the Eucharist is the actual Body and Blood of Jesus. Not a symbol or a ritual to remind us of Jesus’s sacrifice. His genuine, true Body and Blood. How could that possibly be? During Mass, the priest consecrates bread and wine. The bread is usually round “hosts,” or wafers consisting of just flour and water. Liturgies must use wine from grapes. The prayers that a priest offers during consecration transform the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Jesus. This occurs by the power of the Holy Spirit through a process called transubstantiation. In transubstantiation, the substance of the bread and wine is transformed into the Body and Blood of Jesus. The accidents, or appearance, of the bread and wine retain their familiar hallmarks–the host still looks like host and not flesh; the wine still smells and tastes like wine. But it is no longer bread and wine, despite its appearance.

The Farrell Boy Foundation Mark Cunningham, a lifelong friend of the Farrell Family, is running the New York City Marathon this Sunday to raise funds for the Farrell Boy Foundation. Please support Mark’s journey in honor of brothers James and Michael Farrell, two amazing young men whose lives were taken from us too soon. The Farrell Boy Foundation supports scholarships in the boys’ names. Funds collected by the Church starting last year helped establish The Farrell Boy Foundation. The Foundation is a New York State Registered Charity recognized as a Section 501(c)(3) organization; contributions and donations made to the Foundation should be deductible as charitable donations to the extent allowed under the law.
