From the Pastor’s Desk

“Will not God secure the rights of His chosen who cry to Him?” (Luke 18:6)

Widows in the Bible are usually described as poor and defenseless and are frequently mentioned with orphans because they too lack voice and resources. They are usually perceived as helpless and Scripture often uses the widow and the orphan as examples of the weakest and the ones who need God’s and OUR compassion. But this widow breaks the stereotype; she is no shrinking violet, no mute victim. She stands up boldly against the power structure and insists on justice. Why shouldn’t she? She must have known that the God of her people stood with her and empowered her to speak. She is an example for those of us gathered at worship today. We are called to be the voice of our compassionate God. We can often feel that in difficult moments God is far away from us and maybe not answering our prayers...a normal reaction in times of stress. Yet the widow is persistent and finally her prayers are answered. Patience, hope, and trust are revealed as the modes to embrace. To have patience that all will be answered in God’s time. Hope, that our voices are not going unheard by God, and trust that He will give what is truly best for us. The Psalmist today has a beautiful line of hope and direction for us:

“I lift up my eyes to the mountains; whence shall my help come?

My help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”

The God we worship as Lord and Father knows our needs. He hears our cries that we make to him. The persistence of the widow is not only a reminder to “keep at” our petitions, BUT, more importantly, to LOOK to see the hand of God guiding us.

One difficutly we may experience in not sensing God’s answer to our prayers is that we look for the response to be exactly as we have presented it. God may have other plans for us. While that may be difficult to accept, the more we fight the reality, the deeper our sense of abandonment may envelop us. While there are certainly painful moments that “seem to be God’s actions” we have to remember what St. Paul tells us today in his Second Letter to Timothy: “Remain faithful to what you have learned and believed.” God gives us every good thing. God doesn’t punish or inflict pain. Rather He teaches and challenges us to find His hand which comforts in the times of trial and heals in the times of hurt. So, yes, storm heaven with your prayers, but then sit back and wait on the Lord to answer in His way and His time. While it may not always be what we exctly asked for…TRUST in God’s mercy, care, and concern for you.

October is Respect Life month and the Gospel reminds us to stand firm in a proclamation for life - all life: unborn life, the life of the terminally ill, the life of the physically and mentally challenged, the life of the elderly and yes, even the life of a murderer on death row. Our challenge is always to embrace each human life as beloved of God. That can truly be a challenge when the acts of any person are so horrific, but doesn’t Scripture remind us that God’s ways are not our ways? Something to ponder and pray about.

Next Saturday is our parish Harvest Festival. I am so happy to be able to return this wonderful family event after the COVID restrictions. I am so grateful to Kiera Walsh from our Alumni Office for the wonderful work she and the Committee have offered that will make a fun-filled day for all. Please consider a sponsorship or underwriting.

October is also the month of the Rosary. Use this powerful prayer form to bring you closer to Jesus through the intercession of Our Most Blessed Lady.

In Jesus and Mary, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, Fr. Bob

Respect Life Ministry

Mom & Baby Shower a Success!

Birthright of Nassau-Suffolk is the grateful beneficiary of the many wonderful shower gifts presented by the generous parishioners of St. Mary’s. A full carload of goods included hand-made baby blankets, diapers, clothing, toiletries for moms, gift cards, and everything in between, plus a generous donation from St. Mary’s Rosary Society. A very special gift was a hand-made Christening gown that had been worn by 32 babies in one extended family in Ireland! The donor was pleased to pass it on to a mom and baby in need.

We are called to stand with moms in need is the Respect Life theme for 20222023, and the St. Mary’s Parish family really stepped up and took action.

St. Mary’s Respect Life Ministry encourages you to share in our pro-life efforts — your help is needed locally now more than ever!

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

We invite new members to join us at our next meetings: Tuesday, November 1st and Tuesday, December 13th at 7:00 PM in the Marian Room.

In the Gospel today Jesus tells his disciples to pray always without becoming weary., indeed our prayer must always be an expression of our love for God, our family, our world, and especially for the suffering poor. As you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box, please say a special prayer for the poor who have no one to pray for them.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email

Let the little children come to me... (Matthew 19:14)

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Sundays at the 9:00 AM Mass

After the Opening Prayer, children will be dismissed from the church with a blessing by the priest, proceed to the chapel for the Sunday Readings and a short reflection on the Gospel, all on a level that children can understand. They are returned to the church at the beginning of the Creed.

We are in need of a few more people who would like to spend a short while helping the children understand the Gospel reading for the day. Please consider sitting in on Sunday to see what it’s about and/or email Jane at bulletin@stmary.ws.

Next Altar Server Training

Monday, October 17th, at 5:00 PM in the Church

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

More Prayers for Adoration

Mighty Warrior, I thank You for this special period. We gather with hearts of adoration. We continually devote ourselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, and to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Lord, we devote ourselves to the partaking of Your body and of Your blood as the Scriptures encourage us to. We partake in this so that we appreciate the fact that we have life in You, only by Your selfless sacrifice, Amen. (Acts 2:42)

Holy God, I pray that day by day we continue with one mind in the church, and break bread from house to house. Let the Eucharist be an occasion that unites us as we reflect on the sacrifice that You made for us. Let us come together with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising You for all that You have done for us. We thank You for loving us so much that You gave Your only Son for us, Amen. (Acts 2:46-47)

Awesome God, the cup of blessing that we bless at the Lord’s Supper is a sharing in the blood of Christ. The bread that we break is a sharing of the body of Christ. Since there is one bread, we believers who are many, are united into one body, for we all partake of the one bread which represents the body of Christ. We thank You for Your body and we thank You for Your blood that unites us, Amen. (1 Corinthians 10:16-17)
