From the Pastor’s Desk

The Apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” (Luke 17:5)

The Disciples ask Jesus for a deeper experience of faith in today’s Gospel. What a great desire the disciples exhibited for wanting to deepen their experience of faith! How many of us have prayed for or desired the same thing? Our journey as followers of Jesus should always be characterized by that deepening of faith. One of the problems people experience during a crisis of faith is that their belief system and relationship with Jesus might not have changed since childhood. If, as adults, the answers of faith have not changed since the days of our youth, we know those answers can never sustain us with the more difficult and complex journey adulthood entails.

So how do we increase our faith in Jesus? The answer, of course, is not easy and certainly entails many and varied paths. But there is a common basis by which we can begin the process. St. Paul reminds his listeners to “fan the gift (of the Holy Spirit) that God gave you.” It is through the power of the Holy Spirit that God endows us with the ability to know and love Jesus. St. Paul goes on to say that the gift of the Holy Spirit is “not timidity, but the Spirit of power.” Power, wow, what does that mean? Well, in one sense it is not being afraid to profess who we are as Christians. If faith in Jesus is perceived as a private matter between the individual and God, then how can it ever be a force that channels your life? And if it is not channeling your life, how can it be anything more than a surface level relationship? This is not always easy to accept and certainly something that is hard to live out. We live in a culture that teaches us that faith should never be brought into the public sector. This is the antithesis of the Gospel message. Our faith is not supposed to be at odds with the secular world, BUT it certainly should be influencing the world. If faith is not changing us, then how can we make an impact in our world?

If we are able to bear witness to the truth of Jesus, if we are not ashamed of whom we are, then that proclamation makes it a more of a truth about us. If it is a truth about us, then it stands to reason that faith will and must increase within us. The more we proclaim Jesus as Lord in our private and public life, the MORE Jesus WILL BE the Lord of our life.

Our Old Testament reading form Habakkuk gives us some good advice about the desire to deepen the faith... PATIENCE, “if it comes slowly, wait for it, it will come.” Once we have made the decision to truly live by a proclamation of faith, then there is, of course, the many “tweaks” that Jesus offers us through Sacred Scripture. These are meant to smooth out the rough edges and make us more pleasing to God. So meditate on the Word of God each day and hear the encouragement of Jesus as He blesses us on the journey. To be truly serious about deepening faith, we know we have to be willing to work at it. To give of ourselves in the service of the Gospel will make our faith not just words, but a way of living each day in the power of the Holy Spirit. Don’t be afraid of the Holy Spirit. He is given to us that we may live in the freedom and power of the children of God. And of course...PRAY, PRAY, and PRAY some more! When the road becomes difficult and we may want to lose hope or feel that the journey is not gaining the momentum we wish besides, go back to the words of Habakkuk. I think we also need to hear the last line of the Gospel: “We are merely servants; we have done no more than our duty.” The journey isn’t always easy, BUT it is rewarding. God’s Blessings as you deepen your faith.

The month of October is the month of the Rosary. I encourage you in your journey of faith to turn to our Mother in heaven, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and let her lead you closer to her Son. The Rosary is a wonderful prayer and meditation that can open you to a deeper relationship with Jesus. Our Lady, at her appearance at Fatima, called the three children and each of us to pray the Rosary for peace in the world. Our Lady’s message is never more relevant than it is today. In the name of Our Lady of Fatima, I encourage you to pray the Rosary with your families.

In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Bob

Honoring the Queen of the Most Holy Rosary

Please Join Us as We Pray Our Lady’s Rosary in Song: Donna Cori Gibson’s “Musical Rosary”

This very special presentation was so welcomed by all when it was first presented a few years ago. The Rosary Society decided to bring it back this year!

OCTOBER IS THE MONTH DEDICATED TO THE MOST HOLY ROSARY

“The Rosary contains within itself the healing power of the Most Holy Name of Jesus, invoked with faith and love at the centre of each ‘Hail Mary’.” - Pope Benedict XVI

Friday, October 7th - Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary

The development of the rosary has a long history. First, a practice developed of praying 150 Our Fathers in imitation of the 150 Psalms. Then there was a parallel practice of praying 150 Hail Marys. Soon a mystery of Jesus’ life was attached to each Hail Mary. Though Mary’s giving of the rosary to Saint Dominic is recognized as a legend, the development of this prayer form owes much to the followers of Saint Dominic. One of them, Alan de la Roche, was known as “the apostle of the rosary.” He founded the first Confraternity of the Rosary in the 15th century. In the 16th century, the rosary was developed to its present form—with the 15 mysteries: joyful, sorrowful and glorious. In 2002, Pope John Paul II added the five Mysteries of Light to this devotion. Society of St. Vincent de Paul

In today’s Gospel Jesus tells his disciples, “When you have done all you have been commanded, say: We are unprofitable servants; we have only done what we were obliged to do.” This week, please help the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to bring the love and mercy of Jesus to those who feel left out and abandoned, for indeed we are only doing “what we are obliged to do”.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. Respect Life Ministry

Today is Respect Life Sunday

From Building a Culture of Life in a Post-Roe World, USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities:

[T]he logic of the culture of life recognizes that the pregnant woman and her child are not alone—they are fellow members of our larger human family whose interwoven vulnerability is a summons to all of us, but especially Catholics because of the teaching of Jesus and his proclamation of the Gospel of Life. Indeed, Catholics see in the life of the Holy Family a lesson for all society:

• Mary, who not only said “yes” to life but who accompanied and cared for her child throughout his life;

• Joseph, who met the unexpected challenges and threats to the child with fortitude and compassion; and

• Jesus himself, who came into the world not with power and majesty but with the vulnerability, dependence, and humility of a child.

In a post-Roe world, then, we must shift the paradigm to what Saint Pope John Paul II described as “radical solidarity,” making the good of others our own good, including especially mothers, babies (born and preborn), and families throughout the entire human lifespan. It is a call to friendship and compassion rooted in the truth that we are made to love our neighbor as ourselves.

St. Mary’s Respect Life Ministry encourages you to join us in the following pro-life efforts — your help is needed locally now more than ever!

Mom & Baby Shower - TODAY – unwrapped gifts accepted for moms and babies in need after all weekend Masses;

Stand Up For Life - TODAY - Route 110 in Huntington north of Route 25 (near Walt Whitman Mall), 2:00 to 2:30 PM;

40 Days for Life Campaign — Prayerful, peaceful, loving and compassionate witness at Hempstead Planned Parenthood. (https://www.40daysforlife.com/en/hempstead)

Please consider participating in any and all of the above … and bring friends!

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Act of Reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Most sweet Jesus, whose overflowing charity for men is requited by so much forgetfulness, negligence, and contempt, behold us prostrate before You, eager to repair by a special act of homage the cruel indifference and injuries to which Your loving Heart is everywhere subjected.

Mindful, alas! that we ourselves have had a share in such great indignities, which we now deplore from the depths of our hearts, we humbly ask Your pardon and declare our readiness to atone by voluntary expiation, not only for our own personal offenses, but also for the sins of those who, straying far from the path of salvation, refuse in their obstinate infidelity to follow you, their Shepherd and Leader, or, renouncing the promises of their Baptism, have cast off the sweet yoke of Your law.

We are now resolved to expiate each and every deplorable outrage committed against You; we are determined to make amends for the manifold offenses against Christian modesty in indecent dress and behavior, for all the foul seductions laid to ensnare the feet of the innocent, for the frequent violations of Sundays and holydays, and for the shocking blasphemies uttered against You and Your Saints.

We wish also to make amends for the insults to which Your Vicar on earth and Your priests are subjected, for the profanation, by conscious neglect or terrible acts of sacrilege, of the very Sacrament of Your divine love, and lastly for the public crimes of nations who resist the rights and teaching authority of the Church which You have founded.

Would that we were able to wash away such abominations with our blood.

We now offer, in reparation, for these violations of Your divine honor, the satisfaction You once made to Your Eternal Father on the cross and which You continue to renew daily on our altars; we offer it in union with the acts of atonement of Your Virgin Mother and all the Saints and of the pious faithful on earth; and we sincerely promise to make recompense, as far as we can with the help of Your grace, for all neglect of Your great love and for the sins we and others have committed in the past.

Henceforth, we will live a life of unswerving faith, of purity of conduct, of perfect observance of the precepts of the Gospel and especially that of charity.

We promise to the best of our power to prevent others from offending You and to bring as many as possible to follow You.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction Mondays 3:00 - 5:00 PM

O loving Jesus, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mother, our model in reparation, deign to receive the voluntary offering we make of this act of expiation; and by the crowning gift of perseverance keep us faithful unto death in our duty and the allegiance we owe to You, that we may all one day come to that happy home, where with the Father and the Holy Spirit You live and reign, forever and ever. Amen

Religious Education

God’s Collaborators

St. Mary’s Religious Education Program is in full gear! Classes began on September 29th for both in person and online catechism students. It is a real blessing of grace to offer multiple ways of learning about our Catholic faith to nearly 700 students. Without St. Mary Catechists, we could not have resumed the traditional model of classroom instruction. As God’s collaborators, they dedicate themselves to Christ’s mission, educating students on the Gospel and the life of grace. St. Paul commissioned his entire life to this purpose. He exclaims in a letter to the Galatians, “My little children, of whom I am in labor again, until Christ be formed in you (4:19). St. Mary’s online student community continues to successfully work with us using the remote option.

We look forward to this year of Christian fellowship, and the joy of moving both in person and online student communities closer to know the sweet love of God.

We welcome Catherine Abbatangelo, who joins us as St. Mary’s Religious Education Coordinator.

Vive Jesus! Mrs. Granieri

OCIA and Adult Faith Formation

OCIA Is Here Waiting for You!

This is my body given for

The OCIA (formerly known as RCIA) here at St. Mary’s has no candidates at this time. If you know any persons who are in need of completing their Sacraments of Initiation or coming into the Church or wish to deepen their relationship with God, this could be their opportunity to do so. Encourage them to call Sister Teresa to see how they can begin the process.

In the meantime, the OCIA team has the opportunity to learn more about the Church’s understanding of the process through the webinars that are now in their fifth week. These webinars, approved by the USCCB, are held weekly from now until February and cover every aspect of the workings of the OCIA. It is a national process that has more than two thousand five hundred people registered.

Sister Teresa can be contacted about our OCIA and other Adult Faith Formation programs at 516-627-0385, ext. 1010. Her office hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 10:00AM and 4:00PM and other times by appointment.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Sundays at the 9:00 AM Mass

After the Opening Prayer, children will be dismissed from the church with a blessing by the priest, proceed to the chapel for the Sunday Readings and a short reflection on the Gospel, all on a level that children can understand. They are returned to the church at the beginning of the Creed.

We are in need of a few more people who would like to spend a short while helping the children understand the Gospel reading for the day. Please consider sitting in on Sunday to see what it’s about and/or email Jane at bulletin@stmary.ws.

Let the little children come to me... (Matthew 19:14)

In two thousand years, the Catholic Chur ch has yielded countless saints, artists, mystics, and scholars. But among them are figures that are truly pivotal—men and women who not only shaped the life of the Church but changed the course of civilization. In his series CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players, Bishop Robert Barron draws readers into the life and work of Pivotal Players—from great saints to literary masters—who personally demonstrated the dynamics of the Christian faith in their distinct time and place. These stories capture both the great variety of personalities and vocations in the Catholic Church and the harmonies between them, all oriented to its ultimate purpose: to be salt and light for all the nations
