The Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time | October 30, 2022
Dear Parishioners,
“Let us rejoice in the Lord, as we celebrate the feast day in honor of all the Saints, at whose festival the Angels rejoice and praise the Son of God.” (Introit from the Solemnity of All Saints)
Tuesday, November 1st, is the Solemnity of All Saints. This is a Holy Day of Obligation in the life of the Church. A day all Catholics are obligated to attend Mass. A Holy Day of Obligation, because of the nature of the feast, takes on the same solemnity as the requirement to attend Sunday Mass. Holy Days are made into days of obligation. Each nation chooses the days of saints that are important to the people of that nation. The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is a Holy Day of Obligation in the United States because Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is the Patroness of our country. In Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day, and, in Italy, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, are the feast days of their national patrons and hence are Holy Days of Obligation.
The Solemnity of All Saints is a celebration of all those who have, as St. Paul says, “fought the good fight and received the crown of glory.” In reality, a saint is only someone who now lives with God. It is a day to commemorate all those saints that have their names listed in the official books of the Church, but also all those whose names are not officially recognized. Maybe members of our families who have lived faithfully to Jesus and are now part of the Kingdom. This feast reminds us of all those who have gone before us, and as we hear in the Book of Revelation “have been through the great persecution and have washed their robes white again in the blood of the Lamb.” So on this Solemnity we remember and commemorate all the “unknown” saints of the Church, as I said, all those who live with Jesus in Heaven.
The call to sanctity is the invitation offered to all believers through Baptism. Our journey or pilgrimage on earth is to work for our entrance into heaven. We strive to follow the Gospel of Jesus and live according to His will so that the promise of Eternal Life may be our reward for a faith-filled and holy life. The Gospel reading for All Saints’ Day, the Beatitudes, is a good “road map” if you are willing to live out that journey. Blessed are the meek, the peacemakers, those who hunger for justice, the merciful, the pure in heart...they are the face of God.
The Solemnity of All Saints is also a good reminder for us. Have we spent our time and energy seeking out the Kingdom here so that we may be part of that Kingdom in the world to come? It’s never too late to become a saint. You can begin today, go to confession, be freed from the sins of the past. Let nothing hold you back... and today hear the voice of Jesus and come follow Him in a new and deeper way. It really isn’t that difficult with the power of the Holy Spirit. And you never know... one day we may celebrate your feast day.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus asks Zacchaeus, a sinner, if He can come to his house to stay. This fills Zacchaeus with such joy that he not only will leave behind his sinful ways, BUT ALSO now act in abundant generosity to anyone who he has hurt and will share with the needy. Jesus tells him that salvation has come to his house. In a very real way, this sinner has joined the ranks of the saints. All it took from Jesus was a word of hope and encouragement. What a wonderful reminder for our own lives. The Scriptures reveal to us the love and hope that Jesus offers. This has the ability to change hearts. The invitation is there for us to embrace that and move from our own sins. It should and must also remind us that the hope we offer to others in the name of Jesus can change their hearts, as it did to Zacchaeus. As ones who join the work of the saints, we must be His hope to all we meet. What moments in the day has Jesus offered us to be His hope to someone we meet? Be open to those experiences and be the “saint in our midst” to those who need the encouragement of Jesus.

Our Mass of Remembrance for parishioners who died this past year will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 2nd, at 7:00 PM.
I would like to thank all those who worked to make our Harvest Festival last Saturday such a great parish “Fun-raiser.” It was so nice to see the parish gather again for this wonderful and exciting event after all the restrictions of COVID. A special thank you to Kiera Walsh and the committee who worked so diligently on this event. A special thank you also goes to Mrs. Jennifer De Sena, the Supervisor of the Town of North Hempstead and a daughter of our parish, for visiting the festival and making the stage available to us.
Please join me in welcoming Fr. Kingsley Nwanwa from the Diocese of Okigwe, Nigeria. Fr. Kingsley has been assigned here as a Parochial Vicar by Bishop Barres. We pray his ministry here will be fruitful.

DRIVE-THROUGH HOLIDAY FOOD DROP
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 13TH 2:00 - 6:00 PM
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 14TH 6:00 -8:30 PM in the parking lot behind the church
God’s people of all ages are suffering in poverty right here in our neighborhood. They need food assistance all through the year but especially during the holiday season. The Parish Social Ministry office is hosting a “drivethrough holiday food drop” with the goal of collecting the freshest possible food items to allow our neighbors suffering in poverty to enjoy a true feast with their families on Thanksgiving. We will be hosting this drive-through collection on Sunday, November 13th from 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM and on Monday, November 14th from 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM. This drive through collection will take place in the parking lot behind the church. (You may also drop the items by our office on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM the weeks of November 7th and 14th.)
The items we are collecting for this drive are:
Frozen Turkeys (10-15 lbs.)
Frozen Oven Stuffer Chickens
Frozen Pounds of Butter
Frozen Pies (either homemade and boxed or bought frozen)
Frozen Crescent Rolls or Biscuits
Boxes or Bags of Stuffing Mix Cans of Carrots, Corn, Beans, Cranberry Sauce Cans of Turkey Gravy 3-8 Pound Bags of Potatoes Quarts of Milk (no gallons)
Please consider donating to this special meal if you can.
Unfortunately, for these families this holiday meal is only that - a one day meal. While we hope it will be very enjoyable for them, they still need food assistance throughout the rest of the month and into next year. The St. Mary’s community does a wonderful job of supporting these families, but we are asking for a little extra at this difficult time. If you are able to provide grocery store gift cards to the parish social ministry office, they would be put to good use providing much needed food to these families during the holidays and into next year. In addition to grocery store gift cards, we will be providing non-perishable food items to all our families throughout the year. Please consider donating any non-perishable food you can. We are always in need and nothing goes to waste. Thank you in advance for your continued generosity and may God bless you and your family over this holiday season and in 2023.
Leftover candy from Trick or Treating? Consider donating it to St. Mary’s Parish Social Ministry for our food pantry. Thank you!
We are running low now and need to restock the following items (see below). Please donate if you find you are able. God bless you and your families.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul
New members are always welcome!
We invite you to explore the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Mary’s Church. There are no special qualifications to join, other than the desire to join with others in helping Neighbors in need. As a group, we meet monthly. Come decide for yourself if God is calling you to this special Ministry. Meetings are in the Marian Room.
In the Gospel today, Zacchaeus accepts our Lord joyfully; and the sign of his acceptance is his open house and his resolution to give half of his goods to the poor. Through your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul you also show your acceptance of our Lord by joyfully sharing your goods with your neighbor who is hungry, hopeless, alone and frightened.
Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.

Those Who Serve”
The Triennial National Collection for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS) is scheduled for the weekend of November 5-6, 2022. Unlike a territorial diocese, the AMS has no parishes and must depend on the support of the Catholic faithful throughout the United States for its pastoral care and services to 1.8 million Catholics serving in our U.S. Armed Forces and federal installations worldwide. The nation’s largest archdiocese, AMS spans the globe and its priests go wherever American servicemen and women are stationed, bringing them the sacraments, spiritual support and the Good News of eternal salvation through Jesus Christ. Thank you for your generosity.
THE NEXT SVDP MEETING IS TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 1st at 7:00 PM.

St. Mary’s Harvest Festival Returns with Autumn Splendor
This past Saturday, Fr. Bob joyfully welcomed parishioners, school community members, neighbors, alums, and friends of the Church of Saint Mary to campus for the highly anticipated return of the Harvest Festival. The weather was spectacular as hundreds of guests of all ages flocked to Denihan Field from 12:008:00 PM and attended the 5:00 PM Vigil Mass. The autumnal celebration included baked goods, mums, pumpkins, raffles, spirit wear, and pies: the ever-popular dunk tank, crafts, games, BINGO, and inflatable activities. Highlights were the food trucks with delicious menu offerings, live music performed by local band favorite, Porch Light, and our complimentary Wine & Beer Garden for those 21+ provided by Willistons’. (The band featured two alumni of the Schools of St. Mary and two High School alums who own the nearby restaurant).
We are grateful to all those who joined us in person for the Harvest Festival, our generous underwriters and sponsors, and those who donated items or provided services to support our fundraiser. Town of North Hempstead Supervisor and daughter of the parish, Jennifer DeSena, assisted with providing the Town’s show mobile for the day. Our Pastor, Fr. Bob, noted, “we are truly blessed by the show of support from those who donated their time, talent, and treasure to help ensure the success of the festival and the future of our ministries. The friendships formed on this great day for St. Mary’s are a testament to our entire community.”
Many thanks to Mrs. Kiera Walsh, our director of alumni and parent relations, who, along with a committee, student volunteers, and many staff members of the parish and schools, helped bring the event to life after a hiatus due to the pandemic. Their efforts to make the event one to remember were indeed evident through the smiles seen on guests’ faces and the record attendance of this year’s Harvest Festival.
If you missed the event and wish to donate, our online portal will remain open until November 1, 2022. Please visit the “GIVE” tab on our website https://saintmarysmanhasset.org or scan the QR Code.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
The Four Prayers You Should Pray Every Day
It can be hard to pray. So often we start with good intentions, but we get bored or distracted. In a world that is all about fast-paced instant gratification, a consistent prayer life seems almost unattainable. The struggle is real. But it’s worth the fight. As Christians, we believe that we should always be praying! It’s the most effective way to connect with God and receive His guidance and protection. It’s one of the main ways we stay to stay encouraged and full of hope as we go through this crazy journey called life.
Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction Mondays
3:00 - 5:00 PM
And prayer is not something you have to do while kneeling. It’s something you do when you’re alone—when you’re working on your laptop or writing an email or cleaning the house or getting ready for work. So, if you’re just getting started with your prayer life, or if you’ve been praying for a long time but things feel stale, maybe this tool will help you. It’s called the A.C.T.S. model for prayer. It provides an outline for your prayers and can help if you feel stuck or uninspired.
Adoration - Adoration of God is where you simply express your love for Him. It’s the place where you reach out and just say, “God, You’re amazing. I’m amazed by you.” Adoration is about who God is, not what He does. We adore God for all of His attributes.
Confession - After you’ve spent time acknowledging who God is, it’s time to acknowledge who we are: fallen. Confession is where we take an honest look at our own behavior, thoughts, motivations, and we admit we’ve missed the mark. -Confession isn’t for God’s benefit– God already knows all the stuff we’ll talk about. This isn’t to inform Him, it’s to help us take a posture of humility and authenticity. Through confession, we develop into people who can say sorry, who can receive criticism with grace, and who can admit fault but then move on toward greater intimacy. -Confession isn’t to pile on shame- Jesus died to set us free from shame and guilt. Confession isn’t about swimming in a sea of regret. It’s a time to seek reconciliation with the father and others, to admit fault, and ask for forgiveness. Confession isn’t to be taken lightly– Never forget that the only reason forgiveness is even possible is because of what Jesus did at Calvary. He bought that at a very steep price. So, when we confess our sin, we should always be mindful of just how great a price was paid so we even have the opportunity to confess and find forgiveness.
Thanksgiving - If adoration praises God for who He is, thanksgiving thanks God for what He’s done. This is where we take some time to acknowledge all the gifts He’s given to us…the air in our lungs, the clothes on our back, our job, family, friends. The Bible says, “Every good and perfect gift is from above.” (James 1:17). Whatever blessings we have received are all from the hand of God. He is our source.
Supplication - And finally, we present our requests to God. So many times our prayers begin and end with our requests…in effect, we treat God like a big Santa Claus in the sky. However, with this model for prayer, we end with supplication, only after we’ve worshiped, confessed, and offered thanks. Supplication can be requests for others and requests for our own needs. Bring it all to Him.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Sundays at the 9:00 AM Mass
After the Opening Prayer, children will be dismissed from the church with a blessing by the priest, proceed to the chapel for the Sunday Readings and a short reflection on the Gospel, all on a level that children can understand. They are returned to the church at the beginning of the Creed.
We are in need of a few more people who would like to spend a short while helping the children understand the Gospel reading for the day. Please consider sitting in on Sunday to see what it’s about and/or email Jane at bulletin@stmary.ws.
