From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

“Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!” (Luke 17:13)

Have you ever noticed that in times of shared tragedy and joy that people come together? It seems that those moments have the ability to remove any barriers or differences that seem to play such a role in our daily lives. In the Gospel of St. Luke, we have ten lepers traveling together. They are from different traditions (Jews and a Samaritan). In normal conditions, they would have been forbidden to interact. There existed a deep animosity between these two religious groups. But here they are traveling together, going where, we do not know. They were probably simply wandering, seeking out food and the generosity of people; looking for hope in a world that for them seemed so bereft of hope. Their shared ostracization from their communities bound them together. They encounter Jesus and know He has the power to help them and they cry out for mercy. Maybe they heard Him preach, or heard others speaking of Him. When they encounter Jesus, something stirs within them and they cry out to Him. Jesus is moved with compassion and tells them to show themselves to the priests. If the priests can see them healed, they can be declared clean. With those words, they can return to their families and communities. What hope they must have felt in the presence of Jesus!

Aren’t there times we feel isolated from others or even from God? Maybe in those moments we cry out in the silence of our hearts for God to “have pity on us.” Hopefully, we have felt the presence of God speaking to our hearts, or even through the voice of the prophets among us. We should always call out to Jesus; He does hear us and, as St. Paul tells us, “His sayings are trustworthy.” Yet there are times we also have to wait upon the Lord for that healing power. Jesus is present and wants to show us His mercy. We must never stop the journey of seeking Him. Our wandering should not be aimless, but focused on the power of the Holy Spirit who wants to deepen our faith.

There is another scenario, which is even sadder. Some may feel they are too unworthy to come and beg the mercy of God. In that feeling of unworthiness, they wander seeking out answers. We know that aimless wandering leads nowhere. It is in Jesus that we can find our hope and comfort, if we are only willing to let the walls down. Like the lepers in today’s Gospel, we must be able to fall at the feet of Jesus where we can truly seek His healing love. When we fall to our knees, we let our pride collapse. Jesus can then lift us up to walk again in the dignity that all people share as the children of God. So we need to be the ones who assure those without hope, who feel unworthy, or have lost the faith that God’s love in Jesus goes beyond what we, or they, can ever imagine. We are loved. Let us bring that love and hope to those who need it most. Be joyful bearers of the GOOD NEWS.

The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary. I encourage you and your families to pray together this powerful prayer form. What a wonderful journey it can be, to be led to Jesus through the powerful intercession of His Mother!

In Jesus and Mary, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, Fr. Bob

Stewards of God’s Gifts

In today’s Gospel, Jesus heals ten lepers—however, only one of them returns to give thanks.

Living Stewardship ~ Pillar of Formation: Today’s Gospel teaches us to live with an “attitude of gratitude.” God has given us so many blessings, sometimes we forget to turn back and thank Him. This week in your daily prayers, remember to thank God for all He has done for you.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

We invite new members to join us at our next meetings: Tuesday, November 1st and Tuesday, December 13th at 7:00 PM in the Marian Room.

In today’s Gospel we hear that only one of those healed returned to glorify God and to give thanks to God. It is true, that when we have a grateful heart we know that everything is a gift from God. To give thanks for all that God has given to you, have you considered answering the call to help serve the poor by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul?

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Sundays at the 9:00 AM Mass

After the Opening Prayer, children will be dismissed from the church with a blessing by the priest, proceed to the chapel for the Sunday Readings and a short reflection on the Gospel, all on a level that children can understand. They are returned to the church at the beginning of the Creed. We are in need of a few more people who would like to spend a short while helping the children understand the Gospel reading for the day. Please consider sitting in on Sunday to see what it’s about and/or email Jane at bulletin@stmary.ws.

Diocesan Priest, Oblate of the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart

Montforte Irpino: 11 January 1899 - Rome: 2 May 1934

O Most Holy Trinity, Who deigned to raise Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo to the priesthood, and endowed him with precious gifts, especially that of a burning love for suffering and immolation, we humbly beseech You, if it be Your will, that he may be glorified on earth, and that we may obtain through his intercession the particular grace which we ask for with living faith. Amen.

OCIA and Adult Faith Formation

OCIA Is Here Waiting for You!

The webinars sponsored by the USCCB for the leaders of the OCIA are interesting and informative. They inform us that it is the business of the entire parish to welcome the new candidates and catechumens and help them to feel welcome as new parishioners. Parishioners can also help by encouraging people they knowwho may be interested in joining the Catholic Faith or making their Confirmation etc. to start now. They can be introduced to the various ministries the Congregation serves and invited to participate in some of our works. Theeducation piece is important but not the only place for them to learn how it is to be Catholic. We are all in this together.

Sister Teresa can be contacted about our OCIA and other Adult Faith Formation programs at 516-627-0385, ext. 1010. Her office hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 10:00AM and 4:00PM and other times by appointment.
