The circumstances of the writing of Paul’s Letter to Philemon were unusual. Onesimus, a name which means USEFUL, was a slave of Philemon of Colossae (Col. 4:9), who escaped from his master after causing damage to Philemon’s property (v.18). He reached Paul who was in prison at the time, and Paul converted him to Christ and finally sent him back to Philemon to forgive him with a promise to pay for any damages that he had caused (vv.1619). Paul, in bringing Onesimus back to Philemon, teaches us the Christian principles of love, justice and solidarity. How does the message of Philemon apply to us in today’s modern world? What is its relevance to us, especially where slavery, at least in the more developed countries, like ours, is a thing of the past?

God Bless, Fr Charles

Thirdly, we may be like Saint Paul. He knew and loved both Onesimus and Philemon. And he used his friendship and authority to bring peace between them. Blessed are the peacemakers, says the Lord, for they will be called children of God (Matthew 5:9). Maybe the time has come to fulfill God’s calling to be instruments of peace. Take the initiative, be Saint Paul of our time and be a peacemaker this week. Jesus Christ came to heal the divisions that sin causes in our world- divisions between us and God, and between our very selves- one another.

Saint Paul usually makes appeals for specific future behavior on the part of his addressees. He discloses here that his language of appeal is a loving expedient for his authority to command (vv. 8-22). His relationship with Philemon thus becomes a model for Philemon in his relationship with Onesimus. Everyone is called to make sacrifices for the kingdom, and even very costly ones. For it is these same renunciations that the Church was born. It is these same ones which safeguard her unity. Today and throughout this week, as we renew our commitment to be followers of Christ, let us ask Him to grant us the grace to continue His healing and reconciliation work.

A Reflection by Father Charles

The Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time | September 11, 2022

Secondly, we may be like Onesimus. He had run away from his problems which was not a solution to them. And now Christ was giving him the grace to face up to it. There may be something in our lives that we have run away from; be it a responsibility, a failure, a painful tragedy and the like. Perhaps the time has come to face up to it and let the grace of God dispel the shadow it has been casting on our lives. When we feel stuck and seem to be going nowhere; it may actually be a sign for us to prepare for something new. What is OPPORTUNITY, and when does it knock? It never knocks. You are the OPPORTUNITY and must knock on the door leading to your destiny. Never doubt that God given you grace and talent and your potentiality to strive and to achieve greater heights.

J

Building the Bridge Through Forgiveness and Reconciliation

It applies to us in three possible ways. First, we may be like Philemon. There may be someone in our life who has wronged us and created a breach in our relationship. And Christ may be asking us, just as Saint Paul was asking Philemon, to welcome that person back as a brother or a sister. Many scholars even think that Philemon freed Onesimus as soon as he returned. There is actually evidence indicating that Onesimus may have become the Bishop of Ephesus, a key city in early Christianity, according to the writings of Saint Ignatius of Antioch, in the second century. Onesimus was once USELESS, but is now USEFUL to both Philemon and Saint Paul (v.11) and, by extension, to the world. It could be that God has great plans for someone who we need to accept back, to forgive, and to set free. Not recounting his past deeds but what he has become presently.

Today, in very unfamiliar way, I would like us to reflect on Paul’s letter to Philemon, which was the Second Reading last Sunday. Written to an individual, it is the shortest of the Pauline letters. It is right and fitting because last Sunday’s Opening Prayer, The Collect, defines the status of every Christian. It reads, “O God, by whom we are redeemed and receive adoption, look graciously upon your beloved sons and daughters, that those who believe in Christ may receive true freedom and an everlasting inheritance.”

deepest thanks for your prayers and continued financial support for our senior priests residing at the St. Pius X Enriched Living Facility. When a diocesan priest is ordained, he promises to shepherd God’s people through happy and difficult times. Through the years, the Diocese of Rockville Centre has been blessed with many shepherds who have done just this and selflessly guided the faithful of Long Island. Even in retirement, our priests continue to shepherd the flock and make a profound impact on the lives of Catholics of all ages. They celebrate Mass in our parishes, visit the sick and homebound, and bring God’s Word to those in prison.

After a lifetime of sacrifice and service, no priest should face retirement without the care and support they may need with daily living. Happily, our St. Pius X facility provides a life-enriching experience for the men who live there, enabling our dedicated shepherds to live or recuperate in an environment that gives them the extra care and attention that they need. At the same time, St. Pius X allows them to serve as active, fully engaged members of the community.

I encourage you to give prayerful consideration of a gift in support of our retired priests living at St. Pius X Enriched Living Facility. Why does our Church call attention to Our Blessed Mother’s sufferings? To be reminded of the pain and sadness Mary suffered in her earthly life? Yes, and there is an explanation. The story of Mary’s sorrows is the story of her love. It is her story of her faith; her trust in and obedience to God’s perfect will; her perseverance, patience, and humility. Much the same as the Church “commemorates” Jesus’ passion and death on Good Friday, a reflection on Our Lady’s sufferings will draw us nearer to our own salvation. The seven sorrows of Mary are: the presentation of Jesus in the Temple, the flight into Egypt, Jesus being lost in Jerusalem, the meeting of Mary and Jesus on the way to Calvary, the crucifixion, the taking down of Jesus’ body from the cross, and His burial. This day offers us an opportunity to ask Mary, in a special way, to help us through our own trials.

The Rosary Society fosters devotion to Mary through prayer and good works for causes that would be dear to her heart

regulation-sized indoor basketball courts and a turf field, the campers could enjoy time outdoors and indoors to cool off while having a terrific experience. Campers learned team-building skills, ran drills, and honed their athletic abilities, while others discovered their capabilities for the first time. Whether synchronizing dance steps, scoring a goal, or making a lay-up in their sessions, campers were met with enthusiasm each day by the outgoing coaches in the safe, nurturing environment St. Mary’s provides to their families. The high energy on campus this summer was evident as the smiling faces of parents and children alike told the story of the program’s success. “Last year, our program reached new heights in registration numbers, and this year was no different,” noted Gerard Buckley. “As principal, I am delighted to witness the summer camps continue to grow as more families choose to take advantage of our terrific camp offerings close to home.”

Camp Director Colleen Curran said, “The one thing that stood out about the kids at camp was how passionate they were about their sport. Their faces really showed how much they loved playing!” New to leading the Summer Sports Camps this year, she enjoyed meeting campers not only from St. Mary’s but from surrounding schools and neighborhoods, which was an excellent indication of the school’s commitment to serving students beyond the classrooms during the regular academic year. Ms. Curran is also a member of the St. Mary’s High School faculty and loves teaching mathematics. We’re excited to learn more about her vision and additional offerings for next year’s program. Stay tuned for details forthcoming this winter.

Is there a neighbor or friend of yours who is in temporary need because of a loss of a job or an illness? Please leave a message for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul…we want to help!

RICA is now OCIA

Sister Teresa can be contacted about our OCIA and other Adult Faith Formation programs at 516-627-0385, ext. 1010. Her office hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 10:00AM and 4:00PM and other times by

Registration Is Now Open for St. Mary Religious Education Program (2022-2023)

To join our growing school, please contact the Religious Education Office at 516-627-4028 ext. 1127.

We are in need of Catechists and program volunteers with a devoted knowledge of Scripture and doctrinal teachings of the Catholic Church. Please do consider serving the parish as a Catechist, assistant or hall/traffic monitor.

Leaders and Catechists are being invited to watch several webinars on a weekly basis concerning the Implementation of the process with the candidates and catechumens. The first webinar aired last Wednesday. More than 900 people watched the live airing. Many others were expected to watch the taped version later. Anyone interested in participating in the process should get in touch with Sr. Teresa as soon as possible. The process prepares adults in need of Baptism, Confirmation and/or Holy Eucharist as each one’s needs require. It is also the preparation for adults wishing to become Catholic.

The RCIA is undergoing an update in its language and function on a national level. The most noticeable thing is its name change! At this point in time it is referred to as the OCIA meaning “Order of Christian Initiation of Adults” rather than RCIA or “RITE of Christian Initiation of Adults.”

RCIA and Adult Faith Formation

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

Dear Families,

It is so wonderful to invite you to now register your children for the St. Mary Religious Education Program (2022-2023). We are resuming in person catechesis as well as continuing to offer the optional model of online lessons. To enroll, visit the Religious Education page on the St. Mary parish website. Starting in September 2022, classes for grades 1-8 will be held on Sunday (9:15 – 10:15 AM), on Monday for grades 6-8 (7:00 – 8:00 PM), and on Tuesday for grades 1-5 (4:30 – 5:30 PM).

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.

It is always heartwarming to hear a person share the memory of someone who has made an impact on their life. Frequently, they will talk about a teacher who taught them something that made an impact on how they see the world. In sharing Christ’s Gospel to our young Catholics – this can be you!

Of your mystical supper, O Son of God, receive me today as a communicant; for I will not speak of the Mysteries to your enemies, nor will I give you a kiss as Judas did, but like the thief I now acknowledge you: Jesus, remember me in your Kingdom.

Let the little children come to me... (Matt 19:14)

It is love that has stirred up my littleness To sing praises in the presence of your majesty. Turn me to you, O Lord, that free from fear I may sing to your glory, as best I may!

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Resumes at the 9:00 AM Mass Next Sunday, September 18th

Since you are the Body of Christ and his members, It is your mystery that is placed on the Lord’s table, It is your mystery that you receive. You hear the words: The Body of Christ, And you answer: Amen. Be therefore members of Christ, That your Amen may be true.... If you have received well, You are that which you have receive.

After the Opening Prayer, children will be dismissed from the church with a blessing by the priest, proceed to the chapel for the Sunday Readings and a short reflection on the Gospel, all on a level that children can understand. They are returned to the church at the beginning of the Creed. There is no age limit and no registration required. We need more people to become prayer leaders for Children’s Liturgy of the Word. Materials and training are provided; scheduling is flexible. If interested, please contact Jane Clifford at bulletin@stmary.ws or sit in with us starting next Sunday.

Prayers Before the Holy Eucharist

Excerpt from the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom (ca. 347-407)

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed

Never, when I would draw near you can I forget my nature’s weakness; When I contemplate you in silence It would be too much for me if I could understand. Yet no one blames a baby For making free with those whom he knows; His childishness is not blamed by those who understand. Then do not blame us for making bold with you (for who dare gaze on you?)

On Waiting on God St. Ephrem the Syrian (306-373)

The Body of Christ St. Augustine (354-430)

We come from different places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world.

O Most Holy Trinity, Who deigned to raise Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo to the priesthood, and endowed him with precious gifts, especially that of a burning love for suffering and immolation, we humbly beseech You, if it be Your will, that he may be glorified on earth, and that we may obtain through his intercession the particular grace which we ask for with living faith. Amen.

Our lives, time, efforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism.
