From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
Sometimes simple words can be deep reminders of who we are as Christians. St. Paul reminds his listeners, in our Second Reading, that if we claim the name of Jesus as our own, there are attributes that we are challenged to embrace. As believers, St. Paul calls us to stand up and witness to the truth of Jesus as Lord. Surely we can do that by words, but how much more effective is our witness when it is accompanied by our actions.
St. Paul presents some very practical ways to live in Jesus. How often have we heard that patience and gentleness are required of the Christian? How many unpleasant and volatile situations could be avoided if we approached them not with an arrogance of pride, but with the gentleness of love? Jesus calls us to that gentleness because He is aware that the attitudes we bring to each situation are an invitation to bear witness to the truth. We are reminded in the reading that Jesus bore witness to the truth of His life in the presence of Pilate. A witness that brought Him to the Cross. Jesus did not back down or even take the easy road. He knew that standing for the truth would lead Him to death, yet He remained faithful. While we may never have to die for our faith in Jesus, we are certainly challenged to LIVE that truth. Living the faith may mean biting our tongues when we want to repay anger with anger or to strike those who have hurt us. The words of Scripture call us to something deeper. We live as a witness not just by our words, but by the way we treat others, especially those who don’t wish for the best for us.
It is in those moments that we can do the most profound teaching and preaching. Remember others will look to us to define what a Christian is. So we never know when our actions can lead someone closer to Jesus or even push him or her away. Live in the gentleness of Jesus. Act in love for all and as a people of sanctity seeing in the face of others we meet the face of Jesus Himself. The Gospel reminds us that we have been shown the way through Jesus Himself. If He is truly raised from the dead, then His teachings are from the Father and the will of God. If that is the case, as we know it is, then we have no other recourse but to strive to challenge ourselves to embrace His vision for our lives.
This Sunday, September 25th, is the Open House for our High School. It will take place from 2:00-4:30 PM outside Immaculata Hall. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience the “Catholic, Academic and Cheerful” School that St.Mary’s High School is known for. If you have considered or are considering the lasting benefits of a Catholic Education, I invite you to attend the Open House and meet our dedicated faculty and staff and experience the high caliber of students who attend our school.
As we prepare for our “Harvest Festival” there is still some help needed in various areas. Please see this bulletin for further details.
Our Religious Education Program is still in need of a few more volunteers. Please consider volunteering for this most important ministry to our young people. The blessings and rewards are great. I am so grateful to our Director of Religious Education, Mrs. Marie Granieri, for her dedicated service to our young people and love for our faith.
In Jesus, Fr. Bob

OUR LADY UNDOER OF KNOTS
Feast Day - September 28th
Mother who never refuses to come to the help of your children in need, Mother whose hands never stop working for the welfare of your children, moved as they are by the loving mercy and kindness that exists in your Immaculate Heart, cast your compassionate and merciful eyes on me and see the snarl of knots that exists in my life.
Oh Mother! You know the difficulties, sorrow and pain that I have had because of them. O loving Mother, I place the ribbon of my life and these knots into your loving hands, hands which can undo even the most difficult knot.
Most holy Mother, come to my aid and intercede for me before God with your prayers. I cast this knot into your hands and beg you to undo it, in the name of your son, Jesus Christ, and for the glory of God, once and for all.
Our Lady, Undoer of Knots, pray for us!

Society of St. Vincent de Paul
On September 27, the Church celebrates the feast of St. Vincent de Paul, who knew that “God had sent him to bring good news to the poor.” Together with your gifts, the members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul continue his work and mission in our parish. In the month of September, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to “bring good news to the poor,” by assisting families, providing food, help with utility and rent bills, etc. Thank You!
Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.

Religious Education
Dear St. Mary’s Family,
Now that the 2022/2023 year in catechism is here, I would like to extend a special invitation to join our wonderful program as a St. Mary’s Catechist. The return to inperson catechism and Catholic fellowship joyfully sparked a large number of students. Volunteers devoted to sharing the Gospel with the youngest members of our parish find that the experience grows their own faith, and deepens their relationship with Christ.
Children in today’s world, more than ever, need to know the infinite love that God has for each of them.
Will you consider devoting one hour a week to serve as a St. Mary’s Catechist? If you are interested in teaching the tenets of the Catholic faith to our students (Grades 1 -5), please contact me via the Religious Education Office (516-627-4028, ext. 1127). Classes begin September 29th!
With gratitude, Mrs. Granieri
RCIA and Adult Faith Formation
This is my body given for you
The OCIA (formerly known as RCIA) here at St. Mary’s has no candidates at this time. If you know any persons who are in need of completing their Sacraments of Initiation or coming into the Church or simply wish to deepen their relationship with God, this could be their opportunity to do so. Encourage them to call Sister Teresa to see how they can begin the process.
In the meantime, the OCIA team has the opportunity to learn more about the Church’s understanding of the process through the webinars that are now in their fourth week. These webinars, approved by the USCCB, are held weekly from now until February and cover every aspect of the workings of the OCIA. It is a national process that has more than two thousand five hundred people registered.
Sister Teresa can be contacted about our OCIA and other Adult Faith Formation programs at 516-627-0385, ext. 1010. Her office hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 10:00AM and 4:00PM and other times by appointment.
Scripture Study to Resume on Monday, September 26th, 2022
The Scripture Study Group at St. Mary’s will resume their study of Sacred Scripture with the reading and discussion of The Book of Daniel. Later in the season, informed by our study of the Book of Daniel, the class will revisit The Book of Revelation. The class uses the New Collegeville Bible Commentary series.
The group, which has been meeting for more than seventeen years, and has been led by Ms. Danielle Cisek for many of those years, continues during the school-calendar year on Monday mornings from 10:00 to 11:30 AM in the St. John Paul II Room. Former members, current and new members are most welcome. A copy of the Book of Daniel Commentary will be available for $17.00 at the class. COME and JOIN US!

What is a Knights of Columbus Family?
We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith. Our lives, time, efforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism.
We come from different places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world.
It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice.
Become a Knights of Columbus family.

Worldwide Marriage Encounter
It’s time to honor married couples for their long marriages. When you chat with your relatives and friends and they talk about how they survived World War II or what it was like to serve in the 1950s Korean War you should consider honoring them. Please nominate that couple for the Longest Married Couple Project, sponsored by Worldwide Marriage Encounter (WWME) starting today. Go to wwme.org longest married couple link to place your nomination or call 321-544-3440 or email dick.diane.baumbach@wwme. org
Worldwide Marriage Encounter is sponsoring a variety of in-person and virtual marriage experiences, some on weekends and some on seven weekdays. Couples will explore their relationship with each other, God, and the Church. Registration is limited and a $100 application fee is required. For more information or to apply, call Chuck & Maria Reiss at 631-486-8607 or visit them at https://wwmenyli.org/.
By this we came to know the love of God: that Christ laid down his life for us; so we ought to lay down our lives for one another. In the same way, your spouse should be the most important person in your life. Attend a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Experience together:
