It is truly one of the premiere arts events in the Twin Cities. Steak Sandwiches I create photo-based visual art. This broad definition for image creation allows me maximum conceptual space to experiment. 2016 marks 50 years of experience with multiple facets of both film and digital photography, and I have always embraced and blended whatever technologies have been available to me. My finished images can range in appearance from those of classic black and white prints to colorful, modified abstractions, in traditional or panoramic formats. Initial image capture may be digital or on film, but all my image processing is digital. As a former photofinisher and film photographer, I am grateful to have learned about lighting and composition by old-school training. These days I also appreciate the use of digital enhancement to create styles not previously possible to achieve.

Thank you to our Fall 2016 Poster Competition Jurors

Roger Nielsen attended the School at the Art Institute of Chicago and has been involved in the art and framing industries since 1959. He moved to Lowertown in the early seventies to establish Master Framers and fulfill a dream of transforming an empty warehouse on east 4th street into an artists’ community. Artists began moving into 262 Studios by 1975, and were among the first participants in the Saint Paul Art Crawl. He remains the owner of nationally known Master Framers where his areas of expertise include frame history, frame design, restoration of frames and paintings. As a longtime advocate for Lowertown's artist community, he served over 30 years on the Lowertown Redevelopment Corporation Board of Directors. Roger is an active Rotarian who has represented the organization on several international trips. He is currently semi-retired and back to his love of painting in his Northwestern Wisconsin studio.

Sarah Millfelt received her BFA in ceramics and photography from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in 1998, where she also pursued studies in journalism. Shortly thereafter, she was hired on as Northern Clay Center’s (NCC) outreach assistant, and also taught a variety of children, family and adult classes. She went on to direct NCC’s education, outreach and artist service programs from 2000 to 2011. Under her management, these programs experienced exponential growth. She became executive director of the Clay Center in fall of 2011. In addition to serving the greater ceramics community through her administrative prowess, Sarah was an independent wedding photographer for over 10 years. Today, her creative energies are supporting the growth and development of her 10 and 12-year-old sons, as well as her unpaid professions of gardener and baker.

Wendie Owens currently works as a media designer at the Science Museum of Minnesota. She creates video, audio and animation for theater experiences and games in museums around the country. She works closely with scientists and historians to film and create in-gallery documentaries for traveling exhibitions. Wendie has worked extensively in commercial entertainment as an animation director, storyboard artist, media designer and production manager. She has also done media work for television shows, commercials, feature films and educational video games, and has led teams of artists in interactive, video and print projects.

The Artistic Process: One Artist’s Perspective By: Lisa C. Mathieson, Local Artist The St. Paul Art Crawl asked me to introduce myself and my art. They asked that I share my thoughts on the creative/artistic process for this 25th Anniversary Art Crawl Catalog. I am honored to do so. I have been a part of this vibrant community for 10 years. And, like many other Art Crawl participants, I make my home in what we collectively call, “A live/work space.” This essentially means that my studio is in my living room! In a very tangible way, both myself and other local artists, are forced to live/breathe/coexist with our art on a daily basis. This is who I am as an artist. While I was a classically trained musician for the first half of my life, and later a painter, it was when I discovered ceramics when I began to believe in myself as a serious artist. This, of course, instantly changed my relationship to art and to the artistic process. Porcelain became my clay of choice, but like any possessed potter, (which is most of them) I would work with whatever material was available. Currently, I mostly wheelthrow, but I also enjoy handbuilding. What particularly appeals to me about porcelain is its raw, bonelike fragility. When thrown, it can become very thin. But it can be made very strong through compression. Glass, in much the same way, can be made strong through annealing. This is a process I became familiar with when I discovered glass, some two or three years into my ceramic venture into porcelain. I enjoy creating fused glass objects; often times I make earrings, bracelets, and pendants. But my heart, and hence my practice, is more invested in the sculptural aspects of glass. Glass astonishes me! It is amazing! It reflects. It refracts. It can both devour and deflect light. I love glass!

Now, a word on “process.” When I was younger I did graduate work in poetry. One of my best teachers often told us it takes years and years of work to become an overnight success. I agree with this. 100%. My “daily practice” is, in many ways, my “artistic process”. Like many other artists, it is the hours and hours that go into learning a new skill, and mastering a new medium, that slowly change us, over time, from a ‘hobbyist’ into an ‘artist’. For me, this process often involves frustration; even outright failure. But it is this, precisely; the frustration, the failure, the discipline and dedication, that render me a capable artist. The artists I respect work. They work daily. They are driven and utterly relentless in their need to create. This is the example I aspire to follow. I work. I work every day. I don’t wait for inspiration to come down from the sky and knock me over. I just keep practicing. And this way, if an inspiration does happen to visit me, I will have the skill necessary to express it. That, very briefly, is the artistic process as I see it. Here in Lowertown, we have a community drawing circle. We meet at the Black Dog on Sunday afternoons to practice our process. We invite all ages. And abilities. If you happen to be in the area, drop in! Join the community! Draw with us! Practice your artistic process with other local artists.

More recently, I have begun working in alcohol based inks. These are basically colored markers, which are light fast, pH balanced, and can be blended with/into each other. My “Wildlife” series, a colorful, geometric rendering of various animals, has been shown locally at both the Black Dog and Golden’s Deli.

Sponsors Partners

St. Paul Federal Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative committed to the betterment of all St. Paul residents. We do this by delivering financial products like car loans, credit cards, and savings accounts that feature rates significantly better than banks. But that's not the only way we can make our community a better place to live. The fine arts have been an important piece to elevated living for thousands of years. Whether art was inspired by, or commissioned by, commercial interests, it's important a good partnership thrives between artists and local business. There is no better way to strengthen the partnership between the credit union and the arts community than through sponsorship with the Art Crawl. This partnership can be more than just sponsorship. We look forward to partnering with the artists at the individual level by providing access to money saving tools and advice, and by empowering them in their own lives. The more we can help the artists navigate the world of personal finance, the more time they can spend generating incredible art for all to enjoy. We're incredibly impressed with the quality of work from our resident artists, and we're tremendously proud to be their partner. We encourage all St. Paul residents, artists and nonartists alike, to join St. Paul Federal Credit Union to learn firsthand how the credit union can improve your life. Thank you, St. Paul Federal Credit Union

Remembering the past, welcoming the new beginnings... Over the past 25 years, the Saint Paul Art Crawl has included a number of different buildings and locations. Of the five buildings that participated in the first Saint Paul Art Crawl, the JAX, 262 Studios, Lowertown Lofts Artist Cooperative, the Tilsner Artists’ Cooperative, and the Northern Warehouse Artists’ Cooperative all but the JAX are still participating and we are adding more each Crawl. This fall’s Art Crawl boasts 24 participating buildings, with locations not only in Lowertown but throughout St. Paul. New buildings this fall include Vandalia Tower in the Raymond District as well as the 7th and Arcade Galley and Flat Earth Brewery locations in the East Side District.

Many of the artists previously located in the JAX Building, which closed for redevelopment into apartments after the Spring Art Crawl, have relocated. The Show Art Gallery, formerly located in the Jax has moved two blocks west and around the corner to a beautiful new location in the Straus Building on Sibley Street. Other artists from the JAX building have moved to the basement of the Northern Warehouse to create the Underground Lowertown Artists. Whether you visit one of the new locations, or return to one of your favorites, your visit to the Saint Paul Art Crawl will be one not easily forgotten.

Art Crawl Scholarship Fund The Scholarship Fund was introduced in preparation for the Spring, 2016 Saint Paul Art Crawl. Following its success, artists were once again invited to apply for a scholarship. Generous donors have added to the fund this fall and include Billy G. Franklin, Larry Solarz, cypherMuse, LLC, and Thomas Zahn. The Scholarship Fund is meant to pay the registration fees for artists who cannot pay them. Applications are reviewed by a panel of three jurors to select up to 8 artists who receive a full Art Crawl Registration with an image, worth $65. In addition to providing struggling artists with registration for the Art Crawl, the hope for the future is to use the scholarship fund to provide artists with the supplies they need in order to create. Tax deductible financial donations toward the Art Crawl Scholarship Fund can be made online at: www.stpaulartcollective.org

Lowertown First Fridays is

a monthly event where artists open their studios and galleries participate, as in the art crawl, but LFF is located specifically in Lowertown. This smaller venue allows the pace to be slower, with more time to get to know the art and the artists. Visitors come from all over— Minneapolis, Eden Prairie, Blaine, Cottage Grove, Rochester, New York—not to mention up the street. And locals take along their guests: several have even brought buyers (yes, buyers) from London and Paris. The visitors say they appreciate the opportunity, and they’d like to see LFF continue and grow. The artists who participate are also enthusiastic. They know the LFF event offers an opportunity to connect with clients at a deeper level because there’s not such a rush. Furthermore, since it’s relaxed and casual, artists don’t need to go to extra trouble to tidy up or have a perfect display. Instead, they have time to focus on developing relationships with current and potential clients. LFF hours are 6 to 9:00 pm every first Friday, even if it falls on the 4th of July (but not Christmas). We would love to see you in Lowertown! www.lowertownfirstfridays.org/ Facebook: Lowertown First Fridays Instagram: #lowertownfirstfridays

The Saint Paul Art Crawl is produced each season by the St. Paul Art Collective, which relies on its members—artists and others who volunteer their time and resources—to make it happen. Dining at the Art Crawl

The Saint Paul Art Crawl is excited to present this Dining Section of the catalog where visitors are introduced to Restaurants, Bars, and Eateries that provide a variety of great cuisines while supporting the art and artists of the Art Crawl. A special welcome goes out to Round Table Coffee Works, our Dining Section Sponsor, as well as Dark Horse Bar & Eatery, our Art Crawl Catalog Sponsor. We hope visitors will show these sponsors as well as the partners included in this section their support. In order to further assist visitors locate these dining options, the Dining Section Sponsors and Partners have been included in an exclusive section of the Saint Paul Art Crawl Story Map Web App. Here, visitors can view the address and a photo of the exterior of each Dining Sponsor and Partner. Tested during the Fall, 2015 Art Crawl, the Story Map Web App continues to be a year round tool for visitors to locate Art Crawl Participant and Dining information by means of maps, directories, and images. Volunteers Jack Westman and Tammy Wick have returned each Art Crawl season to update and enhance the Story Map for Art Crawl visitors. These two are examples of not only the importance of volunteers to the Art Crawl, but the importance of art and creative ideas in the community. A link to the SPAC Story Map is posted on our website, www.saintpaulartcrawl.org

The Saint Paul Art Crawl: Celebrating 25 Years

T

he beginning of the Saint Paul Art Crawl dates back to the 1960s when artists began living in Lowertown Buildings including The Rossmor and 262. Several of these buildings were not even legal residences, some without heat! 1977 represents the first major milestone as the year artists in Lowertown joined together officially to organize the St. Paul Art Collective (SPAC). During the remainder of the late 70s and into the early 80s, the Art Collective continued to grow as more artists move into the area and, in 1985, cemented Lowertown as an arts district with the opening of Lowertown Lofts. Over the years, artists were already taking the initiative to organize open houses to show their artwork to visitors. A suggestion was given to the Art Collective Board of Directors to market these events as something larger. David Evans, a member of the St. Paul Art Collective Board of Directors, recalls the Board’s desire to take on any project it could so long as the project fit the mission. With the idea and support in place, the St. Paul Art Collective began to organize the first event, giving it the title of the Saint Paul Art Crawl, in 1991. Sifting through the materials collected during the past 25 years provides a visual insight into where the Art Crawl began and where it is today. During the first few years, the Art Crawl was only held for one night and everything a visitor needed to know could be provided on a onepage flyer. There were no catalogs, posters, or postcards, but it worked! Viewing these flyers and early materials also gives a sense of wonder at seeing some of the same buildings and artists listed then and now. Feelings of sadness and

loss emerge when seeing the names of locations once filled with artists, now turned into something different or left standing vacant. Moving ahead through the years one discovers, not only the move to a two or three day event, but also the first catalog printed for the Spring 1996 Art Crawl. It is a simple black and white and contains within its pages the name and locations of participating artists, galleries, and buildings. From this season, the catalogs reveal the growth and inclusive nature of the Art Crawl. Only one season later, color would begin to play a role, visible only on the cover for many years until the Fall, 2006 season when artists’ images are added to the interior pages. This same season represents the first official addition of participants located outside of the Lowertown and Downtown areas. For many seasons to come, the pages of the catalogs become fuller and more vibrant. The covers alone speak to the diversity of the participating artists and no two are alike. Visually and physically, this current catalog is possibly as different from the 1996 version as it could ever be. It is representative of the growth of an event that continues to be built with the hard work of volunteers, passionate artists and community relationships. Overall, the Saint Paul Art Crawl has developed to truly reflect its name with participating artists, galleries, nonprofits, and buildings located throughout St. Paul. Special Thanks to Andrew Gaylord, David Evans, Marla Gamble, and Tom Dunn as well as all those who have worked tirelessly to produce this event for 25 years.
