Welcome to the Spring 2016 Saint Paul Art Crawl! This year we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Art Crawl. In the late 1970s and early ‘80s the Lowertown district of St. Paul was a neighborhood of empty parking lots and abandoned warehouses quickly falling into disrepair. The affordability of the warehouse spaces attracted artists, and Lowertown quickly became the center of the St. Paul art scene. In 1977 a contingent of Lowertown artists founded the Saint Paul Art Collective with the mission of protecting spaces for artists to create and increasing the awareness of the crucial role that artists play in the greater cultural life of the Twin Cities. The founding artists of the Saint Paul Art Collective had their first group exhibition at the Union Depot. In the decade and a half that followed, the artists of the collective continued to hold loosely organized group events in and around downtown St. Paul. From 1981 to 1985, the collective also ran a critically acclaimed fine art gallery in Lowertown called the Wall St Gallery. In 1991, the Collective decided to coordinate a multiple building, weekend long, open studio event, and the Saint Paul Art Crawl was born. The five buildings that participated in the first Saint Paul Art Crawl were the JAX, 262 Studios, Lowertown Lofts Artist Cooperative, the Tilsner Artists’ Cooperative, and the Northern Warehouse Artists’ Cooperative. The Saint Paul Art Collective has been hosting the Art Crawl ever since, with the number of participating artists now exceeding 300 and the number of visitors averaging around 20,000 for each semi-annual, three-day event. This spring’s Art Crawl boasts twenty nine participating buildings, with locations not only in Lowertown but throughout St. Paul in buildings along University and Grand Avenues as well as in South Como, the East side and West 7th neighborhoods.

Recognized for its tremendous success, the Saint Paul Art Crawl has become a model arts event that is emulated in cities across the country. To the artists and residents of Saint Paul, the event means much more. The Art Crawl has evolved from a fun weekend art event to a framework for creating and fostering important, interdependent relationships between the arts community and the city of St. Paul. The Collective and its member artists receive a tremendous amount of support from residents, businesses and local government in order to stage an event of this magnitude, and in return they’ve given St. Paul a close-knit, vibrant and energetic art community that actively contributes to the greater Twin Cities cultural landscape. As we celebrate our 25th anniversary year, however, changes are coming to the original Lowertown neighborhood where the Art Crawl was born. Two of the original buildings, the JAX Building and 262 Studios (aka the Master Framers building) have been sold to private developers who plan to convert them to market rate housing. Artists in the JAX Building will need to vacate their spaces by May 1, just one week after the Art Crawl. The loss of both buildings means an extreme shortage of artist studio space since developers can collect higher rents for housing than for studio space. How will this change the Art Crawl in the next 25 years? Only time will tell but the St. Paul Art Collective needs your support, both emotionally and financially, if we are to continue to connect art and community in St. Paul. Voice your concerns and ideas to us and to city officials if you feel, as we do, that art is important to a healthy community. Tom Reynen President, St. Paul Art Collective Board of Directors

Thank You The St. Paul Art Collective is proud to announce the 25th Anniversary of the Art Crawl. The St. Paul Art Collective Board of Directors thanks the artists who open their doors and the volunteers who donate their time and talent to help coordinate the event including the Art Crawl Directors, Art Crawl Committee Members, Building Organizers, Greeters, and the Street Team. Programming for this event is brought to you by the volunteers and artists of the St. Paul Art Collective. This event is produced by the St. Paul Art Collective, and made possible by the State of Minnesota through grants and is funded and sponsored in part by the Minnesota State Arts Board, Clean Water Land & Legacy Amendment, a STAR grant from the City of Saint Paul, the Metropolitan Regional Art Council, and The Bush Foundation. Additional support comes from the generous sponsorship of local businesses including the Pioneer Press, AM 950, Metro Transit, Artspace, Modern Press, Union Depot, Drake Bank, The Halverson and Blaiser Group, Wet Paint, and others.

A special thank you to David Evans, a member for 30+ years on the St. Paul Art Collective Board of Directors, who shared with us his vision for a new format for the Art Crawl catalog which highlights the art of the participating artists and is something visitors can continue to look at and enjoy after the Crawl is over.

Art Crawl Scholarship Fund Each year during registration for the Saint Paul Art Crawl we learn of artists who cannot afford the registration fee to participate in the Crawl. In the past we have been unable to assist them since the Art Crawl operates on a very lean budget. Then last fall a woman named Angeline "Angie" Mayer passed away. She loved the arts, enjoyed the Art Crawls and was an amateur artist herself. In lieu of flowers for her funeral, she asked that memorials be made to the St. Paul Art Collective. We decided that money, along with contributions from Billy Franklin, Ta-coumba Aiken and cypherMUSE, LLC, would be used to form a scholarship fund for emerging and struggling artists. The scholarship fund is meant to pay the registration fees for artists who cannot pay them. A panel of judges was formed to review applications and this spring, 8 artists are recipients of a full Art Crawl registration with an image. Value $65.00. The 8 awardees will be performing 6 hours of volunteer work for the Art Crawl in return. The intent is to grow the remaining funds for the future. Tax deductible financial donations towards the Art Crawl Scholarship Fund can be made to The St. Paul Art Collective, 308 Prince Street, Suite 206, St. Paul, MN 55101

The Rossmor Building: A Living Piece of Art Crawl History By, Rashelle Brown

This year marks the 100-year anniversary of the Rossmor building, one of old Lowertown’s original art studio buildings. In 1916, the Rossmor was the Foot, Schulze & Co. building, named for the shoe factory that occupied all seven stories of the block-long brick and concrete warehouse. After the company was sold around the time of the Great Depression, the building acquired the Rossmor name and began renting space to light industrial companies and other businesses in piecemeal fashion. Sometime in the late 1960’s or early 70’s, a group of art teachers calling themselves Six on Seven rented a block of studios and set up a gallery on the northeast corner of the seventh floor. As word spread, other artists began renting space and soon the seventh floor was taken over by creatives.

Immediately after the redevelopment of the building in 2005, the Rossmor returned to the Art Crawl circuit and has remained on it ever since. “The history of the building was a real inspiration for me to start creating,” said Heather Cole, a visual artist who owns her unit on the sixth floor. Painter Bobby Haigh effused, “I love the Rossmor! It’s so cool, coexisting for a weekend with a community that supports and enjoys the energy and atmosphere of the Crawl.” He recalls “art raves” attended by as many as 500 people when he used to share studio space on the southwest corner of the seventh floor, back in the early 1980’s. Now he returns to the Rossmor each spring and fall as one of nearly 30 guest artists. Haigh’s stories echo other tales of the old Rossmor, recalling an era of wild freedom. They are told with the smiling bravado and rose-colored wash of folk lore that softens the reality of that past. The spartan conditions of those who lived (illegally) in their studios, and the tumultuous uncertainty over the possible threat of eviction are glossed over, while detailed recollections of the manually operated elevator and all-night parties abound.

“First the artists were on the seventh floor, and then they sort of spread down across the sixth floor, and by the time I left, the top three floors were all artists” recalls Marla Gamble, who rented studio space in the Rossmor from 1975-1985. In order to promote downtown artists and their work, the St. Paul Art Collective was formed in the late 1970’s, with Gamble and several other Rossmor artists holding key positions in the organization. A few short years later, a wave of redevelopment spread throughout Lowertown, and in 1982, when the artist-occupied 300 Building was redeveloped, the art collective’s Wall Street Gallery was forced to move. It found a new home on the seventh floor of the Rossmor, which had escaped the redevelopment boom of the 1980’s.

Encroachment | First Skyscraper to Invade Lowertown (As seen from Rossmor 5th floor) Oil On Canvas, 1984 | Marla Gamble

In the early 1990’s, when Lowertown artists began first organizing the Art Crawl, the Rossmor was among the buildings where Rose Marie Felsheim slid flyers under studio doors calling for artists to participate - and participate they did! Beginning in 1993, Rossmor artists participated in the Crawl until the building was sold for redevelopment in 2003. Many people saw this as the end of the Rossmor’s ties to the Saint Paul art scene, but although it was certainly the end of a chapter, the book was not quite closed.

24

In the end, the Rossmor did not escape the forward grind of capitalistic enterprise. As a current loft owner here, I’m a beneficiary of that enterprise and I have mixed feelings about that. From my loft, I can look out across the city from nearly the same vantage point as the Six on Seven once did. The landscape outside has changed as much as the interior of the Rossmor, but the old bones are still here. Under everything new and different, a perpetual vibe remains.

Today, artists still gather here twice each year to put their creativity on display. Residents prop their studio doors open, and guest artists line their work along those ethereal, sun-filled, Rossmor hallways. During those weekends in April and October, the building comes to life, buzzing with the kind of energy it had back in its artistic heyday. Those of us fortunate enough to be here now remember those who came before us, and we are humbled and grateful for the chance to take part in this chapter of the Rossmor’s artistic history. Special thanks to Marla Gamble, Rose Marie Felsheim, Bobby Haigh, Beth Stoneberg and Heather Cole for sharing stories and memories of the Rossmor past and present.

The Story Map is the brain-child of volunteer, Jack Westman who is assisted by volunteer photographer Tammy Wick. Following the serious auto accident of a friend’s brother, Jack assisted in a project to bring the Art Crawl to the brother by visiting artists to take photos and collect keepsakes. Through this project, Jack discovered the healing power of art as well as the compassion of the creative community. Realizing the need for a better way for visitors to experience the crawl and discover the many artists who take part, Jack volunteered to design the app. Originally tested during the Fall, 2015 Art Crawl, the Story Map now provides a directory of artists with location information and images, a listing of the galleries, and a special guide to dining options visitors can go to during the Art Crawl weekend. Tammy became involved to provide photos of the variety of buildings and restaurants involved. Jack and Tammy are examples of not only the importance of volunteers to the Art Crawl, but the importance of art and creative ideas in the community.

The Candidate

April 22-May 7 at Bedlam Lowertown Directed by Tyler Olsen, featuring Garrett Vollmer, Shannon Leach, Sadie Plendl, Michelle Casali, and Liz Carey-Linskey. Tickets $16" The day of the final presidential debate, the nominee from the newly formed “American Party Party” dies from a mysterious illness, leaving the party without a candidate! Rather than give up, the party decides to elect another candidate for the debate that night. Thus begins the most ridiculous democratic process ever imagined. Lying, cheating, blackmail, doublecrosses, even outright murder- nothing’s too outrageous in this hilarious political slapstick farce. And you’ll never guess who the actual candidate ends up being.

The Saint Paul Art Crawl is brought to the community twice a year because of the hard work of a large group of volunteers as well as the generous sponsorship from local businesses and organizations. This Spring, 2016 Art Crawl includes the highest number of participating buildings spreading across the 9 Art Crawl Districts of St. Paul making our Sponsors more important than ever. Sponsorship allows the Art Crawl to provide support to our growing number of artists and location and, special to this spring, a new catalog focusing on the variety of art and artists who take part in the Art Crawl. Sponsoring the Art Crawl also signifies the importance of creating enduring relationships between artists and the community.

Art Crawl Trivia The first Saint Paul Art Crawl was a one day event on Friday, October 16, 1992 and included 13 Galleries and Buildings and 33 Individual Artists in the Lowertown Community.
