Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium for today's Pitching-In Northern Premier League Midland Division game.

Today we extend a warm welcome to the Players, Officials and Supporters of Bedworth United Football Club and we hope you enjoy our hospitality here ths afternoon

Last Saturday we travelled to Boldmere St Michaels and were soundly beaten by the playoff chasing Mikes, losing 5-1. A horrible result on what turned out to be a horrible day all round if I'm honest. During the game we lost young goalkeeper Tom Finch with a nasty looking knee injury so we wish him well with his recovery to fitness.

This game was also to be the last for manager Pete Gill, who parted company with the club on Monday. We thank Pete for all his time and efforts whilst at the helm and wish him well for the future both at Cambridge United and outside the game.

Assistant Manager Sean Greygoose and Coach Marc Abbott have agreed to oversee the remaining games this season with the help of the senior squad members as we look to avoid the drop to Step Five in what has been a very difficult season.

Off the pitch, we have strengthened the Board of Directors this week by appointing joint CEO's, with Louise Sales and Mehmet Mimoglu stepping up, so please do congratulate them both should you bump into them at today's game.

I ask you all to come along to our remaining home games this season, bring your mates and relatives, swell the support numbers and play your part off the pitch as we look to get out of the drop zone. Get behind the lads from the off today and who knows, we may be celebrating a well earned win come 4.50pm

I would like to offer a warm welcome to the Fans, Officials, Management and Players of Bedworth United to the Premier Plus Stadium for today's game.

Earlier in the season we had a very close game with our visitors and if not for a late sending off for the Saints ,I feel sure we where close to securing a precious away victory only to be denied by a late turnaround by the home team who took advantage of the extra man and turned defeat in to victory and take the spoils on the day.

Firstly,I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Peter Gill for his time with Saints and wish him every success in his future career.

Bedfont had climbed from bottom of the table to 13th inspired by their victory over St Neots back in November and they arrived at the Hunts Post Community Stadium after an unbeaten run of ten matches. However that run never looked like being continued once St Neots had scored an early goal and the visitors managed just one direct shot on goal in the ninety minutes.St Neots had skipper Lewis Webb making his 99th start and he marked it with a man of the match non stop performance in midfield setting up a team selection conundrum for Manager Dennis Greene once AdrianSearregainshisfitness. StNeotsbeganwellandafterjustfiveminutesLewisHilliardhadtheballin the net after Ben Mackey’s first shot had been parried but the effort was ruled out by an offside flag. However they only had to wait a further six minutes before Stefan Moore unselfishly knocked down a Dan Jacob cross and Mackey rifled the ball in at the far post. Lewis Webb then drove his was through the defence but was robbed by a tumbling save from visiting keeper Gary Ross and then Dan Jacob headed wide from a Moore corner. Little was seen of the Bedfont attack as they persisted with just one up front but they struggled to stifle the midfield drive and invention of Webb andJuniorKonadu. DwainWilliamsdidmanagertowinaduelintheairbut headedwideofgoalandJordanGentthenwentcloseattheotherendwith aheadergratefullygrabbedatfullstretchbyRoss. RightonhalftimeJacob picked up a splendid cross field pass from Hope but drove his shot across goal.

Ironically it was Bedfont’s first corner of the match after 48 minutes that led to St Neots second goal. A defensive header allowed Lewis Hilliard send Stefan Moore away on the left and he had lots of time to pick out the unmarked Ben Mackey fifteen yards from the line for the second goal. Within two minutes it could have been a Mackey hat trick but his rasping volley hit the underside of the crossbar and was scrambled away.Bedfont were slightly less defensively minded and this opened up spaces for St Neots to exploit and from a Rene Steer cross Dan Jacob saw his shot rebound from the cross bar. By now St Neots had sent on Pearson Mwanyongo to run at the tiring defence and they also added Rashid Kamara and Shane Tolley to their attack. Bedfont managed one direct shot from Dwain Williams but then reverted to their defensive formation but they could not prevent St Neots third goal as the lively Pearson Mwanyongo drifted past his marker and rounded the goalkeeper to complete the scoring six minutes from time to the delight of the home fans.

GOOD AFTERNOON AND A WARM WELCOME TO BEDWORTH UNITED WHO ARE VERY FAMILIAR VISITORS TO THE PREMIER PLUS STADIUM

In fact, since our promotion to Step Four in the 2011/12 season our two sides have met no fewer than fourteen times – twelve times in the league and three times in the FA Trophy (note second league match in 2020/21 not played because of COVID). Recent results (excepting our FA Trophy meeting at Bedworth in October 2020) have all been drawn or decided by the odd goal so a close contest appears to be on the cards this afternoon. In fact a glance at the league table shows our sides just six points apart with Bedworth three places ahead of our lads but still requiring points in their final six league matches to guarantee status at this level next season.

When our two sides met at Bedworth earlier this season a goal from Joe Rider insufficient to prevent us returning home with a 2-1 defeat that was one of ten league reversals suffered on our travels so far this season. Bedworth have so far only won twice in the league away from home this season at Dereham and Daventry. Last Saturday they earned a point in a goalless home draw with high flying Spalding.

In cup competition this season Bedworth have had little success. It began well back in August when they defeated UCL side Coventry Sphinx by a goal to nil in the extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup but in the next round after a draw at Newcastle Town they lost a home replay. In the FA Trophy they were defeated at home by Harborough Town and in the Birmingham Senior Cup they suffered another home defeat – 4-1 at the hands of Lye Town.

A determined and well-organised gutsy performance from St Neots deservedly earned them what could prove to be three priceless league points as they bid to retain their Step Four status. Harborough started the day just seven points shy of the play-off zone but despite playing their part in a very competitive contest they were beaten by their hosts and slipped to ninth in the league table. With several injuries to contend with, St Neots were forced to leave three partly fit players from last week on the bench but to their delight leading scorer Trey Charles made a second half appearance to score the winning goal.How the teams went to the break with the scoresheet still blank remains a mystery. Three times the woodwork was struck as both teams went all out in a display of attacking football and there was little let-up after the break with both goals under siege at one stage, or another. St Neots employed the lively Dan Barton up front alongside Liam Smyth and he terrorised the visiting defence who stopped him with a series of fouls earning one visiting defender an early booking and withdrawal. The enforced team changes saw Trey Charles, Charlie Lewis and Liam Hook on the bench replaces by Jon-Paul Duncliffe, Dan Barton and Liam Smyth recalled to the side – the latter for only his second start. Dan Barton broke clear of the visiting defence in the first minute but shot into the side netting and five minutes later Albert Adu cut in to hit the bar with visiting keeper Elliott Taylor beaten. The visitors responded quickly with Rhys Hoenes drifting past two defenders to set up Joel Carta who brought a full length save from Tom Finch after seven minutes. Six minutes later following a Josh Walsh free kick the visitors then hit the bar and the end-to-end action continued unabated. Tom Finch then had to save bravely at the feet of ArlottJohn Dempsey and the visitors were only stopping Dan Barton’s attacking runs with a series of fouls earning free kicks. After 27 minutes Liam Smyth was played clear but shot wide and at the other end Dempsey saw an effort rebound from the crossbar. The first half ended with a brave diving header by Albert Adu from a Callum Anderson cross pass just the wrong side of a goalpost.

The second half restarted in the same way with both sides looking committed to attacking football. Harborough had the first clear chance but Dan Forbes glanced his free header wide of the far post but the early introduction of Trey Charles seemed to buck St Neots. Adu was looking menacing with his attacking runs at defenders and he set up Manny Osei whose finish was wildly over the cross bar. Charles then fed Adu who moved inside his marker to bring a good save from Taylor and the lively Barton then saw an effort blocked by a defender.On the hour a flare up saw Tommy Boxer and Rhys Hoenes booked and three minutes later Charles had the ball in the net from a through pass by Adu but he was ruled fractionally offside. The visiting keeper then did well to parry another effort by Charles and from an Aaron Smith free kick Tommy Boxer saw a close range shot deflected for a corner. With eleven minutes left an Adu shot was parried and Trey Charles pounced to claim what proved to be the winning goal. There was still time for late efforts at both ends, but that one priceless strike by Charles proved to be enough.

With every point now vital as St Neots strive to maintain their survival at Step Four this was a pallid performance against an in-form Boldmere relishing their debut season at this level. Then the news came through that Dereham had won at Loughborough to dump St Neots back to 18th in the table. That made it a bad day all round with a second heaviest away defeat of the season suffered and the only chink of consolation was that Robbie Mason’s goal was the only one scored in five visits to Birmingham this season. With matches to come against the top two sides in the table points will be hard to come by. Again, multiple team changes made it difficult for the side to settle but with Joe Rider and Lewis Hook still injured and Panny Boxer unavailable some changes were inevitable. Into the starting line-up came top scorer Trey Charles along with Robbie Mason, Joe Tarpey, and Charlie Lewis with Manny Osei and Albert Adu on the bench.

What St Neots did not want was to concede an early goal but that happened in Boldmere’s first serious attack after just six minutes as full back Aris Christopherorou picked up a loose defensive clearance to cross for Curvin Sanderson to beat Tom Finch from close range.Back in the side Robbie Mason was making his presence felt for the visitors shooting narrowly wide before bringing a good save from home keeper Kieran Harrison. After 28 minutes a St Neots attack broke down and a long clearance was flicked on to Owen Parry who added a second goal for the home side.St Neots replied with a Tommy Boxer effort that flew over the crossbar but there was no holding the rampant home forwards as ten minutes before the break a lengthy free kick by Jack Burgess seemed to take an awkward bounce inside the far post as it eluded Tom Finch’s desperate dive. Boxer was upended in a St Neots attack but the free kick from the edge of the box by Trey Charles was blocked by the defensive wall and the first half ended with Finch atoning for his earlier error with a good save from Andre Brown.

Tommy Boxer had picked up an injury and did not reappear after the break so the versatile Charlie Lewis moved from midfield into defence with Albert Adu substituting. Finch was again in action after 52 minutes producing the save of the match to deny a fierce Kieran Westwood volley but the match took a significant twist on 56 minutes when visiting keeper Finch picked up a significant knee injury unsuccessfully attempting to deny Michael Tait-Mason scoring Boldmere’s fourth goal. With the keeper stretchered off Lewis took over in goal – his third role in the match – with Steven Sylvester coming on to fill the defensive role. St Neots then enjoyed their best spell of the match as Adu saw a net-bound shot deflected for a corner and then saw a second effort blockedby a defender. However, after 75 minutes following more pressure when the home defence failed to clear, Robbie Mason claimed St Neots’ consolation goal – his fourth league goal of the season. St Neots sent on their final substitute and enjoyed the better of the exchanges late in the match but seven minutes into injury time Aaron Smith pulled down Andre Brown in the area and the home player got up to rap home the resultant penalty kick to complete the scoring.

BEDWORTH UNITED FC HISTORY

The first Bedworth Town football club was formed in 1895 when several matches were played against other local teams. They became founder members of the Nuneaton and District League in 1898, but by 1900 the club had disbanded.

Finishing runners-up in the Second Division of the Coventry and North Warwickshire League in the 1904-05 season, the ECS changed their name to Bedworth Town on winning promotion and stayed in existence until the early 1920s. During that time, the town fielded a fine player in Jack 'Sandy' Sheldon who later played for Manchester United, Liverpool and Luton Town.

A third club came on the scene in 1925, when Collycroft United, formed in 1916, became the third team to name themselves Bedworth Town.

This was the most successful of the pre-war clubs, they were members of the Coventry and North Warwickshire League and spent one season in 1936-37 in the Central Amateur League. The last club to become Bedworth Town was formed in 1947, and as a semi-professional club, secured membership of the Birmingham Combination and soon hit the headlines. They won the championship in successive seasons - 1948-49 and 1949-50 seasons - and in the 1949-50 season were also defeated in the Final of the Birmingham Senior Cup.

For season 1954-55, Bedworth joined the Birmingham League and they qualified for the Northern Section for the league’s inaugural First Division. The Birmingham League was re-named the West Midlands League in 1962, but lack of success and problems off the field saw Bedworth Town change their name to Bedworth United in 1968.

In 1972 they obtained membership for the Southern League Division One North. In their first season they finished bottom, but this was only to be a setback as they made rapid strides into the Premier Division when the league was re-formed in 1982.

In the Premier Division, they finished 5th in 1982-83 season, and were stable in this league until a poor run saw them relegated at the end of the 1988-89 season. On February 23rd 1982, the non-league world was staggered when a crowd of 5,172then a record for the Southern League in its new form - turned up at their Oval ground to watch them beat Nuneaton Borough 1-0 to go top of the league.

BEDWORTH UNITED FC HISTORY

After becoming Bedworth United, they won the Birmingham Senior Cup on three occasions in the 1980s and were beaten finalists to West Bromwich Albion in the 1987-88 season. Bedworth United were relegated to the Southern League Midland Division in 1988-89 season until the appointment of St Lucia-born Brendan Phillips as manager in 1990 launched a revival in the club’s fortunes.

From 1990 to 1997, the Greenbacks pushed for promotion back to the Southern League’s top flight and enjoyed a top six finish in four of the next five seasons. Phillips was tempted to move to Stafford Rangers during the 1992-93 season, but progress was continued under the helm of former Notts County midfielder Dean Thomas. Unfortunately, achieving the heady heights of a third place finish in the 1995-96 season, the club overstretched itself financially - and they faced possible closure until a group of die-hards acted to keep the club alive. After that, the Greenbacks occupied a bottom half finish for 14 seasons until the appointment in May, 2011, of a bright, forward-thinking management team led by Steve Farmer, assistant Adam Cooper, and the experienced Ian Roper on the field. In his first season, Farmer - at 31 the youngest manager in the club’s history - led them to their first promotion in their 65-year semi-professional history.

After finishing in a highly-creditable third place, they won promotion after beating Uxbridge 2-1 in a Semi-Final Play-off and defeating Beaconsfield SYCOB 3-1 in the Final. Sadly, the fledgling manager showed his inexperience by changing his promotion-winning team from the start and it culminated in the club lasting just one season back in the Southern League Premier Division as they finished in 21st place and went down on goal difference

2013-14 The Greenbacks played in the Evo-Stik NPL Division One South. Andrew Fuller took over as Manager, however he resigned after a few weeks and was replaced by Nick Hawkins who unfortunately was unable to improve the results. He was then replaced by Stuart Storer along with Andy Penny as his assistant. Both came from Hinckley United. After a difficult start they produced a settled squad and staved off relegation at the end of the season.

2014-15 The Greenbacks returned to the Southern Football League. Stuart Storer remained as manager and in his first full season in charge the club once again won promotion after a 2-0 win over Barton Rovers in the Play-off Final. This was after finishing fourth after the league programme had been finished. This was the clubs first season on its new artificial grass pitch.

2015-16 The club played once again in the Southern Football League Premier Division. The season started slowly and a number of changes to playing staff made up until Christmas. The club pushed to avoid relegation but ultimately were unsuccessful, although all agree this was due to the start of the season and not the group of players at the club at the end.

The 2016-17 season saw the club play once again in the NPL Division One South. A season that saw a number of injury problems and changes in playing staff saw a midtable finish. The club did have a successful run in the FA Cup, eventually losing out to National League side Curzon Ashton.

2017-18 Saw the team struggle in the league early on with injuries and Stuart Storer was unable to field the same team for two games in a row. Come Christmas though with the team becoming more settled results started to come and the Greenbacks push saw them finish fourth in the league and make the Play-offs where they met Chasetown in the Semi-Final running out 2-1 winners to book a place against Stamford in the Final. Bedworth eventually won 2-1 after extra-time after conceding seven minutes into injury time. With the restructuring of the Leagues Bedworth were now promoted into the Evo-Stik Southern Premier League Central. Unfortunately this foray into Step 3 of the non-league ladder was short lived and the team were relegated back to Step 4 at the end of the 2018-19 season.

In the Season that never was due to Covid-19 The Greenbacks were getting a head of steam up and were looking like they might have made the Play-offs but with the season being brought to a premature halt Bedworth would start the 2020-21 season in Step 4 again. Bedworth started well in the 2020-21 season only suffering defeat in the games they played and were sitting second in the league when again due to Covid the season was curtailed.

2021/22 season saw Bedworth again move from the Southern League to the NPL into the Midland Division where after a poor start to the season saw the side go on an unbeaten run through December and January which saw them get to within touching distance of the Play-off places but a loss at the end of January led to them losing momentum and finishing midtable.

STUART STORER (Manager)

Stuart took over the managers’ role at Bedworth at Christmas 2013. The club were looking doomed at the foot of the table. Fortunately with the staff and players he brought to the club all rallied around to fight off relegation. Stuart played professional football for 19 years. Birmingham City, Wigan, Everton, Bolton Wanderers, Exeter City and Brighton and Hove Albion amassing 400 first class appearances. He played non-league with Kettering, Chesham and Hinckley, before becoming a coach, he holds an A licence in coaching.

ANDY PENNY (Assistant Manager)

Andy resides near Stafford and has had a long playing career. His first club was Tamworth before moving to Barnet, then Stafford Rangers. He then had a very successful spell at Bedworth United, the fans still remember this, and he is a local hero. He also played for Solihull, Hinckley United, Redditch United, Stratford Town and finally hanging his boots up at Chasetown. Andy became the reserve manager at Chasetown before taking the assistant managers’ job at Hinckley United in 2013. After Hinckley United disbanded Andy took his present post at Bedworth.

JAMIE LENTON (Coach)

Jamie started off his football career as a youngster at Coventry City. He was born in Bedworth and now resides in Coventry. Jamie had a successful non-league playing career mainly with Hinckley United. Other clubs he has had short spells with are; Bedworth, Nuneaton, Leamington and Solihull. He made over 300 appearances for Hinckley mainly playing left wing back. He has a wealth of experience and knowledge in non-league football. Jamie is a UEFA A licence coach and is now Academy Manager with the clubs successful Academy Education Programme.

SAM

LOMAX

Sam started off his career at Aston Villa. After being released he began his nonleague journey with Rugby Town, having made 40+ appearances. As a summer signing last season the larger than life goalkeeper has settled well within the squad and has become a bit of a cult hero due to his height amongst the junior section at the club.

Luke is a local lad, and he has grown in stature under the guidance of the coaching team. Luke a left sided player was one of the managers‘ first signings from Hinckley, where he played under the current management team. He has played in New Zealand for Wellington making several appearances for the New Zealand national youth team and has a senior cap for his country. He always seem to feature in the end of year award ceremonies

Elliot is quite an experienced player despite his young age. The combative midfielder was a youngster at Coventry City and played for Nuneaton Town youth team before joining Bedworth. He has made well over 200 appearances for the club and can play in a number of positions with relative ease.

REECE BLACKMORE

Reece is now in his 6th season with Bedworth, Reece as a youngster up until U16 was playing at Derby County where he then moved on to play youth football at Kettering Town. Bedworth signed him from Coventry Sphinx and since then he has been a regular in the team becoming a fan favourite because of his combative style of play and no nonsense attitude to the game.

RICHARD BLYTHE

Richard is a centre midfielder who is happy to mix it but is equally good with the ball at his feet, Richard is another player who has returned to the club after a season at Rugby. He was club captain in the promotion winning season and hopes that he can relieve that glory again this season. Weighed in last season with his share of goals.

KYLE BARNETT

Kyle is a strong centre back and also a new signing for this season. Kyle has come to us from Daventry Town and has a footballing CV that lists Coventry United, amongst others. Kyle has impressed in his time here at Bedworth United and has formed a good relationship with his defensive peers.

CURVIN

ELLIS

Curvin is a new addition for this season signing from Stratford Town. Curvin who has affectionally been ‘Swervin Curvin’ at his previous clubs is a big six foot five forward who will bring something different to the team. He has been playing for Sutton Coldfield last season. He has a big strong physical presence who has a great attitude

RYAN MOORE

Ryan comes to Bedworth United from Sutton Coldfield FC. He signed in July 2021 and has made over 50 appearances at our current level. The cultured 23 year old full back started his career off at Birmingham City FC youth set up. Ryan is a quiet steady performer who never lets his level drop always an 8 out of 10 every week.

LIAM LOCKETT

Liam started his football journey at Worcester City progressing through their youth ranks to their first team. Liam is a skillfull midfielder who seems to glide past opponents and has an eye for goal in his time here at Bedworth he has hit the net with some sublime goals at vital times and is definitely one to watch this season.

Defender signed this season from Coventry United. Aggressive defender with a winning mentality lists Racing Club Warwick and Coventry Sphinx before Coventry United

WILLIAM EDJENGUELE

Experienced strong defender with a wealth of experience has played not only in this country but in the top divisions in France, Switzerland, and Greece. Played a season at Coventry United where he quickly became a fan favourite unfortunately his time at the Sky Blues was brief due to Coventry’s financial issues at the time

KHALLEM BAILEY-NICHOLS

Khallem returns for the third time back to The Oval a strong tricky striker with an eye for goals has recently been at Kettering Town, Worcester Town and Redditch United.

Tyler has come to us from Barwell where he was top scorer last season a striker who knows where the goal is previously at Coventry United.

LIAM MURPHY

A physical mobile striker who always puts 100% in a product of our junior and youth setup a key member in last season’s dominance by our U21s and Youth sides

ETHAN BAYNHAM

Another product of the successful U21s last year Ethan is a strong aggressive physical player who despite his young age loves to mix it

MAX DIXON

Max is a strong Pacy attacking player who can list Lichfield, Rushall Olympic and was a product of Coventry Academy.

JAMES SANDERSON

Another one of our home grown talents. A calm dependable young player with a great attitude one to watch for the future.

MAX JOHNSON

A technical midfielder who loves to get on the ball and create things came through the Strachan Football Academy and has also played for Rugby Town in America

ETHAN PATTERSON

Ethan is a product of Aston Villa’s Academy where he regularly captained the Under 18s side. After being released by Villa at the end of the 2018-19 season, the defender attracted interest from clubs in the Championship and League One Ethan though headed off to Iceland to play in the top division for Throttur Vogum side managed by former Portsmouth and Charlton Athletic star Herman Hreidarsson. His contract in Iceland ended in January 2021 but due to the pandemic, he was unable to get back into the game here until being handed a chance by Alvechurch.
