y son has a poster on his bedroom wall - Make Art Not War, a sentiment that would, no doubt, be lost on President Putin and his acolytes.

It sounds fantastical I know, but just imagine if anyone who had ill feelings for another, simply took out a pencil and paper and drew, or painted a watercolour, wrote a poem, sang a song, or simply stopped for a moment and looked at the beauty of our beautiful world? Creativity is our theme for this edition and I’m not talking arty-fartyshhh-please-don’t-touch-highly-exclusive-art, but stuff we can all get involved with. From art classes at The Omega Centre, to joining a drawing session at St Simon’s church to raise money for Afghanistan (p.41). Make a 'situationist map’ at Kate Street’s free workshop (p.38), or bake a cake, plant something, or write a letter to a friend? Or simply join one of the many Ports Fest events (p.26). Creativity comes in many guises but they all go to make our lives more fulfilling and enjoyable.

GETTING CREATIVE

A

Kevin Dean artist, editor, and tutor, talks about creativity and his ambitions for The Omega Art School

ll humans are creative. We have a unique ability to conceive an idea and to bring it to life, whether it’s a building development, decorating our front room, writing a novel, or sending a witty text. Some people have the talent to become professional artists, actors ,and musicians, but very often their talent is something they have nurtured through years of practice and determination. So often people new to art lack confidence in their ability and feel they are not good enough, comparing themselves to someone they perceive to be better than them. We should see the work that professional artists give us as a delight and inspiration, rather than something to measure ourselves against, in the same way as Sunday footballers enjoy a kick

about on Southsea Common after watching Match of the Day the night before. Art can allow us to relax, to understand ourselves and what we care about, it adds enormous value to our lives.

THE OMEGA ART SCHOOL was an idea I had in 2020 just before COVID, after years of part-time teaching in art schools. The concept was simple to give adults an art school experience with welldesigned classes, delivered by invited professional artists who are experts in their field, from drawing and watercolour to acrylics and printmaking. Since last autumn the school has become increasingly popular, with 6 half-day and evening classes running this term. Each class Cont’d p.10

begins with inspiring talks, demonstrations, and hand-outs, along with access to online resources including art history, recommended exhibitions and artists, along with suggestions for homework, which can be sent to tutors for feedback. All materials are supplied. Most of the classes are held at the Omega Centre but also at Art Space Portsmouth, where I have my studio. The vision is to keep growing the school. To give more people of all abilities the opportunity to enjoy their creativity, with new skills and confidence, in a safe, fun environment. All our students are encouraged to be brave, but not perfect creatives.

THE OMEGA CENTRE was built in 1881 by the Portsmouth School Board because they believed that ‘every child has a right to the best education’. When the school closed, the building continued to be used for education, housing university arts courses. Examples of student’s murals and decorations can still be seen on its ceilings and doors inside the building. Besides the Omega Art 10

School, current occupants include The Heart of Portsmouth Boxing Academy and, The Pompey Pirates Literacy Club. Also, a ceramics studio, and The Portsmouth Printmaking Studios, managed by The Makers Guild, The Southsea Shakespeare Players and the Chris Wood Atelier Life Drawing workshop. Last month this eclectic mix of groups, formed a Charitable Incorporated Organisation to take over the management of the building from the councillor trustees who currently own it. The aim is for the centre to continue as a vibrant hub of creative and sporting activity. The city council is helping to put together a business plan. MIMI GREEN’S DELI DEVELOPMENTS Since last October, Mimi Greens in Palmerston Road has become firmly established as the perfect Mediterranean deli, selling a wide range of groceries, from sun dried tomatoes to Panettone, along with a well-stocked cheese and cold meats counter. Kim, the owner, has also invested in a top of the range coffee/espresso machine. Having also been granted a licence to sell alcohol he is also selling a fine selection of wines and has put a few tables outside the shop. “We can now serve anti pasta with a glass of wine, lemoncello, grappa or perhaps coffee and cake, the perfect lunch, or start to a summer’s evening,” said Kim.

Mimi Green’s Deli also produces its own charcuterie, with some excellent salami, Parma ham and prosciutto, all from Italy. “We can put together a charcuterie platter along with cheese and olives, for your table, to take on a picnic, or to simply enjoy while watching TV,” said Kim. MY FAVOURITE SUMMER LUNCH Words: Daniel Nowland

I’

m sat writing this article on the beach at Eastney in the sunshine, thinking to myself how lucky I am to live in Southsea. As summer approaches we can look forward to those impromptu BBQs and picnics on the beach, and hopefully we can go back to summers without any restrictions on social gatherings!

We sell this salad every day in The Southsea Deli, and we are blessed to have the fabulous Isle of Wight tomatoes at our disposal. They supply us with brilliant tomatoes all year round, but come into their own this time of year as all of the shapes and colours are also available.

Thinking about picnics and BBQs I want to share with you the recipe for my absolute favourite summer salad, perfect as a quick lunch or a brilliant addition to a picnic or party. The humble panzanella salad was born out of Tuscany as a way for poor farming people to use up tomatoes from their land and leftover stale bread. With the addition of a few special flavours, this becomes a bomb of flavours and freshness.

To make a salad for 4 people, combine in a bowl, equal parts torn stale crusty bread (ideally sourdough) and roughly chopped tomatoes. Chop the larger tomatoes into large chunks and the smaller tomatoes into halves or quarters. I suggest a handful of tomatoes and bread per person.

ADD TO THE BOWL: 100g pitted olives, roughly chopped 1 tbsp lilliput capers Half a red onion, finely sliced 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 tbsp red wine vinegar 18

1 tbsp sea salt flakes 1 tsp cracked black pepper 1/2 bunch fresh basil leaves, roughly torn Toss everything together and leave for 30 minutes or so to allow the bread to soak up the juices. Toss again and serve. This salad is a meal in itself, but it makes a brilliant addition to grilled meats for something more substantial. A favourite of mine for a BBQ is to serve this alongside some simple grilled skewers of pork shoulder. I like to marinade diced free-range pork shoulder in olive oil, lemon juice, oregano, and black pepper. Once on a skewer these take 8-10 minutes on a BBQ, and then season with salt at the very end. All that’s missing is a chilled glass of Italian white wine... cheers!

GOLD KIWI AND LIME TRAYBAKE Preparation time: 25 minutes + cooling. Cooking time: 25 minutes. Serves: 15-20

INGREDIENTS

225g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing • 225g caster sugar • 3 British Blacktail Free Range Medium Eggs • 250g self-raising flour • 1 tsp baking powder • 1⁄2 tsp fine salt • 5 tbsp whole milk • 4 unwaxed limes, zest

METHOD 1 Preheat the oven to 180oC, gas mark 4;

grease then line a 33cm x 22cm cake tin with baking parchment. In a large mixing bowl, use electric beaters to cream together the butter and sugar for 2-3 minutes until light and fluffy. One at a time, beat in the eggs, then lightly beat in the flour, baking powder and salt until just combined.

2 Add the milk and zest of 3 limes to the

bowl and beat gently until just combined. Tip into the cake tin, level the top, then bake for 20-25 minutes until golden and risen, and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Set aside to cool in the tin.

3 For the topping, use electric beaters to beat the butter and icing sugar in a mixing bowl for 2

minutes until light and fluffy. Beat in the soft cheese until combined to a thick, creamy frosting, then beat in the lime juice. Spread the frosting all over the cake, then arrange the kiwi fruit on top.Scatter over the remaining lime zest and slice to serve.

Cooks’ tip To peel a kiwi fruit, it's best to top and tail first, then remove the skin using a vegetable peeler (this works best on firmer fruits). Alternatively use a sharp knife to cut downwards, around the fruit. Thousands of recipes can be found at www.waitrose.com/recipes

A TRADITION OF QUALITY AND SKILL

T

Keith Scorgie of Design House Southsea talks about the long tradition of sewing in this region

hirty years ago, the Design House sewing room started life with just 1 sewer based in an industrial unit in central Southampton until we moved to our Romsey premisses in 2005. As demand increased for good quality soft furnishings at an affordable price, Design House expanded, and we now employ 3 full time experienced and expert seamstresses. We hand-make all our curtains and soft furnishings from a simple cushion to the

28

elaborate drapes complete with swags and tails. To be a seamstress is a unique skill and Southampton and the surrounding area has historically been the hub of good quality sewers throughout the last century. Its heyday was before the second world war and throughout the 1950s and 60s when all the cruise liners used to be refurbished in Southampton docks. The skill stays alive to this day, but there is a need for new young

sewers to train and to take up the craft, so that the skill is not lost for the future. The Design House sewing team are perfectionists and they take huge pride in their work. The making of a Roman blind for example, takes precision skill, as well as the knowledge to ensure that they not only look amazing but meet all the latest safety criteria.

If you order curtains, blinds, cushions or any soft furnishings from Design House, you can rest assured that you will get the best quality finished product.

A PIER INTO THE PAST Neil Maxwell

M

y work gives me the opportunity to see some beautiful and historic houses in the city. Recently we were invited to appraise the Old Customs Watch House located on the Point in Old Portsmouth. For those of you searching your memories for the location, its next to door to the Still and West pub and has the little pier with the hut at the end that just peeps out into the harbour.

The house is currently arranged as a four bedroom property with a fifth bedroom/study but its versatility is obvious. On the Ground floor the magnificent, former boat house complete with flagstone floor has the typically large boathouse doors that can be folded all the way back to enjoy the view. And from the ceiling, there still hangs the storage rack for the oars that were used to propel the customs cutters.

Used by her Majesties Customs officers until the early 1970s the property dates back to the mid 17th Century and used to feature a slipway, from which the Custom’s launch entered the Harbour and then out to the Solent. The slipway was replaced in the 1900s by the concrete pier with a set of davits for launching the Custom Cutters and a unique watch hut so the officers could see around the edge of the Quebec Hotel and the Pickfords Removal’s warehouse that used to adjoin the property.

Whilst researching the history of the property we stumbled across a fascinating and somewhat surprising tale from June 1809. Apparently, a cargo of gunpowder barrels along with luggage and other goods had been placed on an area of beach that could once be found outside the Still and West. Two local washerwomen were enjoying a smoke from their clay pipes. When one of the women tapped her pipe to clear it, sparks were emitted which then ignited the gunpowder. There followed a large explosion, destroying property and showering the harbour and nearby roofs with the women’s washing. Amazingly the washerwoman were saved by their washing tub that blew on top of them, shielding them from the blast.

One point of interest, I discovered that the Quayside, next to the Old Customs House, on which the nearby Quebec House now sits, was once used for ferries to France and also for Pickfords to move furniture to and from the Isle of Wight. The Old Customs House boasts many period features, one being the letterbox, which is set at the top of the door, moved from lower in the door as the Customs officers were so upset with locals using it as a urinal! 32

If you’d like to make a less eventful visit to see the property, we’re looking forward to showing financially verified parties around the house in the near future.

NEW GREEN RULING COULD HELP TO EASE COST OF LIVING CRISIS FOR RENTAL SECTOR

W

ith so much focus on rising heating bills in recent months, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon for people living in rented accommodation. By 2025 all new tenancies must have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of at least Band C from 31st December 2025] and for existing tenancies this will apply from 31st December 2028, according to Buy Association. The Property Management team at Chinneck Shaw is supporting landlords as they prepare their properties to meet the new legislation. While the changes are designed to be kinder to the planet, tenants will inevitably benefit from lower fuel bills as a result of living in more energy-efficient homes. According to research conducted by Landbay, portfolio landlords — those with 10 properties or more — are taking the rule changes most seriously and are planning on using EPC ratings as an investment tool and a way to increase the value and desirability of their properties. More than half (53%) said they would consider investing in a property rated D or lower and then bring it up to at least a C rating with renovations. We appreciate this is a cost to the landlord, but the benefits are likely to help to retain tenants in properties with better energy ratings,

34

resulting in fewer voids and vacant properties letting more quickly. We see the move to greater energy efficiency in rented homes as a positive

move not only for the sector, but also for the planet. Being mindful of environmental matters is a key concern for Chinneck Shaw. We are working with Carbon Footprint Ltd to analyse our carbon footprint, with the aim of offsetting and reducing the impact the business has on the environment. We used their business calculator to calculate our business carbon footprint and so far we have invested in: •

Tree planting in South East UK

Tree planting in the Great Rift Valley, Kenya.

• • •

Global Portfolio of verified Carbon

we sell. Chinneck Shaw has registered with

Reduction Projects

a scheme that allows businesses to plant a

Gold standard Community Based Verified

tree on behalf of their customers. The

Carbon reduction Projects

customer can choose from the projects

Americas Portfolio of Verified Carbon

available and they will receive an email with

Reduction Projects

a certificate to confirm that we have planted

And the great news is, we purchased 5x more than our actual calculated CO 2 emissions. This means that Chinneck Shaw Limited is a Carbon Neutral PLUS organisation. (the PLUS comes from offsetting more than your footprint).

OUR GREEN PLEDGE We promise to plant a tree for every house

CULTURE ALERT? Emma Beatty

A

s Portsmouth is being identified as a “Priority Place” for culture by Arts Council England, one of its oldest cultural treasures goes on show: a grand silver banqueting cup made in 1525, the Bodkin Cup. It used to be in a dimly lit cabinet in the lord mayor’s chambers at The Guildhall but is now the centre of an exhibition at the City Museum until February 2023 to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The Bodkin Cup was owned by Francis Bodkin, three-times mayor of Portsmouth around the time of the Mary Rose . It has a border of spiky pineapples and a proudly Pompey Latin inscription “If God be for us, who can be against us?”. Also on view are two silver 1683 flagons and a 1965 silver-plated model of HMS Victory made of copper taken from the original ship.

phenomenon”. Strongly influenced by Dada and the German Expressionists, the human face and figure are the central motifs, however, over time, the building up of layers of collage, paint and ink “may also suggest deeper narratives”. Also part of PortsFest, Art Space collage artist Kate Street has a free workshop in the Cascades shopping centre where you can make your own ‘situationist map’ of our everintriguing city streets, Saturday afternoon 2 July.

More hidden artistic treasures are at Art Space studios 2-3 July which opens its doors for its annual Summer Open. This converted church tucked away off Elm Grove houses some 30 artists, working on everything from ceramics, to giant oil canvases, to sculpture and film. Have a peek around their many and varied studios and buy some unique works of art. As part of PortsFest (see p.26) Jack House Gallery on the High Street has work by Art Space artist Colin Merrin 6-20 July. And finally, Portsmouth Kite Festival is back 30-31 July – I don’t think I need to describe it for you, I’m just so pleased it’s back. Culture alert? I think we’re not doing too badly – but best not let the Arts Council know that…

Also at the NTR, is Mr Soft himself, Steve Harley 9 June with an acoustic set covering his eclectic lyrical talents from ‘Make Me Smile’ to ‘Judy Teen’. There’s more ‘80s nostalgia at the NTR with ‘80s Jazz Funk chart band Shakatak 17 June. Bill Sharpe’s famous keyboards will tinkle along to the soaring sounds of Jill Saward (lead vocals, percussion and flute, no less). If all that is too low-brow for you, then get tickets for lugubrious novelist Will Self who’s doing a reading at the Groundlings Theatre 30 June.

ART FOR AFGHANISTAN

rt for Afghanistan hopes to create a fun event where three professional artists will share their expertise and advice as you choose either a morning or afternoon session (or both) to try out your drawing skills. Everyone is welcome whatever you think your experience may be. There will be numerous choices of subjects to study and draw, in and around this incredible Victorian Gothic building. Maybe the surrounding trees or flowers will provide inspiration or one of the many stainedglass windows? Not only will you be able to try your hand at art and discover that the creative process is truly absorbing and fun, you will also be able to enjoy a delicious cream tea! All proceeds from the day will go to Save The Children’s Afghanistan Crisis Appeal, and the suggested donation is £7.50 per session.

This event will be held at St. Simon’s Church, Waverley Road, Southsea PO5 2PW on Saturday 25th June The first session will start promptly at 10am–12pm and the second session from 1–3pm the cream teas will be served from 12–1pm. All materials will be provided. Tickets will be available from Saint Simon’s Church Office at the beginning of June or on the door on the day (subject to availability). 1,000 YEARS HIKE

orth by north west. No, not the 1959 Hitchcock thriller, but that’s the direction Southsea’s Allan Jack will be heading in a couple of weeks’ time. Alan has signed up with 15 other friends and family of the late Stuart Fraser to walk the 96 miles of the West Highland Way, from Milngavie to Fort William, to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK. The hikers call themselves “Stu’s Band of Brothers”, and they have been undergoing training for what will be something of a challenge. For Allan, the local Nuffield Sports Centre has been a second home for him, regularly participating in swimming and cycling classes.

“When the West Highland Way was mentioned a few months ago, it didn’t really appeal,” he says. “But when it was decided to do it in memory of Stuart and to raise funds for such an important charity, I had no hesitation in signing up.” “We’re all exiled Scots from Dundee – apart from Stuart’s brother Garry – and each of us moved south in the 1970s.

42

We all got together through one of the exiles, Stuart’s closest friend Ian Crighton. Before long, there were regular social events, football matches and trips to Wimbledon. I moved to Southsea in 2001, but we all kept in touch with a yearly Christmas reunion in London. “We shall no doubt have few aches and pains after the walk, but these won’t last. What will last are our memories of Stuart and his fighting spirit throughout his illness. It’s an honour to walk in his memory and raise funds for a hugely important charity. “We call the walk the 1,000 Years Hike as that’s cumulative total of our ages,” Allan continues, “so as we’re rather long in the tooth, it’s going to be a tough six days. But with Stuart watching over our shoulders, the inspiration will be there from start to finish. When we get to Fort William, we’ll raise a glass, or two, to our dear friend.”

The SCO is a small and informal group that meets on Albert Road on Wednesday evenings. We are actively seeking orchestral players to join the group on all classical instruments. There are no fees at all associated with the group and all music is provided. Players must be able to sight-read classical repertoire as the music is often chosen on the night and changes each week. We play anything from Bach through Beethoven to Rachmaninoff and Ravel. The players may choose any music to play as we can print what we don’t already have in our enormous library. Amateur conductors are welcome to enquire as this is a fantastically flexible opportunity to lead a wide range of music. We do not perform concerts and play purely for enjoyment and practice. Please enquire via email and tell us your instrument(s) for more information: southseachamberorchestra@gmail.com

SHERLOCK HOLMES SOLVING THE DIAMOND MYSTERY

T

rust is key when purchasing a diamond. It can be one of the most important and significant purchases you might make. Therefore, Barbara Tipple jewellers has invested in the most advanced diamond tester available, which is actually called the ‘Sherlock Holmes tester’. It can detect whether a diamond is lab grown or mined.

Lab grown diamonds are being mass produced in countries all over the world, including Russia and China, and consequently are dropping in price, but they have very little resale value.

The Sherlock Holmes is 100% accurate. Barbara Tipple will test every diamond that you purchase in front of you. We also offer the service for any diamond you have bought elsewhere that you are unsure about, a single stone or multiple diamonds in an eternity ring for Yehuda Sherlock Holmes example. We will only test diamond tester this piece in front of you. You must make an appointment for this service.

Since winning her first Diamonds International Award in 1973 Barbara has gained huge experience in buying and assessing diamonds. She specialises in unusual cuts. Every stone is chosen for its beauty.

Mined diamonds are becoming scarcer because there is less mining, they are increasing in price, and support people who depend on the mining industry for an income.

Increasingly, unscrupulous dealers are selling lab grown diamonds with GIA certificates. Each natural diamond comes with a GIA certificate number which is also lasered onto the girdle of the diamond, Crooks will remove this and laser the same number onto a lab grown diamond then re certificate the original stone. Similarly, diamond ring manufacturers may introduce lab grown diamonds alongside natural diamonds by putting a percentage of small lab grown diamonds into the ring alongside the real ones. Lab grown diamonds use an outstanding amount of energy to recreate the environment in which natural diamonds are made when they grow deep within the earth’s mantle. This involves a lot of heat, energy and pressure – and creates an enormous amount of CO2. 44

NEW LEADERSHIP EXECUTIVES FOR PORTSMOUTH CREATES

P

Portsmouth Creates helps improve cultural prospects in the area

ortsmouth Creates, the CIC cultural catalyst company behind the hugely successful We Shine Portsmouth, is delighted to announce two new members joining its executive team – Louise Wilders and Claire Looney. Louise and Claire will be fulfilling the role of Chief Executive jointly, through a shared appointment, with both bringing a wealth of professional experience to the position.

46

Portsmouth Creates anticipates that this combined leadership role will accelerate its strategic work across the city, to support artistic development and creative growth as well as continuing to facilitate ground-breaking collaborative projects. Louise's depth of knowledge and understanding of Portsmouth communities and the not-for-profit sector from her previous role of founding Chief Officer of The Hive Portsmouth combined with Claire’s experience of strategic working within the

city’s cultural sector, will help Portsmouth Creates build on its initial success and deliver the vision for the organisation to improve cultural access and participation across all the city’s communities. With Portsmouth being identified as a Priority Place by Arts Council England, and Southampton being shortlisted as a potential City of Culture, there is now a significant opportunity for Portsmouth Creates to help improve cultural prospects in the area and deliver better recognition of the value of Cultural and Creative Industries across the Solent LEP region as part of the post-pandemic ‘Build Back Better’ programme. Chair of Portsmouth Creates Tim Rusby says “We are truly delighted to be able to welcome two such talented and well-respected professionals to the organisation, to help lead us in writing the next exciting chapter of Portsmouth Creates’ story and fulfilling its role as an independent catalyst for creative and cultural opportunities across our great city. “The success of recently delivered projects such as the We Create creative markets and the phenomenal We Shine Festival in November 2021 has been due entirely to the hard work and selfless commitment of the amazing but tiny team

here at Creates and our incredibly supportive partners. With Claire and Louise now working with us, we hope to dramatically expand the range of collaborative projects that we can help enable, support, and nurture for the communities of Portsmouth”. Victorious Festival Director, James Ralls added “I am very pleased with the appointment of Louise Wilders and Claire Looney as joint CEO of Portsmouth Creates. The Creates team have done an amazing job throughout the pandemic and these new appointments will help grow this good work, as well as develop in interesting new directions post-pandemic. Victorious Festival will be delighted to continue its investment in these capable hands, and I very much look forward to seeing the positive impact the appointments will have on our creative and cultural sectors”. Louise and Claire will be working alongside Portsmouth Creates’ Head of Projects, Billie Coe, from May, and will be initially developing a summer programme, supporting board growth and enabling more creative collective opportunities including the hopeful return of We Shine 2022. 47
