Southsea LIFESTYLE
Does every spring feel as though its been such a long time coming? Maybe it’s the unusual cold snaps in our normally mild coastal climate that seem to have assailed us all winter? Or maybe it’s the continual reports about the cost of living, energy prices, or the various political shenanigans that have made us weary? Either way, I’m looking forward to putting my overcoat at the back of the wardrobe and growing some pansies in my window box. I’m not the only person, it seems, to be looking forward to ‘the warm winds of spring and summer’, Neil Maxwell (p.14). And Daniel Nowland has spotted some ‘little teasers of spring in the air’ (p.36).
Daniel goes on to talk about his travels to Greece and its tasty cuisine, which sounds amazing and restorativet, but at the moment I’d just be happy with a warm sunny day on Southsea Beach.

alice and ivy
Sometimes a journey starts in the smallest of ways. For me, it started with a vivid purple eyeshadow in my mum’s makeup bag circa 1975, and a jar of Ponds Cold Cream kept on a bathroom shelf. Next came a Girls’ World in Christmas 1978. Followed by a Vogue Beauty Book with mini makeup kit.
My interest in makeup, skincare, wellbeing, and all things beauty started at a young age, and has been a consistent thread in my life. My dream was to open a shop that
sold great products, smelt wonderfu,l and would be a fun and welcoming place for people to come to for advice and to feel great about themselves.
However, a corporate career beckoned and so for nearly 30 years that was my main focus, but I kept taking those small steps, training as a beauty therapist through evening classes and doing makeup for weddings and photo shoots. And the dream of opening that shop just wouldn’t go away.
8
Then, in 2021, I decided that it was time to take a big step (well more of a jump into the unknown), and make that dream a reality. alice and ivy was born. I am so lucky to work with my alice and ivy family, Keeley and Emma, and together we bring expertise, warmth and energy to everything from brand and product selection, to giving advice, treatments, and private makeup events.
We put our clients at the heart of everything we do – picking products that really work (from independent brands that champion organic, clean ingredients and support the environment), providing advice and support, and delivering a curated menu of treatments that we really excel at.
The next stage of our journey in April will see the launch of our new website which will have
more of the hints, tricks and tips we want to share, how-to guides, product info and recommendations, guest blogs, as well as a great online booking system. Follow us on Instagram or Facebook for our latest news, promotions and tips!
We’re very excited about the launch of the new website, but we still love our bricks and mortar home, where you can try out our wide range of products, smell the wonderful scents and, meet the team. Pop by and say hello.

EVERYTHING’S OK, BUT WE MIGHT HAVE A PROBLEM
Neil Maxwell
Its a been a strange couple of months in the housing market with so much of the media telling us the sky is about to fall in. And yet there haven’t been any noticeable signs of falling prices in our area and again, there are so many contradictory reports from various outlets, it must be impossible for a bystander to draw any firm conclusions.
Sentiment and confidence are the foundations of the housing market, and if enough people are telling you there’s going to be a problem, a problem is created, and yet, as I say, we’re not seeing that on the shop floor. In fact, contrary to these reports, many of the sales we are concluding, are not below market value. It’s true there are fewer potential buyers looking, but we are still agreeing sales and listing new properties for sale.
If you have a good deposit, mortgage interest rates have fallen from the highs we saw before Christmas to more reasonable levels, and at the time of writing there are Buy to Let rates around 3.5–3.89% with a 25% deposit (source: moneysupermarket.com), making investment purchases still a realistic
option, particularly with rents on the increase, mainly due to lack of availability of homes for rent.
There has been a large influx of rental enquiries from overseas recently, chasing fewer available properties, so there is a definite need for more homes. In recent years there has been a definite trend of tenants remaining in their properties longer, and without any sign of this changing, the knock-on effect means, naturally, a shortage of supply.
As I’ve commented previously, the amount of new building which is going to be required to keep pace with demand, both for the rental market and owner occupation, is huge, hence Portsmouth City Council’s schemes to redevelop areas such as the Northern Quarter providing a further two thousand homes in the city, plus the new site at Tipner. We are going to have to innovate and make some difficult decisions in order to keep up with demand.
I am sure, like me–you are looking forward to the end of what seems to have been a very bleak winter and seeing what the warms winds of spring and summer bring to our shores.

AN UNEXPECTED WINDFALL
Words: Kate Thompson.
As soon as you walk into Mark and Jan Taylor’s super stylish Southsea flat, you can tell it has been a much loved home for many years.
The couple are the perfect mix of ingenuity and know-how combined with a great eye for a midcentury bargain. Their choice of furniture and lighting sit perfectly in the light and airy ground floor flat they have remodeled to perfection. Jan brushes off any attempts to flatter regarding her choice of furniture but will concede that she and Mark work well together. Often they have picked up great pieces online but, all too often she has grabbed a bargain in a market or second
hand shop and Mark has breathed new life into it.
The garden, which wraps around the property in a series of tantalising spaces, proved invaluable during the pandemic. Their grandchildren love to feed the squirrels in the shadow of what must be Southsea’s most spectacular mmosa tree.
And on the other side of the property is a garden space complete with bar, spectacular seating area, and pizza oven which makes a fantastic entertainment area. Although, Jan laughs, her sister Bev always says it’s such a sociable garden with the two most unsociable people.
cont’d p.24
23
Mark can turn his hand to just about anything and Jan has been a willing accomplice, picking up many skills along the way.
“Jan and I have done everything ourselves, and being able to do that has meant we could be more adventurous in what we have done,” said Mark.
For most of his working life, Mark looked after the estate of a well-known Southsea property owner called Sadie Howe.
“My father looked after them before me and when I was 15, I joined him, and Sadie continued to run all 37 flats until the day she died,” explained Mark.
Imagine his surprise when he learned upon her death that Sadie had left him not just the flat that he lived in, but the entire property with another two flats above stating in her will it was for all his tremendous hard work over the years.
She so kindly left all the other properties to charity, and stipulated that Mark was to retain his job looking after the other 34 properties, which he continues to do, to this day.
Mark and Jan moved into the flat which they still call home and have enjoyed up-dating the properties interior/exterior for the past six years since inheriting it.
With retirement beckoning, the couple are looking to sell the block as an investment property, and are looking for a property they can leave their mark on once again.
“We’ve decorated so many times over the years and changed quite a bit, with the input and knowledge from sisters Gina and Bev, now it’s time to look for a new challenge”.

CHINNECK SHAW OPENS NEW SOUTHSEA OFFICE
After several years of waiting to find the perfect premises, Chinneck Shaw is looking forward to opening its new office in a stylish Southsea neighbourhood. Associate Director Lizzie Burt, explained the lure of Castle Road had been strong owing to its location, history, architecture and a host of independent businesses.
“We were keen to tap into the independent vibe of Castle Road in Southsea and began looking in earnest a
couple of years ago for the right shop to become available.
“And now we are delighted to say that No 65 will be our new Southsea home, complimenting the work of our Copnor office and expanding our geographical reach.”
The team can’t wait to be rubbing shoulders with the likes of nationally recognised quirky record store Pie and Vinyl, David Western bridal gowns, Tony Wood Hairdressers, CW Framing and
26
well known artist Pete Codling as well as a host of lovely eateries.
“As an independent company ourselves we feel we are in good company in Castle Road and the welcome we have received has been really warm,” she said.
The iconic clock tower, captured by talented artist Kevin Dean for this article, is a Southsea landmark and just one of many captivating buildings in the area.
“We love the varied architecture and style that can be found in this particular part of Southsea.
“And we look forward to working with home owners and families wanting to enjoy some of the Southsea vibe,” said Lizzie.
Portsmouth has recently been named the UK’s second coolest city to live by the Nomads Nation website and predominantly that will be down to the relaxed lifestyle you can enjoy in Southsea.
“Chinneck Shaw was established in 1883 and as we mark 140 years of trading, it seems fitting that we should open our new premises in Southsea.
“We will be bringing our independent spirit to this bustling street of like-minded businesses and we truly can’t wait to be in such great company,” added Lizzie.

BREATHE NEW LIFE INTO YOUR KITCHEN
If your kitchen is looking tired, or you want to give it a new look, you no longer have to go to the expense of fitting a brand new kitchen and sending your old kitchen to land fill. Or trying to apply paint to difficult kitchen surfaces. Instead, simply have your cupboard doors and worktops ‘wrapped’ in architectural film. It’s good for the environment and good for your pocket.
Gone are the days when wrapping was exclusive to vehicles; architectural films have opened up a wealth of design possibilities. With 1000’s of patterns and finishes to choose from, Wrapt Interiors, can refresh an entire room, inexpensively and with the minimum of disruption. There’s no need to
28
remove existing substrates and the films can be applied in situ without the use of heavy equipment, dust or noise. Providing an authentic natural look, the films are resistant to water, dirt, abrasion and mould.
And don’t feel as though you have to be restricted to flat surfaces, architectural film can conform to almost any surface, flat or curved. ‘We’ve wrapped walls, furniture, ceilings, lifts, doors and even the occasional fridge, both in the home, or in restuarants and offices. We are really excited about what we do and the possibilities are endless’ explained Ben Morris director of Wrapt. 2023 SWEAT FITNESS FESTIVAL
Luke Newton
Over the years I’ve been grateful to advertise and sporadically write for Southsea Lifestyle. It’s been a while, but I couldn’t be more excited to be back here in-print ahead of the return of the Sweat Fitness Festival and I’m thankful to Southsea Lifestyle for their support as one of our media partners.
Wagamama and The Alchemist. The Festival continues its mission to provide a platform for local businesses, teams, and fitness instructors, and we have our most varied stage line-up yet.
The Festival A-Z is something else…
Aerial Dance, Bounce Fit, Cold Water Immersion, Floating Mindfulness, Hyperice Recovery Zone, Live DJs, Mindset coaching, Street Dance, Tai Chi, TRX Workshops and Workouts, Yoga, Zumba, and much more to experience and try out over the weekend.
We will be releasing the schedule via our newsletter, and then our social channels in early April. For now, save the date and we’ll hope to see you on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th of April. The Festival remains free to attend!
The event traces its roots back to 2015. The ‘Southsea Fitness Festival’ took over Castle Field each summer with the simple aim of inspiring and celebrating active lifestyles. Between 2015 and 2019 we welcomed thousands of people to one of the first Fitness Festivals in the UK, and the only one that was free to attend. The event grew significantly each year, and we have so many great memories.
In 2021 with just a few weeks to prepare, we ran a pilot event at Gunwharf Quays — it proved a big success — one we couldn’t have achieved without the support of our local network and fitness community. And now, we’re counting down the days to what is shaping up to be the highest-profile Sweat Fitness Festival yet. We will be joined by internationallyrecognised fitness brands, including TRX and Hyperice, and Gunwharf Quays partners such as
A special thank you to our host venue, Gunwharf Quays, for their support in our quest to inspire active lifestyles in our community and beyond.

CHOOSING A DIAMOND
Barbara Tipple
When choosing a diamond, it is important to have the help of an experienced manufacturing jeweller who will guide you through the many pitfalls.
Recently, Barbara Tipple acquired on consignment three ‘identical’ diamonds from our reputable diamond cutters. One diamond from Antwerp, and two from London. Each weighing 2cts and all E Vs2 quality. All the same?... No. Only one of the diamonds was amazing, the ‘make’ was so superior that it far outshone the others in brilliance and diameter. The client saw this immediately.
Our diamonds are cut and polished in Antwerp. The diamond cutters there are renowned for the finest proportion and polish. This is very important for the brilliance of the diamond. All of our diamonds are hand chosen to ensure you get the very finest diamond from ethical sources.
Transparency is very important when purchasing a diamond. All imported rough diamond material must follow the Kimberly process. A commitment followed to remove conflict diamonds from the supply chain, whilst maintaining a stringent ethical focus when removing the rough diamonds from the ground.
Lab-grown diamonds are not as ethical as first marketed. They have a massive carbon footprint just to be made. They are being produced in such large quantities that the price to purchase has dropped from minus 50% of natural diamonds to minus 98%. They are no longer a luxury product.
Knowledge is key when making such an important purchase. Visit Barbara Tipple in Marmion Road or their new Petworth gallery where it will be their pleasure to assist you in choosing the perfect diamond for you and your loved one.

PASSION FOR GREECE
Words: Daniel Nowland
I’m writing this feature at a time when some little teasers of spring are in the air, and hopefully we’ve seen the back of what’s felt like a very long, cold winter. It’s funny how in the early spring, those little spells of sunshine feel so special and a cup of tea on a bench in the garden can feel euphoric.
which has stayed with me ever since.
Visitors to my deli often ask why we have so many Greek items in the store, and the answer is simply “because I love them”.
This spring, I am lucky enough to be taking a short holiday in Greece. It is a country that holds a special place in my heart. My grandparents retired there in the 80’s and I’ve enjoyed frequent holidays there ever since, thanks to our small family home in the Peloponnese. This region is a little known gem, as it is part of mainland Greece, but looks and feels like one big Greek Island. As it’s off the main tourist map, it is sparsely populated, quiet all year, and cheap to visit.
It was during these frequent trips as a child that I developed a real passion for Greek food,
In the deli we sell stuffed vine leaves, traditional spinach pies known as “spanakopita”, and our most popular cake is our Greek orange cake,
36
known as “portokalopita”, a recipe perfected by my mum during her time working with me. We even sell Greek beers — which taste best when drunk on sunny days.
Greek food is often underrated, as countries such as Italy and Spain have been better at promoting their national dishes to the Brits. Traditional Greek cooking will vary depending on the region and the season. In the Peloponnese you will find a lot of local lamb and goat on Taverna menus, as the rocky mountainous terrain favours these nimble
animals. Beef cattle are nowhere to be seen in the region, as these animals need flatter land, as found in the north. Of course, being surrounded by the sea, the fish is incredibly fresh, and often the octopus would have been caught the same day.
My favourite dishes include various salads (usually piled high with feta), simple boiled vegetables drowned in the freshest olive oil and lemon juice, and aromatic meat stews cooked with tomato, bay, oregano, and plenty of red wine. The food is simple, made brilliant by the freshness of the vegetables and the abundance of extra virgin olive oil.
It can be difficult to re-create this experience back home in Southsea, but I regularly give it a good go at our Greek supper clubs. Every alternate supper club I host is Greek in theme, as it is my primary passion. These are a great opportunity for me to share my passion for the style of cooking and hospitality, and also introduce guests to some surprisingly good Greek wines!

LOCAL HEROES
Jim Harbridge of Herbies Health Store talks about their increasing range of local products
‘Although we stock a large selection of health foods and products by major suppliers, we also take a pride in selling goods from local producers, from coffee, cashew snacks, chocolate, vegan cup cakes and pies and even vegan crackling – all made in and around Portsmouth,’ explained Jim. ‘Some of our local suppliers are very small, Oshi for example is a young man who keeps 4 hens, that lay about boxes of eggs a week. While other producers are continually developing, Spice Island chilli sauces, are well known in the city, they started in a small way, but now sell their products all over the UK. Another popular local brand is Oud Island, producing uni-sex natural perfumes, which have been endorsed by sports stars and celebrities. Or how about Bubblehead Barista, who supply us with coffee (both beans and ground), sold in a reuse-able, re-fillable cartons. While Southsea Chocolate only use cocoa from sustainable suppliers, with packaging that’s fully recyclable.
Looking ahead, we are keen to begin selling organic fruit and veg and working with local suppliers as far as possible.
I love finding good quality, sustainable local products and customers love to support local manufacturers. It’s also something that distinguishes us from supermarkets who rarely stock products in their locality, but with so much concern over food miles and wasteful packaging, this may well be something that changes in time. I like to think we are leading the way’, said Jim with a smile.

ROBIN EVANS 50 YEARS AT NESBITS
My ex-naval father having made the introduction on my behalf, I joined the firm in February 1973, at the princely salary of £7 per week.
I found my duties taking a rapid and unexpected trajectory, the “office junior” taking on responsibility for handling the firm’s lettings and residential sales following the departure of long-standing employees within just months of my arrival.
Happily, my juggling of house sales with the preparation of inventories and the like ended after a few years, leaving me to focus solely on all things property related.
My well-thumbed personal archive, reminds me of my very first house sale – a threebedroom home in Claydon Avenue (still Milton at that time) sold for £9,750.
As a sharp illustration of bricksand-mortar inflation (and of property as an investment), the same archive shows a twobedroom Seafront flat having been sold in 1974 for £14,000, going on to be sold by me again some 46 years later for a twentyfold uplift.
1000s of transactions over 50 years have included many highlights, Southsea Seafront providing particularly fertile territory, a walk along Eastern Parade allowing me to identify around half its housing stock as having gone through my hands at some time.
I am often asked how the world of property has changed over half a century. “Much and little” is the answer. The advent, and subsequent dramatic expansion, of the internet has brought about a transformation in the way property is marketed and sold, but, and to oft-voiced frustration, the essential workings
of the buying/selling system remains little altered.
I readily confess to offering younger listeners (nearly everyone!) of my opinion that “this job was a lot more straightforward back in the day”. A somewhat rosetinted perspective, but with a strong element of truth. Certainly bureaucracy, in its many manifestations, held less of a grip than is the case today.
I regret never acting on those occasions when observing that I should keep a diary of interactions with the public. Had I done so I would have a record of those many incidents that the job has thrown up, most now lost to a rather unreliable memory (not, let me assure current clients, age-related).
One event is recalled, and this after a gap of 40-odd years: I can still see the look on the face, and the utter dismay in the voice, of the buyer who, having previously collected the keys to his investment purchase, returned in a whirlwind of anger to inform me that “they (the sellers) have stolen my doorknobs!”
As to the future? I continue to immensely enjoy the work I do, my enthusiasm for the Portsmouth property scene being undimmed. With sufficient evidence of appreciation and respect from both the public and fellow professionals, I am happy to keep going.
LOOK BACK TO 1973:
The average cost of a house was just over £9000
The cost of a first class stamp was 3p
The best-selling car of 1973 was the Ford Cortina MkIII
The cost of a gallon of petrol was 39p
The cost of a pint of beer was 14p.
