Greetings from the GM June is in the rearview mirror, but there is plenty of summer left at Salina Country Club! We are all very excited about the great events still to come this summer…make sure you don’t miss out on all that’s available at your club. July 3rd and 4th celebrations are going to be a blast, with food, fun, and fireworks! I know I’m looking ahead a little bit, but my favorite event from last summer, the Cardboard Boat Regatta is just around the corner and the Adult Party at the Pool is coming up quickly as well. This is also a very exciting time for Salina Country Club on the staffing side. I’m sure by now you’ve all heard the great news about Randy Syring accepting the Head Coaching position at KWU. We’re all thrilled for Randy and even happier that he is going to continue on at Salina Country Club as our Director of Golf. Rob Carlson will get the continued benefits of Randy’s experience and he can’t wait to begin to put his stamp on the Golf Operation. On a different floor of the Club, Julie Schott will begin transitioning from her Membership Sales position to focus on events-both outside and member. I like to think of her job title as Director of Fun, and I’m sure she won’t waste any time making sure you have some. A quick reminder that we expect the road work to commence shortly on Country Club Road. This will be a bit of an inconvenience, but there will always be one of our entrances open for you to make your way into either the upper or lower parking lot. Please be conscientious while you are driving, as the traffic pattern will change around the club based on the work going on. Thank you all for being members of Salina Country Club! It’s a very exciting time for our Club and I’m very grateful that you’ve chosen to join us! See you at the Club, Brad McMillan

SCC Leagues and Junior Golf will continue through July, along with a variety of fun golf events for everyone. On July 6th we have a Beat the Pros competition followed by a Couples 9 & Dine on the 28th. Our annual Wally Beets Classic will be held July 20 - 22. This year’s tournament will kick off on Thursday with a practice round and afternoon horse race. On Friday and Saturday, we will have our 2-man low ball competition. Spots are still available so call the Pro Shop for more information. SCC Junior Golf takes place every Wednesday morning, and SCC Junior Sports is every Wednesday and Thursday. Sign ups for our sports program are still available, contact katlyndavis@troon.com for more details. Free beginner clinics for ladies will continue on Tuesday evenings at 5:30 pm through the month of July. No need to sign up ahead of time, just show up and enjoy 30 minutes of relaxed and fun golf instruction. Looking ahead to next month remember August is “Championship Month” at SCC, so make plans to play in your respective championships. They will be held on back to back weekends leading off with the Men’s Club Championship on August 19th & 20th, followed by the Women’s on the 26th & 27th. There are flights for everyone and Senior/Super Senior divisions in both events. Please call the Pro Shop for more information and sign up for any of these events. See you on the links.

Employee of the Month Kat Davis has been invaluable to the SCC

Summer Sports program. She did a great job creating a professional SCC Junior Summer Program Guide and has been instrumental in reaching out to parents and signing kids up. She has personally made sure that each kid is safe and has fun while they are here at the program. Kat brings creativity

and

enthusiasm to all of our kid’s programs here from Movie Nights to Summer Kick Off. I cannot wait to see what she does for the 3rd of July Party. Thank you, Kat, for all your hard work! If you know someone that shows this type of dedication to the Club, nominate them for next month!

The Setup

Summer is in full swing and so is the club. Chef Eric and his team have taken advantage of the season’s flavors and updated the menu to bring you more of their culinary creations. I will be working on a few new specialty cocktails over the next couple weeks and look forward to making them for your enjoyment. It was a pleasure to cater for the Smoky Hill River Festival Premier Party and we look forward to bringing this event the best food in town again next year. The Salina Charities League Annual Golf Tournament was a success, especially the new Thursday evening activities. We can’t wait until next year so we may continue elevating this event to the best it can possibly be. Our Juniper & Gin tasting was our best turnout yet and I am looking forward to the next tasting event on August 24th. Next time we will feature cordials that you may have never tried before. Keep an eye on the club calendar for more upcoming events and be sure to join us for the 3rd of July Party this month! Enjoy the good times!

Chris’s Comments

Happy 4th of July! It seems like the summer is flying by! So far the weather has been typical for Kansas, hot then cool then storms then hot again, it is a true roller coaster ride living in the mid-west. The lack of moisture is starting to take a toll on the course and the irrigation system. Some of the fairway sprinkler heads were not operating correctly causing some trouble spots. We have since fixed the sprinklers and applied a wetting agent to those dry areas to help them recover. The staff is doing a great job keeping the greens in good shape during the summer heat. They have been using moisture meters and only hand watering where it is needed to conserve water. Nowadays, golf courses are staying conscious of how much water is used and are careful not to waste any by overwatering. Overwatering is not good for the turf health either; it can cause disease and “bake” the plant when temperatures reach 100 degrees. Having a warm season grass, like our Zoysia fairways, also saves water on the course. As a result, we are planning to convert #12 and #14 from Bermuda to Zoysia this coming February. At the end of this month we will start killing these Bermuda fairways along with #10 in preparation. The process will be similar to what we did with #6 and #11 last year and hopefully with the same results. Those three fairways will be dead over the winter and in February we will remove the old dead grass and replace it with Zoysia grass. We plan to start spraying the last Monday in July and will probably make 5 or 6 applications to get a good kill. If anyone has any questions about this process or any other issues please stop by and ask, I truly do appreciate your feedback. Thank you.

Salina Country Club | July 2017

In the Kitchen Hello everyone, June was a great month for the club! I would like to say thank you to all that made the Salina Charities League Annual Golf Tournament was a huge success. I had a wonderful time helping plan the event. I can’t wait to get started on the planning process for next year! We also hosted a Beer and Bugs tasting last month that was really fun! Thank you to all the members who attended. The month of July has a lot of events that we are looking forward to at SCC! Our popular 3rd and 4th of July events will be taking place the first week of the month. Make sure to grab your wrist bands for the 3rd of July Party now and enjoy the activities! On July 13th of this month, we will bring back our Pasta Night, reservations are now available so come out to try our delicious pasta options. Also for all that are interested, I will help host the 2nd annual Feast on the Fe in September. For all those who are unfamiliar, Feast on the Fe is an event organized by Salina citizens to showcase local farm resources and the farm to fork movement in our area. Our intent is to provide Salina with the information and the inspiration to eat local and increase public awareness of sustainable agriculture. Admission will be through the Salina Chamber. The event will take place on the 100 block of S. Santa Fe, just like the year prior. This year we are partnering with Friday Night Live to help push the event even further with entertainment. Please be patient as we come together for planning over the next month. More information will be available soon. I hope your summer break is going as planned! Take care, Chef
