Greetings from the GM! I always look forward to the Independence Day Celebrations here at Salina Country Club, despite the fact that I have to get a perfectly good suit wet! We have some new activities and games planned for the 3rd and I’ve been assured that the fireworks display will be longer and more spectacular than last year. The July 4th Tennis Tournament has been tweaked slightly and should be fun for everyone. Greg and his team down at the pool have some great games planned as well. Coming out to the Club will be the perfect way to celebrate! Events that you should be aware of: • • • • • •
July 3rd Celebration July 4th Events – Tennis and Pool SCC Family Night – July 14th Wally Beets Tournament – July 20th, 21st, 22nd SCC Junior Summer Graduation – July 27th Miss Jane’s Retirement Party – July 29th
On a sad note, Salina Country Club will be losing a treasured employee later this month. Jane Price will be retiring at the end of July. It is a well-earned rest, but I know that you all will miss her easy smile and bubbly personality as much as I will. We will be holding a goodbye party for her on July 29th at 2pm, so please make a point to come out and thank her for her service and dedication to your Club. There are some great things happening in July. I certainly hope that you are able to come out and take advantage of everything that your Club has to offer. Once again, thank you so much for choosing to be a Member of Salina Country Club! See you at the Club,
Brad McMillan
Ace in the Hole July is packed with fun golf activities for all ages. The month begins with our annual Flag Day celebration. Tuesday, July 3rd will be the “Firecracker” tournament, with a Par 3 Challenge beginning at 4:00 p.m., then on Wednesday, July 4th we will host our annual “Flag Tournament.” Participation in either or both of these events enters you in a drawing for chance to win a Red/White/Blue Titleist cart bag! SCC Leagues and Junior Golf will run full steam ahead through July, with a variety of other fun golf events for everyone. They include Beat the Pros on the 12th, with an additional $880 from the previous 2 months, and Couples 9 & Dine on the 28th. The Wally Beets Classic will be held July 20th, 21st, and 22nd. This year’s schedule will include a practice round and afternoon horse race on Friday, and then a 2-man low ball competition on Saturday and Sunday. Spots are still available so call the Pro Shop for more information. The SCC Summer Junior Golf program continues on Wednesday mornings in July, as well as the SCC Junior Sports on Wednesdays and Thursdays each week. Free beginner clinics for ladies will continue on Tuesday evenings at 5:30pm through the month of July. No need to sign up ahead of time, just show up and enjoy 30 minutes of relaxed and fun golf instruction. The Men’s and Women’s Club Championship qualifying rounds are in full swing. Both Men and Women will have until July 31st to complete their four (4) qualifying rounds. If you do not know how many rounds you have completed please do not hesitate to ask the Pro Shop and they will be happy to help you. These 4 rounds will be combined together to both flight and seed you within your flight. You will then have to play at least one (1) match between August 1st and Friday, August 17th for Men or Friday, August 24th for Women. Just a reminder all Flights are Match Play. Men’s Flights are Gross Match Play and the Women have a Net Flight. Please call the Pro Shop for more information and to sign up for any of these events. We hope to see you on the Golf Course!

July is normally the month when the hot and dry weather arrives, but this year it came in May and most of June! At the end of June we finally had some rain. It really helped the course bounce back. The course has been through a lot this year due to the extreme weather, and I can assure you we are doing everything possible to keep the course conditions the best we can. If it is not the weather, it is insects! We have recently found Billbugs in our fairways, and it has been confirmed by staff at Bayer. This is the reason some of the fairways have thin, yellow areas. I have sprayed and expect the fairways to recover soon. From now on we will spray a preventive spray every spring to solve this problem in the future. The other challenge is the rough, which unfortunately will have to be addressed this fall when we seed. The plan is to root-prune and control the roots that are part of the problem. The right sides of #3 and #9 are two examples. We also plan to aerify and add some soil amendments to aid the seed, and then hopefully we will get some good growing weather. This spring was not kind to the new seed we planted last fall, and with the dry long winter that went right into 90 degree temperatures the turf did not have a chance to establish roots and grow. All these issues will be addressed. For now we will continue to improve conditions for this year and the future. The crew and I will continue to aerify the tees, approaches, and fairways through the growing season. We also plan to trim some trees before Mother Nature does it for us! We will continue sodding bare areas throughout the course and make sure all the small details are addressed. Thank you!

Summer is here and the Country Club is in full swing! We are looking forward to some fantastic festivities on the 3rd of July. We will have plenty of outdoor seating, with a bounce house, face painting, and lots of other games for the kids. Don’t forget about the ever popular dunk tank! Take turns dunking your favorite club professional, and all proceeds will go to charity. Of course, we will have a beautiful fireworks show to finish off the night. On the 4th of July, the pool will be the place to be. Stop by the snack bar during the tennis tournament for a quick breakfast, which is a Texas staple that both Chef Eric and I brought with us from our time in the Lone Star State.
Hello everyone! Another hot month is crossed off the books. I would like to start off by saying thank you to everyone that attended the Summer Kick Off party. It was nice to see everyone (including some new faces) enjoy themselves at the party! I would also like to add that we had another successful Salina Charities League Tournament. It was a pleasure planning this event with the committee and executing their vision. I hope to make next year’s event even better! Attendance for the Father’s Day Cook Out was steady. I am looking for ideas to make Father’s Day a recharged celebration, so any and all input is welcome! Please feel free to email me at eshelton@troon.com. I would like to add that we implemented Rib Night for the membership this month! We served smoky baby back ribs, potato salad and French fried potatoes. Thank you to all that attended! Look for some exciting things coming up for July. The 4th of July Party will be great with a taco bar and sides. Relax with us and enjoy the festivities. I appreciate your patronage and hope to see you all soon!
