Greetings from the GM Summer is officially here! The kids are out of school, the pool is open, and things are heating up at Salina Country Club. May was a great month. Although cooler than normal, the Summer Kick Off was a big hit for kids of all ages, Tennis programming has begun, Golf is in high gear, and the Pool looks better than ever! There were some great culinary events during the month as well; the Memorial Day Cookout was very popular, Mother’s Day Brunch was quite a treat, and Chef has been cooking up a storm in the Kitchen. We’re all very excited for June as well. Tennis and the Pool will continue to ramp up with the weather. There are going to be some great golf events as well. On the events side, make sure you put the Father’s Day Cookout, Chef ’s Tasting Menu, and the Juniper Tasting on your calendar for the month. A couple of quick words on some things that I know you have questions about. First, with the Air Conditioning in the downstairs areas, we had a failure on one of the units. We are currently trying to assess the best way to address this problem. Unfortunately, none of the options are going to occur overnight. That being said, we have purchased some portable A/C units to try and keep you cool. Second, we expect the road work to commence shortly on Country Club Road. This will be a bit of an inconvenience, but there will always be one of our entrances open for you to make your way into either the upper or lower parking lot. Please be conscientious as you are driving, as the traffic pattern will change based on the work going on. Thank you all for being members of Salina Country Club! It’s a very exciting time for our Club and I’m very grateful that you’ve chosen to join us! See you at the Club, Brad McMillan

Randy’s Corner The summer portion of the SCC Junior Golf programs will begin on June 7th and continue through July. The SCC Summer Junior Golf Program includes weekly clinics covering swing and short game fundamentals, rules and etiquette, play on the course, and we are also a 1st Tee affiliate program! Also this season, for juniors, we’ve added the SCC Summer Sports. In Junior Sports, the kids will engage in golf, tennis, and swimming for 1 hour each. The Program is at 10:30 am on Wednesdays and Thursdays. All junior golf schedules and sign up forms are available at the Pro Shop. The month of June also includes the Salina Charities Invitational on June 15, 16, 17. Salina Country Club will also be hosting a Couples 9 & Dine on June 30, Men’s and Women’s league play, and a Kansas Cup match. Looking ahead to July, the Golf Course and Pro Shop will be open all day on Monday, July 3rd until evening festivities begin. The annual Flag Tournament will then be held on July 4th. All golfers can make their own tee times and pairings. It’s going to be another fun summer for golfers of all ages at SCC! As always, please let us know if we can do anything to enhance your golfing enjoyment. See you on the links. Randy

Employee of the Month Jay Timmons has worked at the Salina

Country Club for over 20 years and is retiring later this month. He deser ves employee of the month because of all the hard work he has put into the golf course to make it the best it could possibly be. Not only does he know everything about keeping up with the SCC course, he also is a fantastic team player and is always willing to help. He knows every hidden “treasure with the irrigation system off the top of his head. Jay will be missed by the crew and members, most of which he knows by name. The club has benefitted from his hard work and knowledge that cannot be replaced. If you know someone that shows this type of dedication to the Club, nominate them for next month

The Setup

What a fantastic month! Mother’s Day, Couples 9 & Dine, Summer Kick-Off, and our Memorial Day Cook Out were a success. And the pool and snack bar are open for the Summer! Thank you to all the members that took part in these events as the attendance was much greater than years before. Your continued support makes us want to make each and every event better and better. June 22nd will be the next date in our Tasting Series. We are featuring juniper liquors and I am looking forward to having Grant come out and speak about the five gins that we have selected for you to try. We will start the tasting at 6:00 pm and will have Prime Rib as a special that evening. Make your reservation for the tasting and join us for dinner afterward. June is also Charites month. If you are playing in the tournament this year we look forward to offering a Par 3 contest paired up with a Grill & Chill and live music with a Break the Glass Competition on Thursday the 16th to make this an even better weekend. We look forward to seeing many of you there. Couples 9 & Dine will finish out the month strong as Chef will be preparing an Italian themed buffet dinner and I will be passing out Peach Bellinis on the course to all that participate. Steven

Chris’s Comments

June is here and hopefully, it will bring some warmer weather. The golf course could sure benefit from some warm temperatures, especially the fairways including the new sod on #1 and the red tee on #10.

We are seeing a lot of growth in both the zoysia and Bermuda. The fairways on #12 and #14 are recovering from the cooler April weather and should be a good playing surface in the next couple of weeks. We have been fertilizing those fairways to give them a little bit of a jump-start. When the fairways are ready, I will change the cart policy to stay in the fairway and out of the rough as much as possible when you leave the cart path. This month is the time when we are fully staffed and we can make sure all daily maintenance items are getting checked and that the course is at its best. I am lucky in the fact that all but one staff member is returning from last summer, so we can hit the ground running. I am sad to say that Jay is retiring this month. Jay has been working at the club for over 20 years and knows this irrigation system like the back of his hand. Jay is the type of guy you cannot replace, he will be missed here at the Salina Country Club. Some of the projects that we are planning for this summer include sodding the fairway line on the left side of #6 and trimming and removing trees. We plan on staying on track with the tree trimming, there are many places the trees are overhanging to the point of almost touching the carts. As of now, we have a goal to eliminate all bare ground, the crew is actively sodding bare areas to help this process. Daily tasks and tournaments make the weeks fly by and before you know it, the summer will be over. Keep in mind I always have time to answer any questions you might have so feel free to stop and ask.

In the Kitchen Hello, everyone! Summer has officially begun and we are super excited to play with some new vegetables and change things up a bit in the dining room and Johnny’s. I would like to say Happy belated Mother’s Day to all that I didn’t come into contact with during brunch. Thank you for your patronage and we look forward to seeing you again next year. The Snack Bar is fully operational and seems to be extremely busy already! Keep an eye out for all of our fun summer food events we will be hosting. In the upcoming months, we are looking at hosting a “Bugs and Beer” crawfish boil either pool side or on Johnny’s Patio. Summer Kick-Off was a little cooler than expected, but we were still able to have an amazing turnout versus the years before. I hope you were all able to enjoy the food, kid activities and our fun fireworks show. June looks like it will be a busy 30 days for the kitchen. We will be hosting a Tasting, Salina Charities, and also the Smoky Hill Festival Oakdale Park. In addition to the menu, we will be rolling out a new Prix-Fixe menu the first week of the month and the inspiration is Strawberries. Each course with has this familiar fruit incorporated into both our savory and sweet dishes. I hope you can make it out. Take Care Chef
