Memorial Day Golf Tournament

Greetings from the GM! May is finally here! Hopefully the gray days of April are behind us. We are all very excited about the upcoming month, with so much happening at the Club. Men’s and Ladies’ Golf Leagues began in April and will be full-steam ahead for the upcoming month. Rob has begun his Tuesday and Thursday Ladies Clinics as well. I hope you are able to come out and be a part of these fun and social golf events. Although our first Ladies Tennis Social was cancelled due to poor weather, you can expect many more to come. Everyone here is particularly looking forward to the special events coming up in May. First up is the traditional Mother’s Day Brunch. Let Mom know that you are thinking about her and enjoy some great food, with a special gift for all of those special ladies. Make sure you plan to be a part of the Summer Kick Off Party…a full day of fun and sun. Speaking of which, the pool will be open! I know that all of you are looking forward to another great year poolside. Keep an eye open for a fine dining event later in the month. Highlights that you should be aware of: Mother’s Day Brunch – May 13th Summer Kick Off – May 19th Tuesday and Thursday Free Ladies Golf Clinics Tennis Socials– May 9th & 23rd Chef’s Tasting – May 26th Junior Golf– After School Clinics through May 11th & Camp May 24th and 25th We hope to begin work on the Upper Deck Patio in the very near future, and think that it’s soon going to be your favorite spot at the Club. Once again, thank you so much for choosing to be a Member of Salina Country Club!

See you at the Club,

Brad McMillan

May is one of the best golf months of the year at SCC. Not only is it one of the best months for golf weather, the May golf calendar includes fun events for the whole family. Here are some of the highlights: May kicks off with Men’s League on May 9th, followed by Beat the Pros on May 10th. SCC will be hosting a couple of corporate events during the month of May: The Kansas Bankers Association Tournament on Friday May 11th, the Mitch Comfort Memorial Tournament on Friday May 18th, and the Community Bankers Tournament on Wednesday May 30th. The Ladies Golf Association will have their annual Women’s Member/ Member Tournament on May 22nd and 24th. The sign up form is in the Ladies’ Lounge, or just call the Pro Shop and we’ll add you to the list. Also for the ladies, we will continue our Tuesday and Thursday clinics at 5:30pm each week. The clinics are always fun, casual, and open to all lady SCC Members. On Memorial Day we will be premiering a new event. We will be starting a 2-Person Best Ball Event. We will have a number of flights, including Men’s Gross, Men’s Net, Women’s Gross, Women’s Net, Couple’s Gross, and Couple’s Net. You will make your own tee times and groups. Sign-ups for the tournament will be optional as you arrive that day. We will begin taking tee times for Memorial Day on Sunday, May 20th, beginning at 7:00 am, in person and by phone. May 19th is our Salina Country Club Summer Kick Off. There will be fun activities, contests, food and drinks. Make plans to attend, as this will be one of the best events of the year. We will also have sign-ups and schedules for all junior summer activities. The SCC Junior Golf Camp returns by popular demand on May 24th and 25th. Junior camp is for all levels of junior golfers and is a great opportunity for kids to get more one-on-one instruction. This will be open to SCC kids ages 5 and older. Sign up in the Pro Shop or call for more details. Summer Junior Golf schedules and program details will be available in the Pro Shop this month. The SCC Junior Golf program is open to all SCC juniors ages 5 and older. This year will include thorough instruction on swing, short game and etiquette. Returning this year is the very successful SCC Summer Sports for Juniors. This will include Golf, Tennis, Swimming and lunch on Wednesdays and Thursdays in June and July. Call us to sign up or for more details. I am looking forward to a great month of golf at SCC. As always, please let me know if there is anything my staff or I can do to help enhance your enjoyment of the club. We are looking forward to another great month at SCC!

This has definitely been an interesting spring so far. I hope May turns out to be much warmer. The soil temps are still low compared to last year, and as a result the areas that like warm weather (like tees and fairways) are just starting to show some color. The trees are still looking like January, with the exception of the willows. I always judge when to put out the pre-emergent by the blooming Redbuds, which are finally starting to show some pink color. As the warm weather finally comes around the golf course, we will be ready, and things will green up before we know it. That will also include the greens. We have had a couple holes that had some irrigation issues that have been resolved. With the lack of moisture, they are just taking their time to come around, but I am not worried. We have fertilized them in anticipation for aerification that will take place the first of the month. The plan during this process will not change. When the course opens, the greens will be very puttable, and will be back to normal a week or two after we finish. The crew has this process down to a science. As long as the weather cooperates, everything will go very smoothly. The fence project is also going well. We work on it every chance we get. The course maintenance will take priority for a few more weeks, but the fence will get done as soon as we can while still providing great playing conditions on the course. The crew has also been working on sodding the stumps that were removed, and doing a rain dance after each one is completed. The reason we are sodding these areas instead of seeding is because, in most cases, the plant would not mature enough to survive the heat of the summer. After the grass thins out, the weeds would take over and not provide a good lie. As I always say, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns please do not hesitate to stop by or email me if you think of something after your round. Hopefully Mother Nature helps us with nice sunny warm days and rainy nights... I think that is a pretty reasonable request! Thank you. —

Chris

Hello everyone! Welcome to the month of May here at SCC. We had a pretty eventful month in April with the beginning of many seasonal leagues and clinics. The Ladies’ Golf Dinner was the first event out of the gate to start the month, followed by Men’s Stag Night. Both events were fantastic! Pasta Night has shown steady attendance, and Stir Fry Night has also gained popularity. If there is any other “Specialty Night” you would like to see, please let my team know and I will make a plan to bring it to life. As the month progresses, we will be planning your Mother’s Day Brunch. Please make your reservations soon! The Summer Kick Off party is scheduled for May 19th. Come on down to the pool and enjoy the water, as well as food from the snack bar from the new revised menu. We will also be firing up the grill! It has been a while since we have had a Chef’s Tasting. We plan to host an intimate Chef-driven, themed dinner in Johnny’s Place soon. Stay tuned as the menu is developed.

Thank you for your patronage!

Chef
