LOST

Exhibition open Tuesday - Sunday 10am - 3pm until Sunday 28 September Losing something means that it becomes mis-placed, falls out of sight and is in a sense taken out of the flow of time... For every one artwork that might get shown and written about there is another swathe of high quality works that have a different story to tell. Dr Michele Whiting, Curator Our new exhibition LOST stems from a series of thoughts and conversations around providing a re-platform for art that has for whatever reason disappeared from view. Digital works that were feared to be lost have been recovered from now obsolete formats and works hidden away after a shift in politics now illustrate moments in history. With works dating back to the 1960s, LOST provides an alternative art history and an opportunity to explore the fascinating stories that art has to tell.

Family Fiesta

Saturday 6 September 12noon - 5pm | Free

L

ast year it was superheroes. This year Hoodwink returns with a Fiesta that is out of this world! Artistic Director Stephanie Jalland told us more about her interpretation of the theme ‘Artificial Things’ and all the fun and games you can expect from this year’s free family day:

Look out for Hoodwink performers and props and create new stories. Fraser Hooper is of course just an out of this world funny man who stretches our expectations of comedy and what performance can be like!

How have you interpreted the theme of Artificial Things? ARTificial - a celebration of all things out of this world! There is something for all the family to enjoy - this year’s Family Fiesta encourages you to go out of this world and try new things and a new way of looking at the world around you.

and more so there is something for everyone to do, to see, to hear and to dance!

What is real, what do we expect to see and how can we surprise ourselves? The Buschellini Trio will play familiar tunes but with unfamiliar instruments. You can zoom in and have a go at garden design but in miniature on a plate! Become a living work of art yourself and paint your face as a painting or like a famous artist - think Picasso’s moustache or Frida Kahlos’ monobrow. You could even step outside of the everyday and learn to Samba!

For those older Family Fiesta goers there are a few TED talks that examine how we perceive reality...

Are cuddly toys invited? Each year we invite you to bring teddies or toys along to share the fun so don’t forget them... there have been spectacular leaps from the tower and amazing catapult jumps across the main space - what will they get up to this year? Remember not to bring your most precious teddy or toy just in case they get carried away!

Puppet Time! The Pied Piper Saturday 13 September 11am & 2pm

E

verybody loved The Tinderbox and The Princess and the Pea so we simply had to bring Norwich Puppet Theatre back for more puppet fun and games. We chatted to the company about their new show The Pied Piper: What can we expect from this production of the Pied Piper? You can expect more of the Theatre’s trademark mix of puppetry and storytelling with Pied Piper. It’s a really entertaining and funny show. There will be hidden surprises as the set transforms, foot-tapping music, and lots and lots of rats! How do you go about choosing which story to tell next? We love to take traditional stories and folktales and give them a new twist. When we’re choosing our next story one of the first questions we ask is - will this story work as a puppet show? We pick tales which have great potential to be visually brought to life in new and exciting ways.

We hear there’s only one performer. How will she entrance children and families for the duration of the show? Pied Piper is performed by Gemma Khawaja who brings the story to life with a wonderful cast of puppets. She performs over 10 different characters as she guides you through the town of Hamelin. With just one performer the show feels very intimate, a really unique theatre experience which both children and adults enjoy. What would you like the audience to take away from the performance? There is something magical about seeing live puppetry which always puts a smile on your face. We would like the audience to come away feeling entertained and inspired.

World-class Guitar Lulo Reinhardt and Darren Hodge Friday 19 September 8pm

W

ith reviews like “The finest concert of guitar music I have ever seen” (Sydney Morning Herald) following Lulo Reinhardt around the world, it seems he certainly shares the musical talent of his Great Uncle Django. We chatted to Music Programmer Thomas Brooman about why he chose the Latin Swing star for the autumn and what made young fingerstyle guitarist Darren Hodge stand out as the perfect support act: Why did you choose Lulo Reinhardt for the autumn season? I thought Lulo would be a good choice for the Autumn season because he is obviously a really outstanding musician with an international reputation and standing. The fact of his famous family name and filial relationship with the truly legendary Django Reinhardt offers a ‘way in’ for people who may not have come across Lulo’s music before.

Where did you first come across Darren Hodge? I first heard Darren Hodge play some time ago during a South West Music School residential event when Darren was a part of the Music School. His talent was absolutely obvious and at that point he was only sixteen years of age. I now help Darren as his mentor with an Arts Council funded mentorship programme and it is a pleasure to encourage such an outstanding musician. What makes Darren stand out from other young guitarists? Darren is absolutely devoted to his music, typically practicing for four hours or more every day. His sensitivity and speed of playing is remarkable and derives from both a sincere passion and a devotion to the craft of the instrument.

Young musicians ‘Hijack’ Towers & Aztecs gig Thursday 25 September 7.30pm

H

ijack Open Mic evenings led by our Upstarts creative panel have uncovered some fantastic young musical talent in Salisbury. We thought it’s about time those musicians got to share a stage with some of the South West’s finest up-and-coming talent so this season we’re making it happen.

Towers and Aztecs are two of the South West’s most highly regarded young bands. Bristol based almost-girl band Towers is gaining an excellent reputation for its alternative brand of Indie Rock. Aztecs is known for its brave and eclectic songwriting.

Together they bring intricate guitar, driving rhythm, anthemic songs and high-tempo dance tracks. The two South West bands will be supported by young musicians from our regular Hijack Open Mic sessions. The Hijack Open Mic session will take place as usual from 5 - 7pm followed by the main gig, including supports from 7.30pm. Come along and support local musicians as they showcase their talents alongside the South West’s finest.

arnstormers Comedy returns on Friday 26 September after its long summer break with a cracking line-up of comedians from the London Comedy Circuit:

High energy Brummie Mickey Sharma: “A very enjoyable laugh-a-minute rollercoaster ride” The List Mickey Sharma’s mix of comedy and another form of artistry (you will see what I mean) make him as unique as he is funny. His high and contagious energy helps him tame any crowd no matter their age, gender, ethnicity or amount of alcohol consumed. Excellent storytelling stand-up John Scott: “Always plays a blinder. Never hits a dry patch. People were literally in tears of laughter.” Edinburgh Evening News John Scott first stepped on stage as a stand up in May 1999 at the Stand comedy club. The promoters of the club were so impressed with his debut they asked him to participate in their Edinburgh festival Fringe show Stand up Scotland. Since then he has won multiple comedy awards and been selected from over 200 applicants to work on the BBC’s Jesting About project.

The skilful Dan Evans: “Original and inventive” The Times For over a decade Dan’s accessible but childish surrealism has delighted audiences throughout the UK and Ireland. Happy Birthday

Altar Club

I

t has been 3 years since the launch of our monthly alternative music nights. They’ve welcomed top Ska, Reggae, Pop and Punk bands from the UK and further afield and seen hundreds of people dance the night away to alternative DJ sets. Join us on Saturday 27 September to raise a glass and toast its 3rd birthday. Robb Blake of Brave Promotions chatted to us about the big birthday bash: Why did you choose Gaz Brookfield for Altar Club’s 3rd Birthday? As a promoter I have always been a huge fan of Gaz’s music and work ethic. Gaz is one of the hardest working musicians in the UK and has got where he is through non stop touring and great song writing with songs that are honest and for the everyday person! Gaz has only ever been available as a solo musician so persuading him to come with a full band is a dream come true. Who else will be playing? We will be having 6 bands in total spread over 2 stages with main support coming from local ska/party favourites The Intercepteurs who have been at Altar Club a few times, Middlenamekill and Faux. There will also be DJ sets from regular Altar Club DJ’s Belko and Brave.

Will there be any special birthday surprises? Well we are also very very pleased to have special guests Echo Boom Generation making their Altar Club debut. EBG feature members of Kate Nash’s backing band (including Salisbury’s Emma Hughes) who have been busy touring all over the world including slots at one of Americas biggest music festivals Lollapalooza. So VERY exciting!
