SQUAWK Symposium Saturday 21 April

3.30pm - 5.30pm FREE but ticket required

New Queer Cinema emerged in North America in 1990, offering a form of filmmaking that challenged previous, often stereotypical portrayals of queers, lesbians, gays, bisexuals and trans-individuals. We’ll look at what ‘queer cinema’ actually is, what it means to filmmakers and audiences, and its depictions of LGBTQIA+ individuals over the past 3 decades in films such as Boys Don’t Cry, Brokeback Mountain and Carol.

The SQUAWK symposium will discuss ‘What are the key issues for contemporary LGBTQIA+ communities and what can venues such as Salisbury Arts Centre do to help?’ It will begin with a brief panel session with speakers covering a range of topics including transgender, parenting, being out in the army, older lesbians, media and film representations etc. then break out into facilitated sessions so everyone can input practical ideas which will be shared with other venues in the UK too.

Talking Pictures

Open Exhibition of Cartoons, Illustrations & Animations Saturday 13 January Saturday 24 February Regular open exhibitions have long been an important element of the exhibition programme here at Salisbury Arts Centre and this year we decided to explore whether pictures can sometimes speak louder than words by focusing on the highly visual mediums of cartoons, illustrations and animations. Talking Pictures will showcase a varied range of work by artists who have submitted their work for selection by a panel of professionals. We are delighted to have acclaimed cartoonist Roger Penwill, artist & illustration lecturer Vincent Larkin and artist & animator Matthew Dean on the selection panel for this open exhibition as they are all extremely knowledgeable.

Ground-Breaking

Wiltshire & the Wider World - Exploring Landscape & Conflict Saturday 3 March – Saturday 30 April Connecting with the centenary of the end of the First World War this year, we are pleased to be working in partnership with Swindon Museum & Art Gallery to show a selection of works from their Modern British Art collection in relation to the Cicatrix project. C I C A T R I X - the scar of a healed wound is a multimedia international touring project travelling throughout the South West of England, across Commonwealth countries and as far away as Montreal in Quebec, offering audiences further insight into the WW1 legacy surrounding Salisbury Plain through the artists’ interpretations of this scarred and ancient landscape and its connections across the globe. Henny Burnett, Susan Francis and Prudence Maltby have collaborated with artists from Commonwealth countries Australia, New Zealand and Canada, all of whom would have had troops train on Salisbury Plain during the First World War. The local and international artists are creating work to display at Swindon Museum & Art Gallery in November 2018. swindonmuseumandartgallery.org.uk | cicatrixuk.wixsite.com/cicatrix
