amount of time I put into my religion, I feel like I should list it? Also, I really like taking showers in pitch black darkness. Oh — and floating sensory isolation tanks. Let me tell you - that is clutch. And I’m a Leo with triple moon in Libra. Wait, sorry, what was the question?

FRONT OF HOUSE STAFF

What are your hopes for the future of SLFS?

How long have you worked for SLFS?

Almost 3 years. I mean, at this point I feel like I’m approaching the point where I make it a permanent lifestyle to be here, move into the the basement of The Broadway and rig some pre-lit candles to rise from a layer of fog on the floor whenever my bewitched lovers follow me down there.

What made you want to apply?

Poor impulse control. There was also a vision of The Alligator from “All Dogs Go To Heaven” where she gave me a lot of wisdom. One of the things she said to do was apply here.

What is your favorite part of your job?

One of the best things about working at SLFS is finding out what all the people think about the films they see. The actual “film’ part of a film is really only half, you know? To me the experience of a movie isn’t just what happens on screen, it’s the conversation. What are people saying? Like this happened recently with “The Shape of Water.” I’ve always been a sci-fi/ fantasy fan and like Guillermo Del Toro, so “Shape” wasn’t a hard sell for me. But a lot of people saw it because it won Best Picture and thought, “Well maybe I’ll give this a chance” even if they were initially alienated by the classic Universal Monster stuff. And while I think the film is beautiful, truly beautiful, to me what matters isn’t just my opinion, it’s how those other people who weren’t primed for Fish Husbandry like I was felt about it — who either found themselves surprised and enjoyed it or still kind of don’t like it, but for different reasons than they thought when they were going in.

saying that 8 of the 9 best picture nominations were each in their own way political given America at this exact moment, and we have never had a ratio like that before. Getting to see my country, my city, my generation, whatever it might be through that lens — it helps me know my place in all of it.

Tell us about your life outside of SLFS. What are some of your hobbies?

Well I, like all twenty-____ year olds, have a podcast, The Judgement Day Refreshment Committee. As my cohost and renaissance woman Dory Peacock says ,”We won’t judge you but we will bring the jello salad to your trial.” We cover Young Adult fiction - movies, television, and books for teens and 20-somethings with arrested development. It’s kind of a weird topic for a podcast, because we find Young Adult is so broad now in application. Like that used to very specifically mean “Twilight” or “Harry Potter,” but now there’s so many things made for teens or about them, like even “Thoroughbreds,” or “Lady Bird” which recently played here. Those to me are also “young adult” because they have a lot to say about the experience of coming of age in the zeitgeist of April 2018— even though they lack the normal trappings YA is known for like vampires or dystopian hungry games or CW-esque teen melodrama. It’s a huge topic with a lot of room for exploration. (Visit us How would you say film impacts your life? at JDRCpodcast.podbean.com) One reason I’m so interested in films and filmmaking I spend of lot of time reading and watching media criticism. Youtube is amazing. And I mean specifically is it reveals a lot about our culture, our day to day. youtube video essays. I also enjoy video games Consider “Captain America: Civil War.” It’s a stealth especially stuff that’s fantasy or sci-fi role plays. I am treatise on the ethics of military drone strikes without international oversight or accountability. And also a pretty religious person. Which isn’t something that was a movie ostensibly for kids! I’d go on record you would normally list as a hobby, but given the

It’s so hard to say. The way films are being produced and distributed has already changed so much in the last 5 years with streaming services. So where we fit into it is totally up in the air. It’s so important to come to art house films, because nowadays the films may not come here if there isn’t an expected turnout. And then they find their second life in an endless queue of content online you can always procrastinate. Watching film, engaging with it, takes energy. But when you come to an art house you always get a return on that investment of effort and time.

What is your favorite movie and why?

Don’t do this to me, man! I thought we were friends. You know this is a hard question to answer! I’m gonna answer this by talking about a movie that came out last year that I’m not sure a lot of people saw or heard about which I really liked called “The Ornithologist.” It’s on Netflix right now. It’s this bizarre film about a gay birdwatcher wandering through the Portuguese wilderness with a series of vignettes loosely based on the Catholic Saint Anthony of Padua. I think it’s a nice elaboration on some of the queer films that came out last year which garnered more attention, like “Call Me By Your Name.” CMBYN affected me emotionally but it lacks a certain spunk that lots of other movies have - it’s beautiful but not necessarily challenging. “The Ornithologist” weaves a tone that’s enthralling to me. It’s peaceful, tepid and then all at once shocking with moments of violence and bondage and sex. It challenges the idea of why is one thing “sacred” and the other “profane” and what happens when the lines between those blur. To me, we need not only queer films that are explorations of love, but also what it means to be queer and spiritual in the context of a spiritual tradition that wasn’t always welcoming to us, yet we are upending just by being present. Check it out if that sounds like your game of baseball!
