JACK OTT

FRONT OF HOUSE STAFF How long have you worked for SLFS?

I’ve been working at the Film Society since early October, so about 10 months.

What made you want to apply?

I knew I wanted to apply before I even moved to Salt Lake City (which was in September) because it’s the coolest place in town! Also because I love movies and a friend from SLC told me about it.

What is your favorite part of your job?

I know its been said before but my favorite part of the job is spending time with my coworkers; joining such a cool community so soon after moving to a new city was really important to me.

How would you say film impacts your life?

ART HOUSE THEATRE WEEK

SEPT. 19-24 2017

I play the drums in a local garbage pop/comedy punk band, Fists in the Wind, I know this is shameless self promotion but check us out on bandcamp! I love food, specifically cheese, so I am a cheesemonger at Liberty Heights Fresh. I also love doing the NYT Crossword and obviously, watching movies!

I hope SLFS keeps being rad, which I’m sure it will. I would love to see more people using the Tower video archive; anyone who hasn’t should check it out as soon as possible ‘cause the Tower is my favorite spot in town.

Tell us about your life outside of SLFS. What are some of your hobbies?

What are your hopes for the future of SLFS?

CELEBRATE LIVES

I don’t do as much academic reading now that I’m out of school so I gather most of my tools for engaging with social issues by watching movies. Film is such an accessible medium for most people today - by watching a variety of films, one can join a network of conversations. I believe that almost all films impact the ways viewers see the world in varying degrees, either through deliberate filmmaking motives or through our own subconscious, so we might as well try to understand how.

What is your favorite movie and why?

Right now, my favorite movie would have to be The Warriors or Playtime. They are very different films but both are extremely fun and visually pleasing. Growing up in New York City I’ve always had a soft spot for The Warriors, but sentimental attachment aside I think it’s a really good movie about youth surviving in a dilapidated city. Playtime is just pure 70 millimeter brilliance. Jacques Tati creates an entire fake city to film this perfect comedy!
