STEPHEN SIMMONS
SLC filmmaker fostering a passion for film
by Annie Jenkins
Any plans for future videos, any ideas?
State your name and official title: My name is Stephen Simmons and I am the Manager of Operations at SLFS, and I work with customer service as well.
How long have you worked for SLFS and how did you start? I’ve been with the Salt Lake Film Society for about 6 and a half or 7 years. As a wee lad, I always wanted to work at the Tower Theatre. And I also always wanted to do a stage play at the Tower. Years later I got a phone call from a friend who worked here who said there was a manager position opening at the Tower. I was working as a general We work together, manager at a not only as a team, but theater up in Park City, but I as a family. took a pay cut and came here to work at the Tower as theater manager. I also had my annual show, An October Evening, at the Tower one year as well. So, dreams do come true.
Favorite thing about working here? For everybody, it’s what we represent at the Film Society, which is independent and foreign cinema. That’s a huge passion for me. But most of all, I like the people who work here. We work together, not only as a team, but as a family. And I think that’s very important in a work environment because not only we get along really well at work, but after work, you know, we also hang out, we watch movies, and we also share a bottle of wine. It’s beautiful.
What would you want people to take away from their experience at SLFS?
Yes! As a kid I was a huge cinephile but my tastes were more in the horror and cult genre. So that’s what got me into film a lot, just old films like the original Thing, The Gate, and The Changeling.
Manager of Operations
I’m a local filmmaker here in Utah and I’ve been doing film for over ten years. When I can do something I have a passion for and that’s my hobby on the side and incorporate that into work – you know, people always say don’t mix pleasure with work, but that’s exactly what I do with the Salt Lake Film Society videos and I have a lot of fun doing them. My friend and coworker, Conor Long, and I are given free range, basically, to do whatever we want and that’s always a good thing. So when an employer gives you that kind of freedom, artistic freedom, you can really do whatever you want, you know? And hopefully you have an audience that likes the end result.
Directed by Wes Anderson USA/GERMANY | R | 100 min. | Comedy
No, I don’t have any ideas for any future videos; I usually just take an idea when inspiration hits first and usually that happens when I get all the materials presented to me. And then ideas start coming. I never really think about what I’m going to do in the future. It’s like freestyle film.
Have you always been interested in film?
Talk about the films you make for the Film Society.
THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL
I hope they walk away from the venue, either the Broadway or the Tower, having had a cinematic experience, like they just went into an art museum, because film is art, and they’ve walked away feeling changed or different. Either in a positive or a bad way, whatever the film evoked inside them, I think that’s important because that’s what art does. It gives you a wide range of emotions. Overall, I hope they had a good customer service experience.
Starring Ralph Fiennes, Tony Revolori, Adrien Brody, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Tilda Swinton, Saoirse Ronan, Willem Dafoe, Jason Schwartzman, Jeff Goldblum, and Owen Wilson
MISTAKEN FOR STRANGERS Directed by Tom Berninger USA | NR | 75 min. | Documentary
Tom Berninger chronicles his time spent on the road as a member of the tour crew for The National, the rock & roll band fronted by his brother, Matt.
VERONICA MARS
Directed by Rob Thomas USA | PG-13 | 107 min. | Comedy/Drama
What are your hopes for SLFS? I hope we keep moving forward and expanding what we do and expanding our audiences. That we can continue with great programming, and hopefully always fulfilling our mission.
What’s your favorite movie and why? That’s a hard one. Marcus Salem also said this, but it’s a film that I always go back to, It Happened One Night by Frank Capra. I think it’s a brilliant movie and you can watch it over, and over and over and it’s for all those hopeless romantics out there.
