APRIL 2015 @SLFS

explore the culture

KRYSTILLE SOUZA

Visual media is such a wonderful, beautiful art form...

The people I work with and also the people that come here that I get to meet. I feel like I wouldn’t work at just any theatre because they don’t have the clientele that is so amazing and so supportive of what we’re trying to do. And I think that’s really motivating you know? When you go into work and you feel like there are people who are really supportive of what we’re trying to do.

PROJECTIONIST How long have you worked here? April of 2014.

And what drew you to start working for the film society?

I moved here from California and I was kind of like, slightly looking for a job, you know, just trying to figure things out. I came here to see The Grand Budapest Hotel, which had been out for months and I just hadn’t gotten around to seeing it. I saw that it was playing here and when I came to see it I saw a sign that we were hiring. I thought it was perfect because I have my degree in film, from UC Santa Cruz, so I thought why not? So I came in and applied, and it was Helen working behind the counter so she made me fill out this application, which was really complicated, and she was like, “No cellphones, no nothing.” But I filled it out and I got a call back, and I got hired and I love it!

Have you always loved film?

ALWAYS. Always, always, always. Film has always been something - I mean media in general has been something that has been really important to me growing up. Whether it’s television or film, it’s important. I think it’s a great place that provides at sometimes escapism and at other times education. Visual media is such a wonderful, beautiful art form. That is something that I’ve really learned to love because it’s so collaborative and it’s so about getting multiple artists together to create something to share with people. And I have really, always enjoyed that.

What’s your favorite aspect of working here?

You’ve just made the transition from Front of House staff to a projectionist, what has that experience been like?

(Laughs.) A little scary. It’s always challenging, ya know, but it’s always exciting. I used to be at the Tower full time but now I’m [at the Broadway] more. I love the Tower completely and I think everyone should go to the Tower and experience that. But it’s really exciting being part of a staff where your responsibility is the ultimate responsibility of showing the film and making sure it plays for people. So being a projectionist is really fun.

Which of those two positions do you prefer?

Um, I like them both! They’re both challenging in different ways. Like I loved working at the Tower, I love being able to have people come in and ask about film and recommendations and have those conversations with them. But I also really love being able to show films to people, so that’s really nice.

What are your hobbies outside of the Film Society?

Hobbies? Well my friends and I have a puppy that I take care of constantly, so he’s kind of a non-stop project outside of work right now. Film editing. Hanging out with my family when I can. And just trying to live a good life.

What are your hopes for SLFS?

My hopes are that we keep on track and we keep getting people that support us and just showing great films. And also educate a community about art that they may not get the chance to see anywhere else.

Last question, what is your favorite movie and why?

(Groans.) Oh I knew this question was coming! This is kind of a long winded answer so I’m not sure if you wanna cut this down (laughs). I have three, and for three very different reasons. Capturing the Friedmans, a documentary, that I think is just the most beautiful, wonderful documentary. I studied foundfootage in college and it was just so amazing how they took found footage in this crazy situation and made this beautiful documentary that just blows your mind. It’s edited amazingly, AMAZINGLY, and I think it’s just something everyone needs to see just for the art of it, not even the story. So that’s one. The White Ribbon by [Michael] Haneke, I think that’s just a beautiful film; it’s shot wonderfully. But my favorite movie, just my goto movie is (pauses and laughs) The Fifth Element. I think it’s just the perfect, popcorn sit-around movie. It’s a little long but it has every element of just wonderfulness in it. It’s got suspense, romance, love, and you can never forget the phrase “multipass.” (Laughs.) So those are my favorite movies.

SATURDAY, APRIL 11 @ NOON Returning to Rome from a war against the Goths, the general Titus Andronicus brings with him the queen Tamora and her three sons as prisoners of war. Titus’ sacrifice of Tamora’s eldest son to appease the ghosts of his dead sons, and his decision to refuse to accept the title of emperor, initiates a terrible cycle of mutilation, rape and murder. And all the while, at the centre of the nightmare, there moves the villainous, self-delighting Aaron.

ADMISSION: General - $18 • SLFS Members - $12 • Students - $9.25

Grotesquely violent and daringly experimental, Titus was the smash hit of Shakespeare’s early career, and is written with a ghoulish energy he was never to repeat elsewhere.

On Earth Day, Wednesday April 22nd, 2015 theatres around the globe will be screening PLANETARY, the provocative and breathtaking film from the Planetary Collective and directed by Guy Reid that brings into focus our connection to all living things on planet Earth. The planet is suffering form a series of crises: crises in the environment, society, economics, and ecology. There is also a crisis of perspective: how to place oneself in the context of life on earth; how to see our home in a larger worldview; how to justify our lifestyle choices in relation to our fragile planet. It can be overwhelming and difficult to navigate through these questions yet everyone is seeking the answers. What is required is a shift in culture, a new way to see our planet and each other and PLANETARY shows us how.

India is surging with global ambition. But beyond the luxury hotels surrounding Mumbai airport lies a makeshift slum, full of people with plans of their own. Zehrunisa and her son Abdul aim to recycle enough rubbish to fund a proper house. Sunil, twelve and stunted, wants to eat until he’s as tall as Kalu the thief. Asha seeks to steal government anti-poverty funds to turn herself into a ‘first-class person’, while her daughter Manju intends to become the slum’s first female graduate. But their schemes are fragile; global recession threatens the garbage trade, and another slum-dweller is about to make an accusation that will destroy herself and shatter the neighbourhood.
