JAMESRAMIREZ FRONT OF HOUSE STAFFER & GRAPHIC ARTIST if they were hiring and he said, “Yeah,” so I filled my application out.
What’s your favorite aspect of your job here? Wow, favorite aspect of the job? I just love being a part of the only organization, in basically the state of Utah, that does this. So I just love the Salt Lake Film Society and I love being a part of it. I also just love being surrounded by film and constantly learning more about the medium.
Could you describe some of the work you do here, in regard to design?
James with director Werner Herzog
Well, I do a lot of the stuff for The Tower. So anytime you see posters promoting events, specifically the Summer Late Nights series, that are Tower-related, I did those.
What are your hopes for SLFS? Just that we will continue to grow and continue to bring independent, foreign language films, and art house cinema to the public. And just keep doing that and going stronger and stronger. One of my main hopes is t o see our revival programs grow and not diminish.
What’s your favorite movie and why? Hmm, that’s really a difficult question for a cinephile, and
by Annie Jenkins
How long have you worked for the Film Society?
What is your favorite program that we do at the every time I see people’s responses to that I’m like, “How did Film Society? they wheedle it down?” But I guess, I mean, it changes from
I want to say about ten years. Close to ten years.
That would be Summer Late Nights. That’s my favorite program. I like anything we do retrospective or revival-wise.
How did you get started here?
What are your hobbies outside of the Film Society?
I used to come here a lot to watch movies, a lot. Before I ever started, I always coming here [the Broadway] to watch movies, and the Tower. So since I was in high school, I came and watched stuff, and I talked to Andy [Wijaya, manager of the Broadway] a lot. I was also working at Borders, and he would go there and buy tons of movies, back when Borders existed, and we would talk about movies there. And then I would come here and talk to him. One day I think I just asked
Well of course, watching movies. Outside of that, I’m an avid record collector, because I love music. Music and film go like hand-in-hand for me; they’re like the two main loves of my life, I guess you could say. But I also love to read, I read a ton. And I’m super into graphic design. I follow a lot of design websites and blogs, read a lot of books on design and study graphic design. I also really love to cook; I’m always cooking.
SEE THESE WHILE YOU STILL CAN!
...Summer Late Nights. That’s my favorite program. I like anything we do retrospective or revival-wise.

day to day, but I guess right now would say it’s The Devils, by Ken Russell. Partly just because it’s so elusive and hard to see. But I mean, the movie that I’ve seen more than anything is Big Trouble in Little China. I think I’ve seen that more than I’ve seen any other film in my life; I know it verbatim. I’ve seen it hundreds of times, so maybe that’s my runner up.
And hey, it’s coming for Summer Late Nights! Yeah, it’s perfect! I’m really excited for the August 16-18 run [of Big Trouble in Little China]. But yeah, [my favorite movie] changes, it always changes.
