@SLFS
to go to a few record shops and catching a movie that you just couldn’t find anywhere else. After graduating and moving closer to downtown, I started attending the Summer Late Nights screenings at the Tower almost religiously and started making dressing up and going to Rocky Horror a holiday tradition in my friend circle. The programs we have were such a big part of me finding my niche and realizing my love of film, so why wouldn’t I want to try and be a part of that?
Film has an enormous impact on how we see the world and how we view other people.
ELLEN LEWIS FRONT OF HOUSE STAFF How long have you worked here? I started at the Film Society in November, immediately after the grand unveiling of the Broadway remodel and right when award season was starting to hit full-swing. There were a lot of big changes happening all at once and it was very exciting to get to be part of this newness. What drew you to start working for the Film Society? I just love the Film Society! My family relocated to Salt Lake from Las Vegas when I was 15, and I kind of stumbled across the Broadway on accident. All throughout high school there was no better way to spend a weekend than making the trek downtown
What is your favorite thing about working here? I admire all of my coworkers so much. Usually when someone describes their work environment as a “family” my eyes roll all the way into the back of my head, but I’m definitely grateful to work somewhere where I’m constantly surrounded by such intelligent, progressive, cool people who care about the same weird things I care about. Even when I’m having a rough day I’m always happy to come into work and be among friends. What are your hopes for SLFS? I’m hoping we’ll continue to reach a wide audience with our programs and continue to foster an interest in film as an art form for younger audiences. I had the opportunity to help out with Big Pictures Little People recently, and it meant a lot to me to see all of these sweet children getting so excited about movies. We’ve also had a pretty good track record this year with screening films millenials can relate to made by young up-and-coming filmmakers, so I hope that we continue to give these young artists a place to share their art.
How does film affect your life? I’m actually double majoring in film and gender studies up at the university right now. Art and media, especially film, has an enormous impact on how we see the world and how we view other people. Right now most mainstream movies still have relatively racist and misogynistic undertones, but independent film tends to be a way for people from all walks of life to share their stories and ideas, making film a way for people to open their eyes and spark discussion on social issues as well. I’m hoping to see film continue to develop as a place for more equal representation than it has been in the past and continue to be something that gives outsiders a voice for their experiences and opinions. What are some of your hobbies outside of SLFS? I’ve been on a DIY project kick lately, especially sewing. My favorite thing to do right now is to go to thrift stores to look for old bedsheets with crazy patterns to use as the fabric to create something completely new with. I’ve also been big on baking lately. I make a pretty mean Nutella buttercream frosting. What is your favorite movie and why? I am forever obsessed with The Virgin Suicides. The book and the movie as a cohesive unit are near perfection to me. Sofia Coppola is one of my idols, and I especially admire the way that she can delicately handle such dark subject matter and themes of isolation while still producing something so ethereal and lovely and visually stunning. It’s the kind of art that I wish I could make, and something that is incredibly inspirational and important to who I am as a person.
