FEBRUARY 2014 “The major [movie theater] exhibition chains have ShoWest in Las Vegas. The independent venues have Art House Convergence in Midway, Utah.” – Variety

Salt Lake Film Society sends delegates to Art House Convergence Six delegates from Salt Lake Film Society participated in the nationwide Art House Convergence conference last month. This annual conference is designed for communitybased, mission-driven film exhibitors and community cinema programmers. Independent art house operators gather and discuss common challenges and share successes and secrets at the Convergence each January just before the start of the Sundance Film Festival. Like SLFS, our colleague independent Art House cinemas rely on their local communities for support, both from box office and concession revenue and, to truly thrive, grow and serve, from philanthropic gifts and volunteer support. Over four days in comfortable surroundings away from the daily challenges of the workplace, art house operators from around the US - and several from around the world - got together to tell stories, problem-solve, and teach each other about their craft. The overarching theme for the 2014 Art House Convergence was Art House Excellence: Making the Best Better. At the Art House Convergence annual Those attending for conference, delegates SLFS were Tori Baker, enjoy inspirational executive director; Amy speakers, informative Beth Leber, director sessions and panel disof operations and community programs; cussions that provide Barb Guy, director of PR productive tips about and marketing; Andik programming, marketWijaya, Broadway ing, fundraising, techmanager/programmer; nology, and industry Stephen Simmons, trends to help improve operations manager the quality and effecand customer service; tiveness of communityand Marcus Salem, Tower manager. Five based, mission-driven SLFS board members art house cinemas. attended parts of the Convergence as well. SLFS staff member Nick Dunn attended as a volunteer, helping out with errands and the like. There was so much to absorb! Delegates were kept busy with panel discussions, lunchtime roundtables, keynote speeches including one by Leonard Maltin, movie screenings, and cocktail socials each night. We attended panels on film programming, strategic planning, creating pre-show content, expanding our audience base, trends in concession sales, digital cinema, customer service, fund raising, disability issues in the arts, marketing, and sustainable business practices for non-profits.

We all came back tired, exhilarated, and incredibly committed to building on our organization’s strengths, preparing for our future, and tackling some pesky problems. Now that our hell year of fund raising is behind us, we are seeing 2014 as our year to celebrate our community support and our successes, and to dedicate ourselves to getting even better at what we do. Salt Lake Film Society is a founding member of Art House Convergence, now in its seventh year, and Tori Baker and Amy Beth Leber are founding key leaders of the Art House Convergence. In 2005, the Art House Project was created to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Sundance Institute and pay tribute to art house theatres nationwide. Twelve art house theatres from around the country were designated and united as Sundance Institute Art House Project theatres. In 2006, a Sundance Institute 25th Anniversary retrospective series was made available for each of the theatres to show in their local communities. The Sundance Institute Art House Project continues its commitment to expanding the reach of independent cinema across the entire country. Thank you for caring about Salt Lake Film Society and our venues, the Broadway and the Tower. We are grateful for your patronage and your support.

Amy Beth by Annie Jenkins

LEBER

Growing the vision of Salt Lake’s home for independent film All the best organizations have an Amy Beth. She’s the person who will do any and every job to make sure things turn out right. She’s the person who breathes life into the organization through solid competence, passion for the mission, and a sunny disposition. She wears many hats, quietly solves problems, and is admired and appreciated by her coworkers.

Director of Operations and Community Programs

How long have you worked here? I think it’s been about nine years. It’s a bit scary.

and I’d just like to continue to be a first rate art house theater rather than a sort of home-grown art house. We’re growing so much and we’re growing up. We I’d just like to continue need to actually become an adult to be a first rate art organization instead of that house theater. sort of younger organization we’ve been. It’s been a long haul here at the Salt Lake Film Society, and I stuck through it for the past nine years and just now it’s finally sort of coming together into the grown-up vision that Tori and I had. It’s like we’re finally where we want to be.

What’s your favorite movie and why?

What are some of things you’ve seen change since SLFS’s inception?

How did you get started here?

I knew you were going to ask me that and I always sort of hate that question. People tend to ask you that when you’re on an airplane and when they know you work for a film organization and I always feel like I’m put on the spot. But you know, I like to say Bottle Rocket and Jules & Jim. Those are two of my favorites, Jules & Jim I saw in college and I’ve always loved that film. And Bottle Rocket is a little bit of a guilty pleasure but also Bottle Rocket was one of the first newly produced, independent films that got me hooked on independent film.

Well we’ve grown a lot and we’ve definitely learned how to operate more like a non-profit than just like a for-profit movie theater, which I think has been really great for us. But like I said it was Tori at first, and then the theater manager Andik, and she brought me on and then we’ve just grown and grown and grown. But for a few years there it was just me and her upstairs working in the offices.

Tori Baker and I worked at Sundance together, for the Sundance Film Festival and the Sundance Labs and when she came on here as the executive director, she brought me on as her sort of second in command because we had already known each other.

Have you always loved film or did it start after you started working here?

What are some things you would like to see change in the future for SLFS?

I have always loved film. I went to college and got a film degree at University of Colorado, Boulder. So film degree in Production/Theory.

Well I’d like to make sure we can keep up with our growth
