JANUARY 2015 explore the culture
What drew you to start working for the Salt Lake Film Society?
I was just out looking for jobs. I came to the Broadway to see Dallas Buyers Club because it had just gotten nominated for an Oscar, or it had just won an Oscar, one of the two, either way. So I came and saw Dallas Buyers Club and saw that the Film Society was hiring so I filled out an application and had interviews and they all went really well and I got the job. I’ve been here ever since and I love it.
Have you always loved film?
@SLFS
Oh man, I’m excited and nervous. I think … it’s like walking a knife’s edge for me, I don’t know what to expect, you know. I’ve been here for Sundance events, and I’ve seen how crazy it gets. And then, being on the opposite side of the counter now, where you have to run everything and make everything go smoothly, so I’m excited. I think it will be great. It’ll be stressful; I’ll probably hate my life for like three weeks, but it will be worth it.
The more people that
I have always enjoyed film; I think What’s your favorite aspect of are exposed to indie my love for film developed when working here? film, I think the better I was in high school and went Well, obviously I love getting to be exposed to college, you know, and then I to all the great films, but hands down it has the world will be. started getting exposed to more to be the people I work with. Because we directors like Wes Anderson and really are like a family in a way, we all hang Gus van Sant. In college I was out together, we all talk to each other, we all just watching as much as I could. I think the first film I ever get along really well. They’re all just awesome, fun people to be remember seeing was Aladdin in the movie theater. My mom around. There isn’t a day where I work at the Film Society where and dad took me to see it, and my mom hated it and complained I don’t laugh hysterically at something one of my coworkers has the whole time because she doesn’t like movies, but it was said. And I love that about my job, it’s one of the funnest places fun! I remember having a lot of fun and Robin Williams was I have ever worked. And I couldn’t be more grateful. hilarious.
How do you like to incorporate film outside of your job here?
The great thing about here is we’re exposed to film all the time, so when I’m not working, I’m watching movies either here or at home or I rent them from the Tower. I go to free screenings at the library sometimes. I’ll go to Brewvies and get a drink and watch some big, crappy Hollywood movie, but still, I mean, it’s fun and I like getting out seeing the different kinds of movies that Salt Lake has to offer.
What are some of your personal hobbies?
WALL
ASSISTANT MANAGER BROADWAY CENTRE CINEMAS
What are your hopes for SLFS?
I love seeing all the change. We’re really changing and incorporating new things and it’s awesome. I love to see all this growth and change. And really my biggest hope for the Film Society is the word just keeps getting out and we keep getting bigger because we’re one of the few voices in Salt Lake City that allows for independent films to be seen, and that’s phenomenal. The more people that are exposed to indie film, I think the better the world will be.
And finally…
The million dollar question?
In my free time, I like to paint and draw, which I do pretty regularly. I have a little studio in my apartment. I’m currently working on a comic strip; that’s very exciting. I’m working with my coworker here, Conor Long, on developing an animation cartoon, which should be fun. I love to read, I love to explore Salt Lake, hang out with friends, and of course, watch movies!
DERREK
So this is going to be your first Sundance Film Festival at SLFS, how are you feeling about that?
Yes, the million dollar question. Can I phone a friend?
(laughs) What is your favorite movie and why?
And why? I love this question! I’m probably the only person who said that, huh?
Check out this fun new Web Series: http://bit.ly/1zSaB1h
Derrek Wall
Yeah.
I’ve thought about it, you know, because I’ve read the articles and other interviews and everyone is rather divided. My favorite film would have to be Pink Flamingos by John Waters. Because really, it’s trash for trash’s sake. And he just has a way of making really bad movies really well. And they’re very funny. And the way he talks about it too, they’re more like art crimes and I really admire that. Anyone that’s willing to go against the grain and willing to antagonize people I admire, because I think that sometimes takes more courage than just trying to be a visionary and going with the flow. So, Pink Flamingos for sure because it’s hilarious.
