LEVI ELDER DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMMING
@SLFS
avenues that is crammed full of vinyl. I’m at the point now that every shelf is crammed. I tried to make an agreement with myself that I wouldn’t acquire any more records until I had a place to put them. It’s kind of working. I also like to play video games, garden, cook, and dabble at the brewing of the beers in the basement. I’m a Virgo and I LOVE the beach.
How long have you worked here? I’ve only been working for SLFS for about four months, but Tori has been trying to recruit me for years. She finally won me over.
What are some of your hopes for the future of SLFS? My hope is that we can stay relevant and keep our place in the cultural landscape and community for decades to come.
What made you want to choose a career path in film? It’s funny, I actually didn’t. Film kind of found me. I had moved to New York in my late twenties (late 90s) and was just kind of being aimless. After about a year I had a friend that was working in film and she had a project in the Hamptons that her company needed help with in production. At first I was like “that sounds terrible.” Fortunately my friend was the voice of reason. She said “You’ve been living in New York for over a year; I don’t know what you’re doing for money and it’s none of my business but this could be a good option for you.” Needless to say I did the project and I’ve been working in film ever since, mostly. I’ve worked for a couple of film distributors and some festivals you may have heard of...
What is your favorite thing about working here? I love discovering new methods of film presentation, filmmakers, and actors. I know this will sound like such a cliche but there really is something quite revelatory about seeing an outstanding performance or a new accomplishment in filmmaking. It doesn’t happen very often but when it does it completely affects how you interact with the world and your view of yourself within that world. And in that moment you have the opportunity to create change. That, my friends, is the beauty of film.
What are some of your interests outside of film? I have a stupidly large music collection. It’s kind of a problem. I have an adorable little cottage in the
The sound design is almost a character on its own. The aural cues play a very significant role in the advancement of the characters and the story. It’s really such an elegant interweaving of multiple story lines and restrained performances that the film as a whole is really quite astonishing. What’s it about? It’s a science fiction love story about a charlatan, his victims, and a pig I love discovering farmer...but not really. new methods of You should go rent it film presentation, from the Tower.
filmmakers, and actors.
What is your favorite movie and why? Can anybody ever really answer this question definitively? Speaking to the previous question, one of the films that has affected me recently is Upstream Color. The film completely defies description but once seen you are left with an intrinsic knowledge of what the film is about, although it can’t be articulated.
