Professional Actors Workshop drops by with a Big Check “Our founder taught that you don’t just take; our ethic is, we give back,” says Lance Williams, Director of the Professional Actors Workshop, explaining his organization’s recent $5695 gift to Salt Lake Film Society. “We do a yearly project to help our community in some way. We’ve done different things over the years…” Williams says that this year PAW chose Salt Lake Film Society and they feel they’ve hit on a wonderful match for their philanthropy. By nature, SLFS supports actors by providing a home for independent film, a place where their work can be seen. By supporting SLFS, the students, in addition to helping out a community non-profit, are working to ensure a future for themselves, and for those who come after them. Williams holds great admiration for “Tad”, the founder of Professional Actors Workshop. Tadeusz Zbigniew Danielewski fought in the Polish Underground and was imprisoned at Buchenwald concentration camp during World War II. Then he studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art under Lawrence Olivier. Following that, he trained with Lee Strasberg at The Actors Studio and went on to start the Professional Actors Workshop. Tad’s former students include James Earl Jones, Martin Sheen, Sigourney Weaver, Jack Lemmon, Jessica Tandy, Mercedes Ruehl, and Ralph Waite Lance Williams became one of Tad’s students as well. Then he was handpicked by Danielewski to take over the Professional Actors Workshop. “I worked with Tad for six years and one day he looked me in the eye and said, ‘Lance, you are going to give back now.’” Williams knew what Tad

meant; he was to take over for the aging founder. A successful L.A.-based producer by day, Williams keeps running the PAW out of love for Danielewski and for the pleasure of the association with his students. He travels between L.A. and Salt Lake City, training actors and then returning to his producing work. Tad died in 1993, but his presence is felt to this day and his ethos continues to guide the group. “He taught us about two qualities he thought were essential in successful
actors, or people in general,” says Williams, “Quality X and Quality Y. Quality X for Tad was an aspiration to greatness, a dedication to becoming the very best. Quality Y is about inclusion, participation, community, and giving back.” More than a decade after his passing, SLFS is benefitting from the kindness of a concentration camp survivor and the people who keep his work and values alive. Many thanks to Lance Williams and all the talented folks at Professional Actors Workshop.

In his directorial debut, Mike Myers documents the astounding career of Hollywood insider, the loveable Shep Gordon, who fell into music management by chance after moving to LA straight out of college. Stuffed with fantastic archive footage the film traces Shep’s transformation from the 1970’s hedonist to today’s practicing Buddhist yearning for a family of his own.

MEXICAN INDEPENDENT FILM TOUR The Mexican Film Tour was such fun this year, especially our opening night red carpet premiere of Man Behind the Mask. El Hijo del Santo, a Lucha Libre wrestler beloved by the Mexican people and profiled in the film, and Gabriela Obregon, the director, traveled from Mexico for the premiere. The screening was well attended by Latino people in particular and the film seemed to fill them with great excitement and a sense of cultural pride. For the uninitiated, El Hijo’s quiet dignity, his sense of responsibility to live a life worthy of his fans’ respect, and the love the public has for him were truly wonderful to see. Don’t miss this annual event when it comes back next May.
