MARCH 2015 explore the culture
@SLFS
A C I ER G I N KOE DEVELOPMENT M A N A G E R
[We are] not just a theater, we are a cultural center for the community.
How long have you worked here? Since late October 2014.
What made you want to work for SLFS?
I am a cinephile and what better place to work than somewhere surrounded by like-minded colleagues and members? I basically get to talk about movies for a living and get films to the community they wouldn’t otherwise have a chance to see on the big screen.
What are your duties for SLFS/tell us a little more about what you do here?
I work to bring in funds that help our non-profit stay open and bringing the best films to our community. I also work with other entities in the community, sponsors that help me put together great private events for our vast array of members.
Has film always been important to you?
I grew up on set in London when my stepfather worked for the BBC. I can’t imagine ever working in another industry.
Erica helps at the Whole Foods Market 5% day.
What is your favorite part of working for SLFS?
I have been able to get to know my fellow staff and I have to say, you couldn’t find more creative and hard working people anywhere. Our members have also been such a thrill getting to know, I love bumping into them outside of work.
What are your hopes for the future of SLFS?
I aim to help us continue to grow all our programs and to extend the member base so more people realize who we really are, not just a theater, we are a cultural center for the community.
What is your favorite movie and why?
Twelve Angry Men. I dare a filmmaker to want to turn 120 minutes of drama and dialogue taking place in one room, into such a riveting story. Tremendous writing, acting and cinematography.
Anything else you would like to share/add? My desire for world peace.

SLFS DAY Erica Koenig, SLFS Development Manager, interviews David Redick, Marketing and Community Relations Specialist for Whole Foods Market at Trolley Square
The day before the Academy Awards were announced, Whole Foods employees wholeheartedly participated in SLFS Day: rolling out a huge red carpet, dressing in costume from favorite films, and creating film-related displays.
When and why did you start the 5% day? 5% Days or Community Giving Days is a way for every Whole Foods Market to make a meaningful, and positive impact in their community on a hyper-local level. As a company, Whole Foods Market is extremely philanthropic and this is just one of many ways we give back to our local and global communities.
What prompted you to partner with SLFS this month? How are missions similar in the community? We are big fans of SLFS here at Whole Foods Market, and a big supporter of the local arts. I feel that every city would benefit from having an organization like SLFS, as well as great independent theaters like Broadway and Tower. We want to do our part to keep organizations like these financially healthy for many years to come, so that our community can continue to enjoy the many benefits they offer to society.
What are your favorite movies of the past decade? Why do you feel film is important? That’s a tough question. My top 5 favorite films of the past decade in no particular order: 1. No Country For Old Men 2. Crazy Heart 3. The Dark Knight 4. Silver Linings Playbook 5. Wedding Crashers
What films have you seen at Broadway and/or Tower recently? Cold in July, Foxcatcher, Whiplash, Birdman
What movie would you like to have us screen in partnership with Whole Food? I would love to see a film that deals with hunger and/or poverty issues both in the U.S. and abroad because it is such a hot topic issue for Whole Foods Market. Our Whole Planet Foundation which raises money to fund microloans in high poverty stricken areas, was formed with the entrepreneurial spirt of Whole Foods Market, and is now in partnerships with microfinance organizations in 61 countries. Eighty-nine percent of loan recipients are women, who are able to take an average micro-loan of $186 and build a sustainable business to feed their entire family. Over 97% of micro-loans are paid back in full! Whole Planet Foundation was born out of Whole Foods Market desire to give something back to those who have helped us succeed, while focusing on the persistent problem of world poverty and hunger.
What future collaborations with SLFS do you envision?
Honorable Mention: District 9, An Education, The Departed, Juno, The Ides of March I think film is important because of the uniquely powerful Tori Baker, SLFS executive director, did her Oscar Party shopping at Whole Foods, and of course, she utilized her SLFS reusable shopping bag.
effect it has on society, across so many countries. People can take a story that may seem insignificant or irrelevant to an entire generation, put it under a magnify glass, elevate it, and make people pay attention again.
It is our goal to keep this partnership going year round! We would love to present screenings in the future, and hopefully a film festival later this year. Likewise, we hope to offer our customers and team members the opportunity to purchases tickets and memberships at our customer service booth.
Thanks to you and all that participated, we were able to raise close to $4,500!
