MAY 2014 explore the culture
TORIBAKER When did you start working at SLFS and in what capacity? I was brought on by the founding board of SLFS as Executive Director in 2004.
You’ve stayed here a long time. Non-profit work can be draining. What has kept you here? In July it will officially be 10 years. I love my job. I have a great loyalty to the mission and to the amazing staff and volunteers and board who have helped shoulder the burdens alongside me. It is never boring and my love for the art of cinema anchors me into the dedication and hard work it takes. We’ve faced many challenges of growth that force innovative thinking and creative problem-solving. We’re proud to be entrepreneurial and responsive to our community needs. We’re also pretty typical of any nonprofit in that we always seem to have fewer resources than the mission truly needs. We have been so fortunate to grow an amazing base of donor support to face challenges. Without our supporters, volunteers and dedicated staff growing alongside me it wouldn’t be the same. In the nonprofit sector there’s no set rules to how your job will start, evolve, or settle in. You typically take on leadership in a mission-based organization because you have a passion for that mission, not because you think to yourself, “I’d like to work four different jobs at once.” We’ve tried to ensure we focus on our core values, and one very important value is “Balance.” I take lifebalance to heart and hold the governing board as well as our fabulously dedicated staff accountable for recognition of the importance of balance in people’s lives. It’s not a perfect science (or easy) to remain balanced and fulfilled in work, but focusing on that value helps keep it at the forefront of how you view success in the workplace. Keeping an open dialogue about the importance of personal time allows for our internal culture to nurture and support each other.
We’ve made it through our grueling year-long fund raising campaign for digital equipment. What are the next potential challenges out there for SLFS? Facing so many industry changes has proven difficult at a time when demand for our content is bigger than ever. It’s also been exciting. Our next challenges will be solidifying how in this digital distribution realm we maintain cost thresholds for operations. SLFS is the only local bricks-andmortar home of an arts medium, with audiences the size we have, that completely operates our own facilities. This puts us in for a guaranteed increase of costs ratio for the future. Unlike more deeply subsidized arts organizations, our rents, venue improvements, and risks with regards to the facilities we operate are not buffered. If our roof leaks, or the pipes

break, we have SLFS is a national to have a builtin mechanism trailblazer among bricks of support that and mortar cinema allows us to respond. We’ve exhibitors. been good at that, but digital costs are changing the breakdown of operations. That challenge will make future endowment, investments, and smart-growth planning a necessity for success. It is the board’s goal that we remain innovative and responsive, but also that our sustainability is never placed at risk like it was with the digital shift. SLFS is a national trailblazer among bricks and mortar cinema exhibitors. Traditionally, art houses are cinema loving entrepreneurial nonprofits that scrape by. SLFS has had the fortune of operating two venues and seven screens, giving us the content base needed to grow audience, program, and economic impact. It’s inherent in our identity that we are the museum of cinema; we program what is current, historic, and in the zeitgeist of our local community. But, just because we self-identify so strongly, doesn’t mean that there’s a broader cultural understanding of what a home for cinema like ours does for a city. We need to be better at communicating our amazing accomplishments, programs, and mission impact, so that even a person who does not find cinema their preferred artistic outlet understands what our organization stands for. The core of our industry is altering, distribution is changing with digital technology, and while this is yet another challenge much like VHS or television was for cinemas, there’s an opportunity for SLFS to distinguish the theatrical movie-going experience from any other movie-viewing format in a way that engages individuals in becoming dedicated film lovers.
Can you talk about some of your favorite moments over the years?
Executive Director the Tower many, many years ago. The Tower is a venue that SLFS subsidizes through much of the success of the Broadway. Due to the age of the facility, it has many great challenges to a sustainable future. It’s always remained an important part of our founding story, but SLFS does not own the property. Unlike our long-term lease at the Broadway, the Tower renews with us much more frequently, creating a conversation about mission impact and realistic ability to keep the space operable. During such negotiations, I attended Rocky Horror Picture Show one night. I was watching the diverse individuals, the pure thrill of the crowd, and the dedicated staff all evening with a realization that the Tower has a very special place in this community. No other venue in the state diversifies offerings of films, audience, or creativity of programs more than the Tower. One night you can have Rocky and the next weekend you might see Sound of Music in an interactive singing sensational evening. The range is from classic screenings to cult, from contemporary to off-the-beaten path. Each attracts a vastly different audience, each serves an important quality-of-life offering in our community.
In our pilot year of Big Pictures Little People, a program that If you had a magic wand (or an unlimited budget) we do for under-served children between 2 and 7 years of what would you change? age, we showed a glorious print of My Neighbor Totoro. • I would flesh out benefits and retention packages for our amazing staff. You’ve never experienced anything like sitting in the dark • I would flesh out each department in our staffing so that with 300 children and watching the scene where Mae sits on the resources needed for programs and mission never Totoro’s belly as he breathes giant breaths. She giggles and waned and so each program could grow in community the auditorium erupts into honest laughter and joy. It was impact. one of the most moving screenings I’ve ever been in. • Make our venues match our mission more in cosmetic appearance and serviceability. Another moment would be during lease negotiations for

What qualities do you look for and appreciate most in your staff members? Unfortunately for SLFS staff, I worked at Southwest Airlines,a fortune 500 company that consistently has top ratings in both employee satisfaction and customer service. So customer service is in my blood and employee satisfaction is important to me. I’m a very practical leader. I’d much rather empower individuals to bring solutions to the table rather than just the problem. The challenge in a nonprofit environment is resource,

there’s always more work to be done than staff to fulfill it. My expectations are that people remain curious, always willing to learn, that they are interested in training and personal growth, that they advocate for what they need to grow and be fulfilled in their work. Another expectation is that they take it to heart when we say “everyone is empowered at SLFS to lead.” I expect good judgment and great customer service so that our mission thrives.

I get this question, I think of the films that impacted my life in some way, either in appreciation of the art form of cinema, or in my viewpoints, or in pure emotional experience. Those shift depending on the time in my life, but right now a few are: City Lights Giant Jeremiah Johnson The Apartment Apocalypse Now Aliens Passion of Joan of Arc Bicycle Thief Beasts of the Southern Wild My Neighbor Totoro Waking the Dead Stealing Beauty
ALSO COMING: REPO the genetic opera LIVE 5/30 & 5/31
Do you envision ever making your own film? Probably briefly at one point. I made one in college. I had two degrees, one in anthropology and one in film. I thought I’d perhaps make ethnographic films. But pretty quickly while working what they call the “festival circuit,” I found I loved working on the sidelines of filmmaking since that allowed me to love watching films as well as enjoying a lifestyle more permanent to that obsession.
What do you do for fun that’s completely separate from SLFS and film? I spend time with my family and I am a craft geek. I felt.
