FRONT OF HOUSE STAFFER
The first time I remember really being in awe of a movie was watching Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid...
ASHTON
by Annie Jenkins
What’s your official position?
What’s your favorite movie and why?
I… (long, questioning pause) ...Off to a bad start. (laughs) Front of house-type-stuff.
Do you always get a really negative response to that question? Because it’s a horrible question.
How long have you worked here?
Annie: (laughs) “Yep.”
A year and a half.
And you haven’t thought about rephrasing it?
How did you get your start here?
Annie: (more laughing) “Nope.”
Um, I went to the Broadway one day and they were hiring. I used to be a Chronik member, and then I saw that they were hiring and I applied. And I did such a fabulous job with my interview that they hired me a couple days later.
That’s just an impossible question, there’s no such thing!
Riley Ashton
Have you always loved film? Yeah, for as long as I can remember. The first time I remember really being in awe of a movie was watching Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid with my dad when I was probably seven or eight. So pretty much as long as I can remember.
What are your hobbies outside of the film society? I like to write and draw and read and watch an obscene amount of film and keep myself occupied and try not to think about poor life choices.
SEE THESE WHILE YOU STILL CAN!
Are there any projects you’re working on or
anything cool you want to tell us about? I’m trying to write a comic strip called Shovel Bear, about a bear that has shovels for hands. And I’m writing a movie with Conor Long that we will hopefully shoot some of in September. And other than that, just, you know, slayin’ it.
What’s your favorite aspect of working here? Just being surrounded by people who are as unhealthily obsessed with film as I am. And you know, especially when I’m working at the Tower, a part of my job is just getting to talk to people about movies, which is awesome.

Okay, it doesn’t have to be your favorite movie it can be a movie that’s really inspired you or a movie that had a huge impact on you! Those are better questions. [Both laugh] So the movie that’s been the most inspirational to me or eye opening to me was, um, I got to see Lawrence of Arabia, remastered, on the big screen, and that was one of the most electric and moving moments of my adult life. But the movie I’ve watched the most is probably Butch Cassidy. That’s the movie I can quote, I pretty much know that movie by heart. So those are probably two of my favorite movies.
What are your hopes for SLFS? That we can blossom into a beautiful flower with fancy technology.

Broadway Gets a Facelift We are finally able to make a number of improvements at the Broadway Centre Cinemas, thanks to a generous grant from our landlord, Hamilton Partners. We closed for four days at the end of August to begin the work, getting the loudest and messiest parts of the project taken care of. Now we are continuing the spruce-up while our venue is open. We hope to be finished entirely by mid-October. Come by and check on us from time to time as our new look emerges. Thanks for your patience and thanks to Hamilton Partners for the cash! In addition, we haven’t forgotten the Tower, which could really use a little attention, too. Watch for new paint and carpet there this fall.
