PETER BOGDANOVICH BY ASHLEIGH ALBRECHTSEN AND ALEX MILLER Salt Lake Film Society featured acclaimed director Peter Bogdanovich at two events this November that honored his work and contribution to film. Peter spoke at the Cinema Circle Focus Luncheon at the Leonardo, as well as the film screening and conversation of his legendary film The Last Picture Show later that evening at the Broadway Theater. One of the “New Hollywood” directors, Bogdanovich is known for his encyclopedic knowledge of film and his love for the cinema. His filmography includes The Last Picture Show, Mask, Paper Moon, and What’s Up Doc? His career spans further than directing alone, with noted success in acting, film criticism, writing, and movie programming. At the luncheon, Bogdanovich discussed his long-lived career in film and the relationships

he fostered with peers such as Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, and Roger Corman. Of these directors, he spoke to the value of their unique perspectives as filmmakers, saying it “was the personality of the director that informed their work.” As a dedicated figure in cinema for the past five decades, Bogdanovich spoke to the medium of film, its effect on people’s lives, and the role he—among others—has in that process. He touched on the significance of Old Hollywood films, noting that good directors “give people little tiny pieces of time that they will never forget,” adding, “what could be better?” He also addressed the dying art of theater-going and how the film industry has adapted to new modes and generations of viewership. The luncheon was a celebration of Salt Lake Film Society’s role sustaining this cinema experience.

Bogdanovich referenced Salt Lake Film Society as a community institution that “is important for the education of art for the younger people.” These narratives exclusive to early cinema can offer unique perspectives that help to shape viewers of today.
