MARA LEMESANY
ASSISTANT THEATER MANAGER How long have you worked for SLFS? About a year and a half now.
What made you want to apply?
I would read the SLFS newsletter on early mornings when I opened a restaurant alone, and I was remember being dazzled by the folks in the staff interviews. I wanted in on that, and of course I wanted a job where I could marinate in film and butter-flavored topping.
What is your favorite part of your job?
Holidays
The co-workers, no surprise. I was a bit afloat in Salt Lake and looking for people who could surround me in life and reflections of it (or in art I guess!). Working here has opened friendships and interests that mean an awful lot to me.
How would you say film impacts your life?
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 24
Well, I like that film gives me a tussle. Sometimes, it shows me things I’ll never know for myself, which can be wrenching in that I’m-so-small-the-world-is-so-big sort of way. And then, I wouldn’t want to be without it for the same reason. It’s voyeuristic despair and pleasure pressed together.

smitten by things made with that mix of impulse and devotion. The latest was Thunder Mountain in Nevada.
What are your hopes for the future of SLFS?
I would love for the Tower take on more repertory programming and play up the lovely ramshackle arthouse vibe that is part and parcel of such a place. Overall I think the Film Society offers something pretty special to Salt Lake, and I hope more people find us and grow a deep love verging on dependency.
What is your favorite movie and why?
Everyone on staff has heard me blab endlessly about it, so they already know it’s American Honey. It’s a drive through skies cracked wide open and towns totally run into the ground, and you’re following these amazing kids through it all that nobody else has taken a chance on, or maybe even a second look at. It makes me feel like the world couldn’t be anything but a damn messy tangle of halting potential and grime and offset beauty, and you have to sort of be in reverence to it, sort of realize you’re on your own and totally lost to life. 071 forever.
I’ve been hunting out a lot of folk/outsider art, in books or in the middle of nowhere. I’m easily
