to take action politically or personally, then that is essential viewing to me. If you could be working anywhere else in the world, what would you want to be doing? Hosting one of those shows on the Food Network where I travel the world making really corny jokes and eating amazing food. Then I’ll relax in my beach mansion while floating down my personal lazy river, because that IS happening.

FRONT OF HOUSE STAFF How long have you worked for the Film Society? About 6 months What drew you to apply here? I’ve been a long time patron of the film society, and my friend and fellow Coworker J. told me there was an opening and I never looked back!

SEE THESE WHILE YOU STILL CAN

Why is film important to you? So many reasons. My family is filled with film buffs, and when I was about 13 years old, we got digital cable and had access to IFC and the Sundance channel. Those stations were ALWAYS on in my home. I’d always been entertained by movies as a kid, but suddenly I was watching movies that were changing the way I thought and interacted with the world around me. I’m an actor, so it all comes down to the emotion involved. If a film can bring you to tears or make you feel euphoric or want

What is your favorite part of your job here? This is the most common answer, but the people. Co workers, volunteers, patrons. I’m so lucky to be surrounded by passionate and creative people and to talk about film and call it a job. We really are a family here. What are your hopes for the future of SLFS? I really would love to see SLFS become an essential part of the Salt Lake City arts scene and to be integrated into all parts of the community. I love this city and Salt Lake has so much untapped talent, and I’d love to see people coming to our theaters and leaving with new ideas and the inspiration to create something of their own.

What is your favorite movie and why? Oh great, THIS question. My answer has always been REQUIM FOR A DREAM. I first watched it when I was 14, and it changed what film meant to me in a BIG way. The experimental camera work and “music video” jump cut style really sucked my teenage mind in from the first moments, and all of a sudden I found my heart being torn out and violently stomped on. For me, it’s a perfect movie, because every single aspect of film making is utilized to a very high degree, and no matter who you are, that story WILL hit you hard and make you feel a lot of things.

FEBRUARY 2016 E X P L O R E T H E C U LT U R E @ S L F S using volunteers. Luke, Rocky Anderson’s son—so handsome, trained me. I came to the meeting because I was retired and had been a movie lover my whole life. I’ve always worked Sundays. At first it started as a two hour shift, and then Jessie and I had the bright idea to combine our shifts and alternate weeks.

DIXIE GAISFORD VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Interviewed by Erin Emerson, Volunteer Coordinator When I approached Dixie to interview her for this month’s Volunteer Spotlight, she said something to the extent of, “Oh, I’m not sure… I’m just not that interesting…are you sure you want to interview me?” After interviewing her, I beg to differ. We’ll let you, dear readers and members, decide.

How did you get started volunteering with SLFS? I had volunteered several places and was looking for something interesting to do. I saw a little ad in the paper, the Trib I think, and came to the first volunteer meeting, in 2001, when SLFS became a nonprofit and started

Outside of film, what are your hobbies? I have so many hobbies! I really do read a LOT. I love it. I can’t get enough. I love astrology. I love to knit and make things. I have a puppy, so that’s a hobby. (I used to have two, but this one’s twin sister died a year ago.) I’m learning, just a tiny bit, to make jewelry. I had some fun travels when I first retired. I studied shamanism, including studying the spirituality of our bodies, going to weekend retreats, doing sweats, playing around, growing into myself. I’m kind of weird. I’m really doing life my way and I don’t know what that is, I’m just continually doing it. It opens us to new ways of building the world. What is your favorite thing about volunteering here at SLFS? I love the people that show up here. The Broadway is full of familiar faces, and anyone coming to the movies is a happy person. I get to greet them, see their smiling, joyful face and that is a beautiful thing to witness. I love to visit with the cuties that work here. I get to read. I love being able to bring my friends to the movies. It’s an occasion to go get breakfast and share my passes. What is your favorite movie and why? Well, it’s not really a movie…but an actor. There was a single time that I went completely irrational. It was a wonderful, wild, crazy time right after I retired, and I found Russell Crowe. I discovered his movies, Australia, astrology and it was a major developmental life stage for me. I went to Australia twice, studied astrology there, led there through a door called Russell Crowe (including Gladiator and everything else he’s done), and it was crazy, life affirming and wonderful. For a couple of years, I drove to see his band, 30 Odd Foot of Grunts, and it was the first time I drove to a big city, finding my way, then doing it again and again, stopping and

talking with people. He is a beautiful man. What are your hopes for SLFS? I hope we keep on keeping on and growing. We have the best movies in the city. This is an endeavor built out of love, not money making. If we didn’t have this theatre, it would be a tremendous loss to this city. I wish for SLFS to grow and bring movie lovers together. It’s my privilege to be here and I always feel like that every time I come. And just because so many staff members love Dixie, they wanted to share their 2 cents about Dixie as well: Cleo Ricks: I love Dixie! She’s very sweet, but also really professional, organized and always makes sure I know what’s going on. She’s one of my favorite volunteers. She has so much energy. She’s amazing! I’m very impressed with her. Samuel Trail: She’s probably like the best volunteer, honestly. She has such a professionalism about her. Marissa Beckstrom: She’s very friendly and interested in getting to know me. Not a lot of people take the time to do that. Thank you so much, Dixie, for your contributions to our organization and our community. We are a better organization with you as a part of our family. From, a very appreciative SLFS Staff. As I write this, I feel honored that we have such an amazing volunteer like Dixie. I’m also excited thinking about the upcoming Volunteer Spotlight articles yet to come with so many more delightful people to write about in upcoming issues and opportunities to recognize more of our wonderful volunteers here at SLFS. If you are interested in volunteering with us, please sign up and register at: www.shiftboard.com/slfs/register.html or contact our Volunteer Coordinator at erinemerson@saltlakefilmsociety.org or 801-503-9434.

The Film Society is in the year-long process of retiring the membership program and moving towards a “Supporter Program” that better fits the needs of our film community and our operation.

What was wrong with the old program? It was a 15-year-old program that was developed at a time when we simply needed get people in the door. The program is now at a stage where it is time to evolve it to better build our long-term sustainability. Of course, we will honor all memberships until their expiration date.

Why is the program changing? It is not sustainable. With industry changes and rising operating costs, we want to protect the Film Society’s mission for now and the future. We want to build on our current growth and success. We need to move towards a supporter program that will allow us to celebrate and acknowledge our donors without creating additional costs so that we can best serve the community.

What will the new program be like? Our new program contains new options as well as added social benefits. Our goal is to continue to serve and grow the local film community. We will know what it looks like by March 1st.

How can I find out more? We will be providing updates as we get them through all our usual channels – website, weekly emails, on-screen ads, radio, etc. Current members will receive a letter from our executive director at the end of February. And the new program will be unveiled March 1. If you have questions or comments, please email Susan Tive at: susan_tive@saltlakefilmsociety.org
