BARB GUY
DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC RELATIONS How long have you worked for SLFS?
such a joy for me too. I officiate at weddings now and then; I’ve married a number people including several same-sex couples. But first and foremost, my life is great because I have the coolest husband. We’ve been together 30 years and we have a cozy life with some sweet kitties and dogs in a 106 year-old house where there’s always a new project that needs to get done!
Almost five years.
What did you study in school or what other work have you done?
I did a dual major in Political Science and Women’s Studies with a minor in Race, Gender, and Culture. After college I was a Scoville Peace Fellow in Washington, DC. For ten years I was an Op-Ed columnist for the Salt Lake Tribune, which I loved. I’ve had corporate management jobs and I’ve been lucky enough to work at some of Salt Lake’s great non-profits. I also worked in the Mayor’s office long ago and I was a DJ for about 10 years as well. My friend Paige and I had a little music fanzine we put out for a while and the first time journalism and film melded for me was when I wrote a review of Stop Making Sense in 1984.
What made you want to apply?
I’ve loved SLFS from the beginning. My husband Chris and I have spent literally more than a thousand happy hours at the Broadway and Tower. (Not counting work time, which is happy time as well.) I’ve always felt really proud of SLFS and I was already being an advocate in my own way, so joining the staff was an easy transition and I’m so happy to be here.
What is your favorite part of your job?
I love to hear people’s stories about SLFS – why they love the organization, what their wishes are for us going forward, what they’d change if they could. It’s a pleasure to represent SLFS in the community and interact with so many people who really care about SLFS. I work with a lot of amazing people who have spent their careers working in film and the non-profit arts milieu and I learn so much from them all. Also, when one

What are your hopes for the future of SLFS?
works for a smallish organization, it’s easier to see your impact and be able to tell that you’re helping in concrete ways.
How would you say film impacts your life?
I love film as an art form, a communication tool, a teacher of empathy, a way to do activism, and as an escape. Filmmakers entertain us, educate us, and challenge us to act. Also, when I was doing chemotherapy and I didn’t have any hair and I felt really crappy the Broadway was about the only public place I would visit. It was such a comfort and a refuge. As I walk through the Broadway lobby today, I get the impression we’re serving other people in that way, too.
Tell us about your life outside of SLFS. What do you enjoy doing?
As a non-profit arts organization we face a number of challenges, most of them brought on by technological and social change, such as how and where people want to watch film. My wish is that we always have enough passionate patrons, interested filmgoers, and extraordinary staff members to help us through our changing choppy waters.
What is your favorite movie and why?
I grew up as a non-Mormon only child in SLC in the 60s and 70s, which gave me a profound sense of being Other that I never would have had growing up in a less homogeneous place and time. Maybe for this reason, I like stories about diversity. I gravitate toward serious consciousness-raising films that can tear your heart out while they educate you like Sin Nombre, Mudbound, The Life and Times of Harvey Milk, and Fruitvale Station. I also like more whimsical fish-out-of-water stories like Harold and Maude, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, and Captain Fantastic. Then again, I love a good heroic journalism story like Spotlight or The Killing Fields and inspirational films like He Named Me Malala.
Travel is big for me; Chris and I like to visit faraway places whenever possible. Friends are
