What is your favorite part about working for SLFS? I don’t even have to think on this one! Definitely the people I work with. There is such a wonderful feeling of family and community at SLFS. Everyone is so different from each other, but we all respect and embrace that. I feel like I learn something new every time I work.

FRONT OF HOUSE STAFF

How long have you worked for the Film Society? I started just before Sundance in January, so almost a year! What made you want to work here? Whenever I would come see a movie at the Broadway or Tower, I had the best time! Everyone was so friendly and had such vast film knowledge. So I said to myself, why not spend as much time here as possible? If you weren’t working at SLFS, what would you be doing? Actually, by day I do social work at The Road Home. I work in the Family Housing program. But other than work, I am a big fan of eating delicious food and spending time with the wonderful people in my life. I also love to read and, of course, watch great films. What’s the most memorable experience you’ve had with film? This is so hard because films can provide such a transformative experience, and I

am always seeing movies that give me a new outlook on life. But looking back, I have to say seeing Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone for the first time. I think I was only in 5th grade when it came out, so I felt so cool to be seeing a midnight showing. Midnight! The experience was magical because I was seeing something from my imagination appear on the big screen. I went home and waited for my Hogwarts acceptance letter for...a few years.

What are your hopes for the future of SLFS? I want everyone in Salt Lake City to see the Tower for the gem that it is. The theater was built in 1928 and is so fun to watch movies in. I’d like to see a bigger repertory collection and also new movies that are doing well, so they bring in the crowd the Tower deserves. Plus if you can’t find a specific movie anywhere? Guess what! We have an incredible collection of rentals at the Tower as well. What is your favorite movie and why? Ah, the dreaded question! I would probably say Roman Holiday. Every time I watch it I am captivated by the story, even though I know what’s going to happen. And my favorite part is the very end where your heart is breaking, and Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck share this look. This great look. This look that both shatters your soul and makes you feel like you are there with them, falling in love. I’d also like to add Raiders of the Lost Ark, because well.... Harrison Ford.

DALE STROBEL VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Interviewed by Erin Emerson, Volunteer Coordinator

What is your favorite movie and why?

Why should staff have all the fun in each newsletter? Here’s a chance to meet some of our wonderful volunteers, at long last. For our very first volunteer spotlight, we are over the moon to introduce one of our star volunteers, and SLFS surrogate mom, Dale L Strobel. Not only does she remember and celebrate each and every staff member’s birthday, she even attends our school recitals and honors our accomplishments. We hope you are as thrilled to “meet” her as we are to have her be a part of our family.

This is such a hard question! I should really make a list. I love so many films it’s really hard to narrow them down. I’ve always been meaning to figure this out. It’s bad for a film person not to know this. Let’s see… One of my favorites is Harold & Maude. Its quirkiness appeals to me. I also really liked Beasts of the Southern Wild. I saw it like ten times. I actually made a list of my least favorite movies, can I tell you those? There’s The Brown Bunny, Trash Humpers—which I sat through on a dare, Bellflower Boys (which I absolutely hated)… those were such horrible films. That is what being a true supporter of film is: sitting through all the films, especially the bad ones and not walking out.

What brought you to volunteering here at SLFS?

What are your future hopes for Salt Lake Film Society?

I’ve always loved film. I haven’t missed a single film since the day the Broadway became part of SLFS. I will reach ten years of volunteering here next month. I came here because I love film and I’ve never been so excited about anything else in this city. SLFS has been a godsend in this community.

I hope it can continue to grow. SLFS is a vibrant part of our community. I’d like us to continue to express care about our patrons. I just want SLFS to stay here; it would be a huge tragedy for our community if [SLFS] were no longer here. I think I’d have to move away if this place ever closed. As a social worker, having worked with people who are largely sick or dying, volunteering at the Broadway is the biggest reprieve in my life. This keeps my life in balance.

Outside of film, what are your hobbies? I love the arts in this community. I love going to the symphony. I am a member of the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. I love supporting local art and music. I have season tickets to Salt Lake Acting Company and Plan B Theatre. I love theatre, which is one of the reasons I love film so much, in terms of the acting. I also love to sing. I sought out my church because of the music and I sing there now.

What is your favorite aspect of volunteering here? My favorite thing here is the people. I love the kids who work here. They’re like my own, they’re like family. Also, the people who are

6

the Friday night regulars are some of my favorite reasons I love the Friday night shift. One of those regulars gave me this beautiful scarf I’m wearing right now. Overall, it’s a wonderful group of people here that just mesh, and I just love them. The staff all love film so much. It’s really fun to be in a place where everybody loves the same thing you love.

We believe that sharing the best in cinema, whether classic or contemporary, well-known or under-theradar, is a powerful way to enrich and enlighten our community. For 15 years Salt Lake Film Society has been the home of independent film in our city. We operate seven screens, 365 days a year at Broadway Centre Cinemas and the historic Tower Theatre. The magic of the big screen and the value of the communal cinema experience is more important than ever in our world of media overload. We are dedicated to showing high quality, diverse, relevant cinema. What we do is about more than movies. We create community, share stories, educate, and enlighten. SLFS changes lives one film and one filmgoer at a time.
