AWARD SEASON IS HERE
BY LEVI ELDER DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMMING AND DIGITAL INITIATIVES
At long last dear patrons, awards season is upon us. I’m not going to suggest that you abandon your activism in the coming months but I am suggesting you augment it with an Oscar pool. Or even a pool for my favorite SLFS TITLES AT THE GOLDEN GLOBES awards, the Independent Spirit. When I lived in New TH 20 CENTURY WOMEN (2) York I got a ballot for the Gotham Awards. And of CAPTAIN FANTASTIC (1) course, being embedded ELLE (2) in the film community, I FENCES (2) paid close attention to HELL OR HIGH WATER (3) friends and colleagues who were nominated for SAG JACKIE (1) (Screen Actors Guild), PGA LA LA LAND (7) (Producers Guild of America), LION (4) SWG (Screen Writers Guild), LOVING (2) and even Razzies, the dubious distinction of ‘worst’ films. My MANCHESTER BY THE SEA (5) point being, of the 336 films MOONLIGHT (6) released in 2016, only one will NOCTURNAL ANIMALS (3) win best picture.

The unofficial start of award season is the announcement of the Golden Globe nominees. These are the awards given by the

Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). Although these are considered to be prestigious awards, and even more often thought to be Oscar predictors, they were often criticized by domestic film writers because the HFPA, at one point, was revealed to be a kind of Ozian behind the curtain organization of about 15 people, that were largely comprised of unknowns from the likes of the Turkish version of the National Enquirer. I digress. Award season kicks off with the Golden Globe nominees! One particularly good thing about the ‘Globes,’ like the Independent Spirit Awards, is they intentionally ignore big budget studio fare and pay tribute to independent, foreign, and art house films that it is our pleasure to present to you here at Salt Lake Film Society. At this writing the Golden Globe nominees have just been announced and all but two or three have screened or are currently screening at our venues or over the course of 2016. As your humble programmer it gives me no small pleasure at being such a terrific prognosticator but it also humbles me to be able to present to our community such incredible art work that is intelligent, beautiful, and can even inspire activism. Please consider becoming a member of our Red Carpet Club this season, or even maybe a gift or twelve (winky face), to ensure we can stay an inspiration in your community!
