WILEY ADAMS FRONT OF HOUSE STAFF How long have you worked for SLFS? Since October of 2017
What made you want to apply?
After my 3rd watch of Ruben Ostlund’s THE SQUARE, I made my 2nd attempt to apply, and I guess Stephen gave in.
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of the job is preparing people for films I truly love, like Good Time, Phantom Thread, or Lady Bird. Like when You Were Never Really Here was showing, I told everyone it’s like a puzzle the director wants you to solve. I didn’t have that mindset going in and I was foolishly disappointed after the first viewing.
How would you say film impacts your life?
Film acts as a portal into other people’s lives and situations for me to experience and empathize with. I think it’s important to seek out films made by people with lives very different from your own because it keeps you from being ignorant.
Tell us about your life outside of SLFS. What are some of your hobbies?
Outside of the SLFS, I’m a student and a filmmaker. I’ve been learning at SLCC, which has a fantastic production program; storytelling and theory, however, is something I’ve had to seek out on my own. At the moment, I’m in preproduction for a short film I’ve spent the last 15 months writing. It’s about two ghosts, Joe and Keith, who have their own special struggles with living up to Western masculinity, and the hatred, violence, and ignorance that
2
sadly sometimes comes with that. I also love love love to draw.
What are your hopes for the future of SLFS?
I hope that people continue to come here and learn about the world outside Utah. It’s a very easy state to seclude your thoughts in. I love being able to walk into any of our theaters and have no idea what to expect. Rotten Tomatoes and the like have really clouded a lot of people’s judgement, and that’s dangerous for everyone because if we as conscious people can’t be malleable and experience new, uncomfortable, disturbing stories, then we won’t know how to deal with our own disturbances.
WE LIKE YOU! LIKE US TOO?
Follow us on social media and keep updated with all things SLFS
What is your favorite movie and why?
My favorite films have been Rango, The Graduate, Magnolia, and now Daddy Long Legs. It was the first film directed by the Safdie brothers, who recently did the best film of 2017, Good Time. I love it because it is about a loving father who is clumsy, and unlucky despite his good intentions (like me!). He’s also tragically selfish, but the film is always observant, whimsical, and beautiful. Everyone should seek it out.
