ELENA ROGERS
FRONT OF HOUSE STAFFER
How long have you worked for SLFS? 9 months
What made you want to apply? I started going to late night screenings at the Tower about 4 years ago, and have been in love ever since. The charm of that old theatre and the romantic notion of almost being a part of the midnight movie circuit floored me, and I couldn’t imagine working at a better place.
What is your favorite aspect of working here? My co-workers. I love how ardently everyone on staff consumes and creates art, I love their eclectic tastes and all of the film, literature, and music they’ve turned me on to, and I love going to late night screenings with them and giving movies the Mystery Science Theater treatment. (Our roller derby team is great, too.)
Why is film important to you? Film is a really unique medium. It’s an amalgamation of so many different forms of art and the number of people and amount of time that must be dedicated to even the most lowbudget of films is stunning. Film is also a very visceral medium, more so than most because it’s primarily visual, the logical extension of a painting. A potent film has a lot in common with a subliminal message, and I’m fascinated by how we interact with ideas, how the conceptual can manifest into the physical due to its influence on us.
What do you like to do during your free time? Literature is my primary love and I spend as much time with it as I can. I write more or less frequently, go to open mics, beg for internships at local bookstores and take every book I meet to bed with me.
2
What are your hopes for the future of SLFS? I would like to see us continue our collaborations with local businesses and filmmakers, but I would also like to see us expand as a center for people in the community to voice their opinions, share their art, and learn and grow from each other.
What is your favorite movie and why? There are a few. THE BLOOD OF A POET for its elegant surrealism and visual metaphors. GONE WITH THE WIND for its lush set design and crippling performances. Suzan Pitt’s JOY STREET for its blend of mediums and unflinching examination of despair. BIGGER THAN LIFE for its stunning cinematography, use of color, and screen time allotted to James Mason, and 1984 for the love of John Hurt, the Eurythmics, and Big Brother.

The Tunnel
FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMMING
LEVI ELDER
As we move into the dog days of summer I’m sure you’ll be wanting to spend as much time as you can in our gloriously air conditioned theaters! If that’s not enough enticement, let me give you a quick rundown of highlights for the coming month. In July we’ll have what may be the scariest film I’ve ever seen, THE WAILING (Goksung). Korean director, Hing-jin Na weaves an intricate tale that starts as a bucolic comedy but evolves into a multi-trope balancing act with edge-of-your-seat twists and a satisfying if somewhat literal ending. Be prepared for zombies, ghosts, demons, pestilence, shamans, witches, mayhem, and plenty of blood.

JULY 2016 Also in July we have the mind-bending TICKLED. This doc explores the underground culture of tickle torture. This film unfolds from where it starts as a lighthearted puff piece on an innocuous fetish into a sinister life-threatening hydra-like organization with a conclusion that must been seen to believed. As a special treat for all of us Sweetie Darlings, ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS: The Movie hits our Great Salt Lake shores from the UK. Eddie and Patsy are up to their old tricks when they get into a particularly sticky wicket by accidentally killing Kate Moss. AbFab behind bars? How will they ever get out of this one? By becoming fugitives fleeing to the south of France, darling. On September 8, we’ll have a one-night-only screening of the new Nick Cave film ONE MORE TIME WITH FEELING, directed by Andrew Dominik. The film will play globally this one night as a preview of Nick’s new album, Skeleton Tree. This will be the first chance the public will have to hear the tracks! General admission and VIP tickets are on sale now at SLFS.org or at the box offices of the Broadway or Tower. I want to give a personal thanks to all of our new Red Carpet Club patrons and past members that have transitioned into the new program. Because of your support we’re able to serve and support diverse communities throughout the valley and filmmakers from around the world with programs like our Czech Film Tour. If you’ve yet to sign up you can become a supporter for as little as $5 a month. Visit our site or ask any SLFS team member for more details and they can sign you up on the spot! Don’t forget that our Summer Late Night series runs every weekend through Labor Day for all of your indie/alternative/cult needs. One of my favorites, VIDEODROME (July 22-24), starring punk rock icon Debbie Harry, continues to remain relevant as an allegory of media addiction, madness, and how it can bend our thoughts into believing propagated untruths. Perhaps it’s even more relevant during this particular political season.
ONE MORE TIME WITH FEELING
