SAMUEL TRAIL

FRONT OF HOUSE STAFF How long have you worked for SLFS?

I have worked at SLFS for almost two years I think? Linear time is a hard concept for me.

What made you want to apply?

I was working as a barista and my partner J Abubo ,who was already working here, recommended it to me. I also remember seeing Pan’s Labyrinth here in 2006 with my older sister and since then I knew this place had good film.

What is your favorite part of your job?

You know I think just being around a staff that really loves art and enjoys critiquing film really gets me to appreciate it more. It makes me consider angles and viewpoints that never occurred to me and challenges me. Also when we have a free moment to just talk about why a certain film is great or why it is hot garbage, those are my absolute favorite.

How would you say film impacts your life?

For most of my life I would say I have been a tourist with art, never engaging deeply and meaningfully with it. However since working here and being surrounded by such passionate and verbose people, it has taught me the skills to see what elements make film in particular special. I can occupy a characters mind space and empathize with them. I can see how the framing of a shot invokes a particular feeling. Like everything in film is there for a reason, its not happenstance, its intentional. That intentional vision by filmmakers conveys to us their perspective and we empathize with them, the characters and the creator.

KUE D7 presents

Tell us about your life. What are some of your hobbies?

I’m pretty low-key so I stay in and watch movies or play video-games a lot. I cook just about everyday and enjoy it, especially baking. Like I’m basically a grandma since I like staying in and baking assorted treats like cookies and pie for my partner and I.

What are your hopes for the future of SLFS?

KUED

I hope that we keep growing and trying new things. Since we are a relatively young organization we can define who we are and what makes us special and unique in our community. We control the script.

Celebrates the Arts

From drama to opera, dance and art, no other channel brings more arts and cultural programming to Utah than KUED.

What is your favorite movie and why?

I can never answer these since my current favorite changes all the time especially since I’m still discovering new film constantly. PERFECT BLUE by Satoshi Kon, THE THING by John Carpenter, and BRICK by Rian Johnson are films that always come to mind first so I will say those. Oh and THE WAILING by Na Hong-Jin was my favorite from last year!

Twenty years ago this summer, a little book from an unknown author was published. A little book about a little boy who lived under the stairs. Over the next ten years we would follow him to school where he would learn about his past and his secrets. When the tales leapt to the silver screen we watched as the little boy grew up. We watched as the films grew up, became more complex, and dealt with darker material. We watched and grew ourselves, over twenty years. Join us the weekend of July 29 though 31 to not only celebrate the publishing of the books, but this little boy’s birthday. We will screen all eight films in chronological order. We encourage you to attend in your dress robes, your shabby robes, or shorts and flip-flops. You will be sorted upon your first screening and receive a commemorative pin of your house. There may even be prizes for your robes, trivia, quidditch expositions, and you may even receive a special prize for presenting your ticket stubs from all eight of the movies after the final film.
