MARCH 2016 E X P L O R E T H E C U LT U R E @ S L F S
JACOB HALL FRONT OF HOUSE STAFF How long have you worked for the Film Society?
A little over a year. My first day at the Tower was New Year’s Eve 2014.
What drew you to apply here?
My friend Betty, who used to be a manager here, told me about the job. I’d been coming to the Tower and Broadway pretty regularly since moving here from Arizona. I used to go to movies by myself, while my friends went to singles ward.
Why is film important to you?
Film has been an important form of escape, but has also been helpful in teaching me about the world around me and all the cool things in it. It’s been great taking part in Sundance every year, seeing things I would’ve never been able to see anywhere else and meeting some of my favorite directors. There are so many new filmmakers with ideas that have me excited about the future of cinema.
If you could be working anywhere else in the world, what would you want to be doing? I love playing music with my friends and have gone on a few small tours. Maybe getting to play shows in other countries would be the dream, but I love living in Salt Lake.
Tell us a bit more about your band and what draws you to much!
I play drums for two bands, Bat Manors and The Circulars. Both bands have new albums coming out soon that I am super excited for my friends to hear! I also help run a small record label called Dirty Provo, which was started when I was living in Provo a few years ago. We’ve been able to release 10 albums, 2 compilations and a 7’’ single for Record Store Day. Playing in bands has forced me to be more outgoing and I get a lot of satisfaction out of promoting my friends’ work.
What is your favorite part of your job here?
What are your hopes for the future of SLFS?
I just hope people keep coming to the movies. The Broadway and the Tower are such magical places in my mind, and I hope more people become aware of what we’re doing.
What is your favorite movie and why?
My favorite movie is Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker because of the way it makes me feel. The mood, mystery and visual language put me in a heavenly headspace. I go back and forth between that and my other faves Blade Runner and Alien.
Hanging out with people I really look up to and admire. My friends at the film society are all smart, wonderful people who really care about each other. I feel very lucky to be a part of it.

AMANDA WALTON VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Interviewed by Erin Emerson, Volunteer Coordinator This month’s volunteer spotlight is about our amazing intern, Amanda Walton. She approached me at a New Volunteer Orientation a few months ago, and asked if we ever needed interns. With no expectations of class credit or compensation, she volunteered her services so that she could learn more about film and working in an art house theatre. She is truly a delight to work with, is upbeat, outgoing, and refreshingly excited about every detail about SLFS. In addition to her help here behind the scenes, she is one of our off-site outreach contacts and helps coordinate SLFS volunteers at the Salt Lake Winter Farmer’s Market.
Tell me a little about yourself. I go to Highland High. I’m a Junior there. At school, I’m the Vice President of the Film Club. We do lots of filmmaking, and watch a lot of films too. We also make videos just for fun together (not just as Film Club projects). How did you get started volunteering with SLFS? I saw ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL over the summer and it was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. I hadn’t been to the Broadway much, so I checked out the website. I wanted to get involved, came to orientation and started from there. What is your favorite thing about volunteering with SLFS? Well, getting free movie passes is great, but I’m not just here to get stuff. I’m really learning a lot here. Film is what I want to do in life, so I feel like I am getting a head start with what I want to do while I’m young. SLFS is a really great organization and I love the people here!

What is your favorite film and why? AMERICAN PSYCHO. I know it sounds strange because I’m not supposed to be seeing rated R movies. In the eyes of my friends and family I’m supposed to be innocent... but AMERICAN PSYCHO is amazing! Outside of film, what are your hobbies? Haha! More film! And I love running, hiking, spending time with my family… We play lots of games, have meals together and hang out a lot. I also have a lot of fun adventures with friends. We’ll go downtown and explore. For example, a few weeks ago, we tested a City Creek Canyon legend. Supposedly, if you put powdered sugar on the back of a car, and put the car in neutral, the car is supposed to be able to go uphill. There was a bus crash there years ago, and the ghost children push the car. You should be able to see little ghost handprints in the powdered sugar as if they’re helping push the car uphill. We tried it, and the car went uphill a little and then started to go backwards. There was a car behind us, so we had to stop and it didn’t work. But we tried and it was fun! Another time, we went to a makeout parking spot, put all the seats back, and jumped up and down and screamed in the car. No one noticed or looked, but it was fun. What are you hopes for SLFS in the future? I hope that more people know about the Broadway and Tower theatres and come here. I don’t even go to other movie theatres anymore, and I don’t pay attention to commercial films— only independent ones. SLFS has changed my way of thinking about film. I took my family to see HAIL, CAESAR! My younger brother hasn’t really ever seen independent films, but I’ve seen it twice already and I loved it. The more I see independent films, the more it changes my way of thinking about film and my expectations for film for the better. I love working here!! If you are interested in volunteering with us, please sign up and register at: www.shiftboard.com/slfs/register.html or contact our Volunteer Coordinator at erinemerson@saltlakefilmsociety.org or 801-503-9434.
