Seeing movies at SLFS and just staying home listening to records and writing. I also read, I collect records, I try not to stagnate creatively.
What is your favorite part about working for SLFS?
Well, my first shift was June 26th, so almost a year!
Many things, but the people. I love everyone I work with. I also am in a passionate open relationship with the Tower.
What made you want to work here?
What are your hopes for the future of SLFS?
How long have you worked for SLFS?
Israel dressed as ‘Lolita’ for our SLFS Kubrick-themed holiday party
If you weren’t working at SLFS, what would you be doing?
Pretty much everything. I’m not from Utah, I moved here last June. The summer before, however, I was visiting Salt Lake for a few months and I just fell in love with the Tower and the Broadway, though I had no idea they were connected. I think it’s a pretty classic SLFS employee story to try to apply at the Tower and get sent to the Broadway. On the way there, I was thinking “Oh, I’ll never get hired here, only cool people work here. I’ll only get hired if the application is a film quiz or something”. And lo and behold, the application was a quiz of sorts! All those lonely nights in high school staying home watching three movies in a row finally paid off.
Well, there are both practical goals that I am working towards, such as making the Tower more event based, podcasting, blogging and creating a tight knit collective of artists around SLFS (Cashiers of Cinema), but there is also the dream of SLFS being this artistic empire, a “Deathstar” of aesthetic force that I think many others also want it to be. I honestly feel like SLFS is bigger than all of us.
What’s one of your favorite movies and why?
ONE?! How hierarchical! In rebellion I will have to narrow it down to five unthinkable options: PINK FLAMINGOS: a classic, powerful, all-out aesthetic warfare on morals and ethicality. THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: the greatest Why is film important to you? horror film of all time, grit and grime caked Well first: all art is important to me. I believe under all-American fingernails. BREATHLESS: in what I call Radical Aestheticism, that art the greatest film of all time. MULHOLLAND is the most important thing in the world; that DRIVE: David Lynch has directed three perfect the universe is devoid of inherent meaning or films, (ERASERHEAD and BLUE VELVET purpose and that art is humankind’s attempt to being the others), but MULHOLLAND DRIVE make something out of the void. So I’m really is something else. It is black magic, a short passionate about a lot of different mediums, glimpse into something much bigger, much more and have a passing interest and knowledge of most major art forms. Film, however, has always terrifying than our world or state of being. THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW: Everything been part of my “big three”: mediums that I I am now I owe to this film; my gender identity feel I know and care the most about, literature (fluid as a waterfall, queer as a three dollar bill), and popular music being the other two. Film, in my belief in rock ‘n’ roll (that it should be played a way, is the perfect postmodern art form. It is both rooted in classical aesthetics but steeped loud and with abandon), my camp lifestyle (too extreme, even for this publication), and my in populist gimmicks from the start. Everything constant belief that film, (alone in the back row I love about theatre, rock ‘n’ roll, and literature at a science fiction double feature) can save meets in film. It’s the final frontier in art. your mortal soul. Everything else is grave robbery.

JAN WILLIS
VOLUNTEER EXTRAORDINAIRE
Interviewed by Erin Emerson, Volunteer Coordinator
Tell me about yourself. What would you like to know? Let’s see, I’m from Utah, mostly Lehi. My family lives mostly in the Utah County area, with a bunch of cats, some rabbits, and (there used to be) some ducks too. They were purchased specifically to keep the grasshoppers down, and then they just kind of became pets. I have an older sister, a younger brother and a younger sister. My younger sister is going to be coming up to the U in the fall, which I’m pretty excited about. I think she’ll have a great time. I went to BYU. It has its quirks, but I enjoyed it there. I studied Asian studies, so I learned some Korean, which was a lot of fun. I even got to take a film class about Korea which I really enjoyed. Their TV shows are crazy and weird. They start out really good, and then they kind of peter out, but their movies are AMAZING! I’ve never been disappointed with a Korean movie. I work at a refugee nonprofit, which is great. I live here in Salt Lake and it’s wonderful! It’s the greatest place in Utah. And I like movies.
What brought you to volunteering with SLFS? I was just looking to become a little bit more involved after I moved to Salt Lake. I still don’t know a lot of people here, and so I just wanted to do something, and I’m a fan of movies so I figured the Film Society would be a great place to start. What are your outside hobbies besides film? I really like gardening. I’m also a volunteer at Red Butte Gardens, which is fun. I get to go wander around the gardens for free and look at all the plants. I collect the blooming dates of plants and take pictures. I also like reading and writing, and my dream is to one day write a TV show. I have several ideas, sitcoms and dramas . . . a sitcom drama . . . a “dramedy” would be fun. The idea I’ve been playing around the most with is in the same vein as Parks & Rec, but a bit more serious. I really like watching comedies, but also the things that have a more human aspect. I’ve been watching the show Elementary, which is so great. I love how it deals with addiction and really has a great human element to it. What is your favorite film and why? My absolute favorite movie is Jurassic Park. I don’t know why, partly nostalgia, but also because it’s just such a wonderful movie. When it came out in 3D, I went and saw it three times! I took a friend who had never seen it before. It was just great to see the reactions of someone who had never experienced it before. This friend had never seen Jurassic Park, and she was curled up in her seat,
terrified. It was great to see someone go through that for the first time. What are your hopes for SLFS in the future? I think it would be great to have people know more. When I talk to some people, they don’t know really what the Film Society is about. Also the summer film series is awesome and it would be great to have more of that [throughout the year].
